  • Karen was an awesome drummer..great technique, flawless timing, and creativity..and she looked damn cute playing them as well.! ;) .she was a triple threat..great singer, song writer, and drummer !..seems that most talented artists like her were taken away from us too early..she was an irreplaceable asset in the music world, something it's in dire need of right now !

  • needs more cowbell

  • Great to see her happy and in her element! That's the beauty of those in the public eye. The footage that exists of them after they're gone...

  • She makes you feel the love of the drums! So in her element...and to also be gifted with the most amazing female voice of our lifetimes...it still saddens me to think of the turmoil she was in before her death...I always rooted for her!

  • I can't handle this on strong acid.

  • man, the '70s were a trip . . .

  • Why does it sound exactly the same even when she is walking around the room? Are the drums shes hitting part of the audio track at all?

  • Amazing.......Her and John Denvber......

  • Karen could play them skins wow I am a drummer and I must be honest she wa better then me. I listen to her stuff she is one hell of a drummer..

  • WOW. She sure had mad skills.

  • @ianb902 Her bother said she had some wicked oral skills too!!......

  • Anyone that says she was not a good player doesn't know what they are talking about. There was alot of skill involved in that sequence. There is a vid of Buddy Rich doing much the same thing, going from one percussion instrument to another before finally ending on the drum kit.

  • she was so happy on drums

  • Once, I said that Karen Carpenter was a good drummer, and that singing while playing was impressive. Got me some weird looks from the guys I was talking to. But she actually knew a lot about drumming and percussion, instead of just playing a rock kit.

  • uhh....was that John Denver in the band ?

  • Karen was badass. Loved her groove and yes that SMILE while she played says it all.

  • Thanks so much,, she will always be tops for me,, hope to see her in heaven,,,thanks also...

  • Has anyone else picked up that the bass drummer was none other than John Denver?

  • @paulmcdonald1968 Yes...and i think that part was cute . :)

  • Drumming was Karen's first passion. In the video clip she was just having some fun with the script but she could really get out some good vibes- a lot better than the female drummer with the Brit band Honeycombs who was more of a novelty act.

  • Thank you for sharing this!

  • This is what i'd call unassuming top talent.

  • Sigh. . . ONLY if Karen had gone to the Chinese Buffet date with me. . . RIP Karen!!!

  • @lafkdjay you're an arse

  • She can even duplicate herself.

  • She was such a lovely person. What a talent we lost too soon.

  • Brilliant,what a talent

  • as if her voice wasn't too much already ;-)

  • maddd respect!

  • Love this! Bravo!

  • Passionate playing.

  • i love this so much!

  • She shined when she was playing drums!!!

  • I'd have loved to see her go head to head with Gene Krupa... just imagine.......

  • Did ya'll notice who she's talking to in the band? That's John Denver!

  • @oldjunkvet hell yeah

  • What an amazing woman! I think she surpasses the drumming greats though! I don't see Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, or Neil Peart being able to be in two places at once and playing two drum sets!

  • @graduator08 Buddy Rich even stated Karen Carpenter was his favorite drummer!

  • no other female musician could ever come close to that... not to mention her voice :)

  • She is gorgeous, talented and hawt!!

  • and thats how thrash metal druming was born :D

  • Karen Anne Carpenter (March 2, 1950 – February 4, 1983) was an American singer and drummer. She was a drummer of exceptional skill, but she is best remembered for her vocal performances. (From Wikipedia)

  • love the way she smiles as she plays

  • @frostytheaussie That's where she was the happiest...behind the drums. Gorgeous woman taken from us way too soon.

  • I don't mean to denigrate her playing ability, but this clip sure sounds as if the music you're hearing is pre-recorded. Whether she played the music in the first place for the recording...oh wait, I see about four minutes in suddenly there are two of her on screen at once. So yeah, too bad they don't have the *live* sound on this.

  • @x2501x "Karen Carpenter: Kickass Drummer" has the live version of this song and others.

  • @x2501x watch this for live drums

    /watch?v=H47v7yYRfjA&feature=related

  • she is so HOT!

  • Wow - Karen Carpenter *and* John Denver? Very cool.

And much missed. Both of them.

  • great retort, "why not" even if it was rehearsed.she sure seemed to be smart, cute, sassy, and talented but kinda sensitive for a superstar. most superstars don't really worry about what their critics say as long as their fans are happy, but she let criticism lead to her demise and a unique voice was lost.

