  • “Stevens-Costello" Embouchure like Maynard used and James Morrison and Gospel trumpeter Phil Driscoll use. Type "“Stevens-Costello Embouchure" in on your youtube search and see how it's done. You can also buy the CDs and technique online.

  • Oooof...hittin' 'em up there with Satchmo. Good lord. Nice.

  • HOLY SHIT!!!

  • I saw Lynn with MF in oh....1977? Dang all those high notes turned his hair white.

  • TOO CLOSE. My... ears...

    Anyways, awesome playing.

  • Maynard,Lynn, .......everyone else !

  • wow.....nice man

  • Fucking ouch.

  • ...whhhhhaaaaat?

  • You don't show any strain in your embouchure, how is that?

  • @MrPhatsound007 -Because He played with Maynard Ferguson 20 years before you were born.

  • @ChronicPrime That doesn't have a whole lot to do with his ability to play the way he does.

  • @MrPhatsound007 Its because of the amount of air and tongue shape he uses. It makes playing high much easier than forcing the notes out

  • i love your hair man! good work

  • Can anyone tell me if Nicholson is using a puckered embouchure i.e maggio way??? I've read Cluade Gordons book on deap breathing which i understand but above certain notes my lips stop buzzing all together. The reason i ask is that you can see his mouth muscles hardly move regardless of the pitch, it's gotta be maggio, right?

  • Well, his embouchure seems to be the standard to me. I have seen predominant top lip, even and lower lip. I was a lower lip player and although I could reach a G pretty easily, it was never all that strong. The key, no matter which you use, is opening your throat and using your diaphram to power the instrument. He does this very well. Technically, there should be no significant change in pressure or embouchure.

  • I saw her on the golden girls once

  • We went to school together, started trumpet in 3rd grade...where are you now?

  • OMG........he makes it look so easy

  • Never heard of you before I found this video!!!!! The fact that your embouchure never changes is AWESOME!!! I can't do that.....................Good show!!! Cheers!!!

  • Has he got a laser beam in his mouth, I feel sorry for any trombone player that has to sit in front of him - Awesome!

  • @TrumpetGeeza I actually wrote to Lynn about a time when he was still with the MF band. They came out into the audience to do "Hey Jude" and he was about six feet behind me. My ears were ringing for about 10 minutes! Believe this or not, he actually wrote me back! Nice guy! I'd love to know the sequence. I know in the original it was G F G F on the hight side. I don't think the MF version involved double G's.

  • NASTY!!!!!!!! the footage from macarthur park - scary good.

  • What a tease, you have been up to something!

  • I remember seeing this dude with at the Midnight Madness with Maynard in Miami concert in 1974. Bad dude! Seemed to play higher than Ferguson that night! I haven't heard a word about this guy or seen anything about him since, so I'm glad this was posted!

  • Joined MF at 22, that's mostly him on "La Fiesta" from the Chameleon LP, later with Thad Jones Mel Lewis, settled in Vegas where he suffered major lip injuries playing Bill Reddy's show at the Dunes hotel, I interviewed him at his home in Las Vegas around 1992, today he's sounding better than ever..

  • Inaccurate according to lynn. He sadi that was all MF on the La Fiesta stuff. Overdubbed. He said he could play it, but it was not him

  • Tongue forward, yes. "TCE" or "SuperChops", no.

  • Most impressive. How can one learn to do that(on a far lower level) but just to be better. Don´t all trumpeters and others wan´t that??

  • Start by getting Claude Gordon's book "Brass Playing Is No Harder Than Deep Breathing". It contains everything you need to know to develop into a great brass player. Then get his book "Systematic Approach to Daily Practice" and follow the lesson plan in the book EXACTLY as written, except stay on each of the 52 lessons for two weeks instead of just one week (the material gets too heavy too quickly at one week per lesson). Use google to find these books.

  • Hi.

Thank you for the responce. I live in Denmark, so a trip to Chicago is not in my plans right now.

I´ll look into the site, and try to get the Claude Cordon book. One of my frieds bought the Cat Anderson method, and does like that, but I need more basic training.

Have a nice day and thanks once again. It is really nice meeting fellowtrumpeters here. SOrry it can´t be in real life too!!

  • Lynn's not taking huge deep breath's...

  • I played next to him a few times in college and I can tell you he does take deep breath's.

  • sure, they're deep. But he's not taking huge breaths.

  • He doesn't need the extra air for what he's doing here. Therefore he doesn't take a huge breath.

  • Another excellent resource would be to go to the Trumpet Herald Internet Forum and go to the Claude Gordon forum within that Website.

If you are within driving distance of Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, or Greenville, South Carolina I can refer you to a great teacher that could help you.

  • U sure hes using a TCE tonguing the chops approach? This guy is great, hes probably just tonguing normally.

  • Listen to the S-M-A-C-K he gets on his articulations. That's the sound of a forward tongue, through the teeth hitting the chops. That's the sound I am looking for in a trumpeter!!

  • Sir, how the hell do you do it? I can't even get past a damn double G.

We do indeed need more of you sir. Peace.

  • best 15 seconds of my life

  • Haha, I like the way to put that, man.

  • Lynn, you animal! You knocked us out back in the 70's - we live to sound like you today! So effortless...

  • wow

  • I don't think this is Lynn's site unless he's lying about his age! : )

I took a few lessons with him with my friend Frank Blocksburg right when he got called to go out with Buddy Rich's band and then moved to Vegas. Still awesome!

  • a tremendous player, and person as well!

  • It sure is great to know your chops are together man! I look forward to hearing you play in the near future! Fantastic!

  • Lynn we need more of you man, where were you????????????

  • Woah, how did you get this unless you are lynn lol, wouldn't really think a guy that good and famous and thats played with maynard would have a yt acc, but anything can happen these days.

  • Amazing!!!!

  • BRASIL!

    sou muito seu fã!!

sem duvidas vc é o melhor trompetistas de todos os tempos!

fico feliz em saber q vc ta vivo e bem!!!

    tocando muito ainda!!

    parabens

  • I have followed this guy since MF days when he stood next to MF and traded back in the 70's and he just keeps getting better... He needs to come out of hiding.

  • This is cool. WOW!

  • Is this Draco Malfoy's dad?

    :) :) :)

Just kidding! Lynn sounds awesome here!

  • How does he do it with apparently no effort at all?

  • Holy Crap! His hair is still the same as it was like 40 years ago...awesome!

Talk about a huge sound! Love this guy.

  • You're an inspiration, Lynn. Hope to hear more of your playing. Thanks for posting this.

    jb1970

  • Now THAT's why I'm coming to see you Lynn. Can't wait. My mind is OPEN!

    Dave
