For example, lets just say I have a gigabyte board with 4 sata 6 Gb/s ports using the southbridge, but 2 more 6 Gb/S ports running off a J Micron controller? What purpose would that serve your average consumer, gamer, or workstation?

@romerofan123 basically, if it's proper controller (such as LSI MegaRAID, some Adapter controller etc) you'll get better performance, but if it's shitty $2 controller that's built in there just so that manufacturer can list more SATA ports on the box getting some advantage over competitors - don't use it, maybe only for optical drives.

@sxyphatboy those are good but, the speed improvement is not that big unless you're using the same applications over an over, i.e. office, internet exploiter(or any other browser), torrent client and some other apps, which in total does not occupy more than ~10GB on your HDD, those will be fast after 2-3 runs, but anyting else will run as fast as on a normal HDD, in other words the SSD part will be like a temp cache for most used "data" on the HDD.

I'm not sure about RAID tho' anyhu', between SSD and HDD-SSD hybrid I would go with the hybrid simply because SSD's are not there yet, you'd think that you buy 30/60/120GB SSD, but in reality you buy at least twice the amount, why? because the cells die very fast, it's all marketing but the reality is that SSD is not the answer, something new will come up and replace them, but it will take a bit more R&D...

@sxyphatboy I love the marketing guys that came up with the "cloud" naming scheme (: I am willing to bet $1,000 that the future is anything BUT so called "cloud" storage -- I work in the industry --, I could be wrong of course, we'll see in about 18-24 months, currently the cloud is very useful to store stuff that has little if any privacy value to one, anything else is stored under heavy encryption and across multiple drives, don't got all drives? you don't have the data!

@sxyphatboy it is possible but highly unlikely, first the cost of SSD's is high and will continue to be so, the cost of datacenters is also high, on top of that, they need to not only spread your data across multiple datacenters, basically create multiple copies of your data in case the datacenter is down or something went wrong and the data is lost[!] then the cost of maintenance is increasing with each year... and I'm sure that 1TB will cost a lot more than $25/yr.

The problem is that I am going to use the original motherboard for now, and don't know where the spots should be for the power +, power -, hdd led, power led, etc. Is there an easy way to tell which is which, other than trial and error or disassembling the original case? I have a Dell Studio XPS 7100 if that helps.