  • wonderful......Karen.....*****.....bye

  • how I wanted to do drums in Fourth grade, about 1968. My mom said NO. probably cuz 7 kids made enough noise!!!

  • Karen Carpenter was never happier than when she was playing the drums. Once the decision was made (most likely not by her) to bring her out from behind the kit and upfront, I believe she became all self-conscious...and that contributed a great deal to her problem. Just my opinion, but if they woulda let her keep singing from behind the drumset...she'd still be singing for us today!

  • @eggo63

If she was really that happy drumming ALL the time, she should have bagged the variety show and joined B.B. King's band. She'd STILL be playing 300 nights a year.

  • This is what I look for in a wife.

  • A DCI Drummer!

  • Yeah she was great...but in 1975-1976 she beat out John Bonham as best drummer in the Playboy Pop and Jazz poll........something seriously wrong with that mis-calculation.

  • Okay, I freaked out with the double. It reminded me of the Twilight Zone episode.

  • What a loss! It's a real pity her death.

  • This is before my time so I don't know who this chick is, but I do know that she can jam! Hell Yeah!

  • ALL THE GREAT LUDWIGS............VISTALITES....CONGAS.TEMPLE BLOCKS ECT.FROM THE WORLDS GREATES DRUM CO.

  • the blood is on our hands for permitting molesting band directors and orchestra directors to get away with flagrant blatant discrimination, 1 pp = vgns today ... that is so wrong worse than then ... more suicides on the way if you don't penect these morons who've been raping and need to go back to East Dumb Flock or ELSE ... I play OBOE ... one vgn looking fi pp Robin Good will distribute to the children who had theirs removed in war. War is FEMALE GENOCIDE

  • is that john denver on the bass drum at 1:29

  • Wonderful Karen *****.....bye

  • if i lived in america i would be in a marching band ALL DAY EVERY DAY....

  • I love this video! You can see she had passion for what she did and also a sense of humour. The beginning alone had me laughing. The world really lost someone special too soon.

  • I remember watching this live, she was great!! I miss her all the time.

  • Karen is in my heart....mi artista favorita....from Chile .... No habra nunca mas alguien como ella . Solo anhelo ir al Cielo para verla eternamente .

  • Wow. She is a barely competent drummer. Big deal.

  • @pbrick6301 Barely competent, huh? Let's see you do that.

  • @jetfreak4 Ignore him. Just another lonely attention-hungry troll. Take the "b" out of his username and you'll get what kind of person he is. You should also check out his page and view the "lovely" comments he gets.

  • @pbrick6301 She looks beyond competent to em dude!

  • john denver is with her he is playing the drums and being funny.

  • Great

  • I've read they Hal Blaine did their recordings. If that's the case, I wonder why?

  • @chirodrum The "official" reason was that Richard (and others) felt that Karen, being a woman of slight build, wasn't "laying into the drums hard enough." B.S. Clearly she was excellent. The more likely reason was the sexism of the day- "girls don't play drums." Even Hal Blaine thought a woman playing drums looked "ridiculous" (also B.S.) Also, a few reviewers (not all) said the group lacked a focal point, and that the focal point should be the lead singer (Karen).

  • @arfies Thanks for the explanation.

  • @arfies I've always thought those comments about Karen not having enough studio experience and not laying into the drums were total BS. Glad I'm not the only one that thinks so. If they wanted a "focal point" why didn't they just put her kit on a platform or in the front! Sheesh. That's always bugged the hell out of me.

  • @chirodrum People pressured her to give up the drums and be front and center, which she did NOT want to do. Coincidentally (?), this is when her anorexia started...

  • Tito Puente, look over your shoulder-- you've got competition!

  • KC: Kansas City; King Crips and Karen "the shizzle" Carpenter. KC for life, yo.

  • Not hitting hard enough and makes it look geeky. I said it. Bring on your criticism.

  • Audio sync looks really off to me.

  • I've been playing for about 15 years and she's so much better than I am at most of that stuff it kinda pisses me off a little. Freekin amazing.

  • woah mindfck, this is a sudden and healthy reminder that girls at one point needed absolutely no intentional sex appeal to be a fun to watch and love celebrity O_O

  • @alphaguy Your comment looks like sarcasm. Karen Carpenter died of complications related to anorexia. And the intro skit is filled with dated, but completely intentional sex appeal.

