@wwwonderful no, not like them, that is a horrible comparison, hendrix and mccartney did have some good qualities in their career, but elizabeth cotten was an original and no hendrix or mccartney will ever match elizabeth cotten's inspiration
THIS is soul, and THAT"S why it's beautiful. Bob Dylan doesn't have a "traditional" voice either, but it's the conviction and the truth that make both great. If you're interested in great voices with no soul, you'd be better off watching American Idol.
@KINKSTA55 Elizabeth Cotton butchers Freight train? Go look up the song? Elizabeth Cotton wrote that song when she was 13 years old -- which would be 1908! How she sings it is HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE SUNG! Good greif!
@wwwonderful Finding a typo your best shot? What about the stupidly of claiming a legendary performer/composer "butchers" her own classic song? Could that be GROSS ignorance? Cheers!
@Mandolin1944 Yes, I chose to ignore the "butchers" comment which has no business here. What surprises me is that a 13-year-old girl should sing about death and going away without leaving a trace. I've always loved this song. It's only justice that artists who have shared the song also remind people who the real credit should go to.
@wwwonderful OK, probably your approach was more prudent than mine but I doubt I'll ever change. As to the song writer and the song? Well that's what happens with prodigies isn't it? How does one explain a 2 year old who never had piano lessons walking up to a keyboard and playing Bach -- but it happens. Freight train is probably the first show song most finger pickers learn and most would not have a clue what kind of fabric Elizabeth cotton is!
That is just Sooo cool!!

@BigJamesHallTV I me'ant that they play(ed) left-hand. So Hendrix wasn't inspirational, and neither were the Beatles? That's a new one.

Can't we all just get along? Music like this floats up to the angels. Perhaps that person is not familiar with folk music.

@KINKSTA55 Like Bob Dylan or Jerry Garcia, her voice is not what makes this beautiful music.
I wouldn't call this butchering.
Beautiful music, that inspired other musicians.
