  • it's a great tutorial, yet i have an issue here, when i paint the grass selecting the 0alpha, it turn the part of grass semi transparent, is there a way around that?

  • @underfox001 Yeah it's a known issue in the viewport regarding video card drivers and such (happens to some folks). Also depends on what type of video card you have. If you export to an engine like Unity you should see it properly.

  • @PolyNurb oh ok, so it is maya related only? it's good to know, also, sorry to take your time, but is there a way to layer more than 2 texture and paint them? it would permit me to add more details to my terrain rock + grass +dirt.

  • @underfox001 Most likely that is Maya viewport related. You can layer a lot of textures for sure...problem is most game engines support only 2 UV sets per model. You''l have to Google which engines support more than 2 UV sets.

  • Thanks for this tutorial. but rendering output is not same like that working output. one layer will be showed on. if any tips for the layered output?

  • Same thing, lovely tutorial, but no final usage unfortunately, NO rendering in either MR or mental ray ... And I see many guys with same problems. Can others who are happy show the light how did they render? THANKS!

  • Wait! Doesn't matter, I got it to work :') I used add colour instead of replace!

  • When I apply the white colour it changes my object white, but in yours it doesn't which I guess has to do something with why it is painting in alpha for me :/

  • how do i export it with the model, so i can import it with the model WITH the texture and what i assinged in some software(unity3d for example)

    Everything works great in Maya but neither Maya Software or Mental Ray render anything but the dirt layer.

    Did anyone solve this in the past? Please help!

  • make sure top texture layer is set to over and bottom one set to none...

    only works in default viewport mode.

  • @Teivel666 - this is purely a real time effect. That's why ut doesn't render correctly.

  • Great video, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to use this method with 3 or more textures. You have the dirt and grass, but if i wanted to add another grass layer to off set the tile..or even a rock texture or snow for mountains and such. I know you can do it by just using custom painted alpha maps as apposed to painting vert color. but the vert color method is great b/c of the real time update in the viewer. When I try to add a 3rd layer, it doesn't work anymore. any ideas??? thanks

  • @DarkstarOne8 - I do believe in Maya you can layer as many as you like as long as the UV sets all link up to the proper texture for that UV set. I think the limitation comes into play within most game engines, as far as my knowledge most engines support two UV sets imported. I am not sure if some engines allow more. If they do it might be Unreal engine or Cryengine or another high end game engine.

  • I just cant get it to paint. Nothing happens. I have applied the uv's set it up right. Ive been at it for hours... :/

  • can i fit a texture in a rotation and position?

  • @dranoel1963 - Not exactly sure what you mean? You can set keys on the 2D placement node of the textures and animate them moving across the geometry or rotating if you like. In fact this is the primary way to kind of do animated textures for game environments. I have actually creating flowing waterfalls this way, animated track turn arrows and stuff!

  • I am following this tutorial and its all good until we have to put the UV textures in on the separate sets. its just not working. The grass image came up on the dirt set and the grass set is not showing any images even though i am following what you are doing.

  • how can i get this to work with more than 2 layers. I would like like 5+ at least....multiple types of grass...rock for mountains..soil and stones for a riverbed ..something like that. I tried adding more layers but I can't seem to get the painting effect to work, how would you choose to paint with a different one of the layers.

  • Hmm maya doesnt seem to want to render the alpha I painted. I can see it perfectly in the viewport but it just wont render... Thoughts?

    But when I'm using 2009 I get some problems. When I try to paint alpha to the top layer the alpha of the bottom layer is effected aswell. So the whole geometry gets transparent, do you konw how I can keep the bottom layer solid?

  • @Crylar44 Sounds to me you need to check up the linking of the UV sets to the textures...that's almost always why this issue occurs. Just make sure the proper UV set is UV Linked to the proper texture...you will have two UV sets and two textures.

  • @corbin720 As far as I know when this comes into Unity there are some settings in the FBX import attributes for Multi-UV or at least UV channels. I would check there first.

  • @corbin720 use FBX for importing models into unity, it works best, pm me if you want some more details because i also use unity.

  • @PolyNurb in maya 2011 doesnt work cause i cant get a planar mapping of the dirt in the uv text editor , it shows only a grey plane ... any idea?

  • @Grimm3D Yes this will render in Maya's software renderer, it's the Mental Ray renderer that doesn't play well with layered textures.

  • I've completed this tutorial with success, and I was wondering if there was a way to bake or export this layered texture as one image file? I want one image i can apply to the model in a game and I can't figure out how to do it. If you know how please share :)

  • @Huggenation - I do believe maybe the batch back option for Mental Ray which lets you bake out projected textures, procedural textures, etc... might do the trick.

  • @Huggenation My only guess would be to look into batch bake option in Mental Ray. I do know it allows you to bake out procedural textures, projected textures into a good old single layer file texture.

  • Hi PolyNurb, thanks for the tutorial. I´m applying this technique in a project and it looks really good, but I have a problem. When I try to render the image with mental ray, the alpha texture isn´t showed. I just see one texture.

    Do you have any idea about that?

  • @xixufire That's because in Mental Ray it doesnt show the multiple UV sets, or the vertex alpha. It's actually a purely real time rendering thing....

  • djkorova, check and make sure you linked up everything during the UV linking part of it. Also make sure you have UV projections in both UV sets that are linked.

  • When I "apply color" it actually colors the plane white. Then the painting only paints transparency in the white plane. Any idea what am I doing wrong?