  • @blaqphli i dont know where you can find sarcasm in my words, but i mean what i said. I dont see any sex appeal in this intro skit..... I was commenting on the fact that modern day entertainment for some reason requires at least one woman to have extreme cleavage to be successful, as opposed to something like this. Fun, witty, happy, awesome.

  • Talent plus

  • I'm a very big KC fan! Love her music dearly! She was a kick drummer too!

  • Skip the highschool band part 1:30

  • I learned of her through my mom...through music i fell in love with her talent n i cant wait to see her in heaven! Look how joyful she looked!!! Karen Carpenter n Carole King are my 2 favorite female artist of the 70s!!! Im 29 n its amazing im still learnin more about them!!! When they did the movie on the carpenters i cried at the end...it showed her sayin im tired n goin upstairs...at that was it...

  • are you kidding?? this chick's better than travis man!! lol

  • Kren Carpenter and Sheila E. The greatest female Purcussionists- Drummers EVER!!!

  • What a horrible loss- I cried when she passed.

  • Dang. All that voice AND she could shred a trap set? What a damn tragedy that she died so young.

  • @GHETTOPOPS79 Yup! He's a guest in the Carpenters' First Television Special (1976) where this was from. Check out his duet with Karen- it's one of the most sublime blends of voices I've ever heard.

  • What a lovely personality this woman had. Great musician.

  • holy shit. I NEVER knew she was a drummer. Im blown away!!!!!! shes definately excellent

  • She looks like she's having so much fun on the drums! Isn't that why we all play? It's easy to lose sight of that.

  • send in this marching band to clean out the taliban. They would run for their lives.

  • I was a 17-year-old high school newspaper reporter, and photographed the Agoura High School Marching Band in the background of Karen Carpenter and John Denver when the Marching Band segment was shot in Hollywood ... and still have the negatives to prove it. Two talented superstars who were so kind to our high school band. I will treasure my photos of these two on set forever.

  • These guys are rubbish compared to travis barker. They have to use speed to sound good, but travis can sound good at any tempo, just playing in the pocket. He has a much better sense of groove than these guys, you can tell by watching his delicate techniques and innovative rhythm use in fills. He has much better skin-control too, he can get any sound he wants out of a drum, rather than just thrashing away with triplets and such... TRAVIS BEST DRUMMER EVER!!!

  • @thereforeimustbegod yeah, because they're not drummers they're singers. She just plays drums, I bet travis barker sucks at singing. LOL learn more about the people you are talking about before posting comments. you sound fucking stupid

  • @thereforeimustbegod wow. as a drummer, your scope of drummers is so small its fucking ridiculous. Ian Paice from deep purple warms up to the apex of a barker solo. John Blackwell David Girbaldi And Dave weckl sit in a pocket..... travis barker plays on time, thats about it.

  • Very impressive. Karen was very well schooled on the instrument.

  • She can stand up in play. So all you people who started to play drums because you were too lazy to stand up and play an instrument shut up and just improve

  • It's sad they had to turn the Carpenter's into America's sweethearts, nauseating. But these tv specials usually were just horrible.

  • She isn't really playing. There aren't no mics and you can't see her hitting the skins. That's why she looks so relaxed.

  • @thecfolk Maybe she's not really playing here but, she really did play the drums. Check her Bio.

    Occupations Musician/Singer

    Instruments Vocals, drums, percussion

    Years active 1965–1983

  • @thecfolk hey man you know Karen could clone her self and actually this is live.

  • @thecfolk '70s variety shows like these often were synched. To see her do this same routine live in concert (gee, really, this isn't live? There WEREN'T two Karens?!) check out "The Karen Carpenter Drum Workshop."

  • this is farout

  • cheesefest!!!!

  • Wow, she looks so happy and relaxed here, unlike when she's singing...

  • @Felicity1247 They had to "force" her from behind the drum set to sing originaly. She was completely happy just spanking the skins.

  • i can do all she can do and more and im 15

  • @jarhead572 But can you do it while singing like her?

  • @arfies ill tell the truth no, but singing and drumming should never be done, im talking of the drumming and its a track if you listen closely, i jusst dont find her a good drummer and if she spent more time standing and singing (entertaining) maybe it owould be better

  • @jarhead572 Variety shows back in the day were often done to track. For a live version of this solo (and a better example of her drumming), check out "Karen Carpenter: Kickass Drummer."

  • @arfies i mean she isnt bad, but i dont think she is the star on drums that everybody thinks she is

  • @jarhead572 No offense, but this may be a case of teenage-boy-who-doesn't-want-to-be-shown-up-by-a-girl-itis. Here's a friendly challenge: videotape yourself doing "Mr. Guder" (at "Carpenters - Tonight Show 1973 part 3"- $h!t gets real around 2:30) and prove thyself. ;-)

  • @arfies none taken i probably would, if i had a drum kit, would need to at school and im done with it and i dont see whats so hard about mr gruder, ii would probably try Tocatta by Elp, much better drum piece

  • @jarhead572 no you cant

  • Did anyone else notice the other tragic loss John Denver in this video?

  • This is beyond cool! God Bless Karen Carpenter!

  • In ways of actual performance and technique, she is an awesome percussionist! It just sounds like they over-dubbed the sound! :(

  • @Lastmanonearth Specials back then were often done to a prerecorded track. To hear her do the same routine live, look up "Karen Carpenter Drum Workshop."

  • Karen, was an awesome drummer!!!

  • she is good and she have boobs :)

  • She is gorgeous

  • she's so great! i'm a girl, and i'd love to learn to play drums.. always air drumming to songs, lol

  • @yosserbatool You keep drumming girl :oD

  • @yosserbatool There's nothing cooler than a female drummer! It was always my dream too.

  • @yosserbatool go for it!

  • I honestly think drums were the voice music used to communicate with her. She always seemed to smile the brightest when she was drumming away.

  • fake....

  • @beavis6645 Can you please explain what you mean by fake ? I'm interested to know..

  • Even here she's skinny, but we were all skinny in the 70's. I wore a size 5/6 usually, all 96 pounds of me. I wish she had known more happiness in her life. Parents, the worse thing you could wish for your kids is early success in show business.

  • @2degucitas

I think it's with all the stress and junkfood, simply wasn't around in the 70's,

unless you had problems with a theriod gland or something..

  • @TheLostinadream Yup. No chips or coke machine at school. We all walked to and from school, lots of walking between classes. No internet or huge SUV's to drive us everywhere. Food portions were much smaller. Even fat people weren't as fat back then! Hardly anyone was obese.

  • @2degucitas

Si, Another world we live in now..

Even the drums has changed !

  • @TheLostinadream Time to change some things back the way they were.

  • look how much fun she had with the drums, I really really love her. Best singer ever to me and also a very cool drummer <3

  • She's awesome! Anyone notice her double eerily melt away at the end?

  • haha that was john denver

  • A beautiful and talented woman who went way before her time. Rest in peace Karen we love you

  • how i wish i can sing like her, what a great voice karen...

  • am 25 and I love Karen Carpenter since I can remember , when I was little and my parents told me she was dead , I was so sad and I know she died before I was born but still I was crazy about her

  • kkkkkkk "chapolin" feelings in video "effect"... very good!!!

  • Wow. I never knew she even played drums! Quite good!

  • @jjjay999 Wow i never knew you were an idiot..quiet good. get your head outa your ass..

  • @whokeithmoon It must suck to be you.

  • karen fuiste una gran persona

  • this is gay before gay was invented

  • @Syzygy60 Yeah, but it's a good 'gay'.

  • my sophmore year I was snare my junior year I was lead drummer

  • @Syzygy60 and your point?

  • i played bass drum in my 1st year of marching band I kept good time

  • i saw this

  • i just love the end how she comes back into her own body, awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a crush that I had on that girl!!!!! Still do!!!!!

  • If CAKE bringed u here, thumbs up

  • Wow, John Denver doing a comic bit with Karen Carpenter...and both of them gone way too soon.

  • It's quite ironic really that she ended up like a drum...............just skin and an empty shell.

  • John Denver is the bass drummer in the marching band.

  • Wwwwowwww, and she was having a GREAT time too! What a perfect moment! Just what I needed this moment. :-)

  • Rock on Karen!! Gone too soon.

  • i had no idea she was really this good on the drums... she owned some real talent

  • I still cannot even begin to understand how she fell to anorexia. Sad. Lost talent.
