@vancouvercanucks23 playing real jazz is only doable if you can play with the "feel" which I'm not saying you don't have, but it's something you really have to pay attention to and not pay attention to at the same time. not a very good description i know, but to make it sound right it's all about the touch. work on the shuffle pattern on the ride (spang spang a lang), kick (on the quarter note... very softly), and the hihat comped on the 2 and 4
@frenchadrian That has to be the weirdest comment I've seen recently...and you see a lot of weird stuff on Youtube. Was Miles from N.O? What about Tony Williams? Ornette? What about all the greats born NY/elsewhere? What a stupid comment, I mean really...WTF? Anyway, this really isn't jazz per se. It's his own 'rock' version and that's all cool, but you could not EVER work using that style and sound properly. Same goes the other way around though. A strict jazz snob would suck ass at rock.
Well ill be the first to admit i didn't like jazz. Major metal head and didn't like it at all till I started to play bass and drums. You really learn to appreciate it after that and learn how difficult it really is to learn and understand. By the way i LOVE your snare
i play in athrash metal band and have been playing for 6or 7 years and i'm only 16 but i'm trying to learn jazz to improve my chops btw your realy good
When you actually start developing a feel you kill it. For someone with such nuanced technique you really don't know how to put some soul into what you play.
i think it is amazing for you... brilliant cymbals gives hate to this sound ... deepness.. dark sounds.. and lots of things.. if you want to play jazz (not fusion) a customs are not giving really deep sound..beacuse they are brilliant...
i am big zildjian fun.. but you must choose your cymbals for your style.. if you want to play some traditional,modal... u must use dark and hand hammered.. feel the sound inside first..
i agree wid rdxl9a. i liked it twas nice n relaxed i liked the open hand techneq when bouncin from snare to hats lokd very satisfyin n it was nice n lose n relaxed which is wat jazz is about to me neway

Drumming like life is a work in progress, I am not sure why people have to be so negative about this, so congradulations if you play better yourself, shouldn't diminish what this guy is doing. Nothing wrong with constructive criticism, but why the negativity.
@rdxl9a I realize your comment is 1 year old - but you expressed what I was feeling...we both feel that there is a tactful way to suggest changes/improvement (e.g., "constructive criticism")...interestingly, perhaps most (maybe ALL) drummers need to recall their own beginnings when they couldn't even keep a steady rhythm/beat...I used to tape myself (back in the mid 70's - I started in late 1973) - and all I have to do is listen to one of my old tapes to remind myself how far I've come!
i don't know if you had a song in your head while you played this, but this isn't really solo jazz set material. its good, but it would be better under a melody or something.
he is enjoying himself, thats all that matters. its not about which genre is better or whos better and why...its about enjoying yourself playing drums.
What a talent! You are a MUSICIAN, Tight. Composed. I still think you're holding out on us. You've developed a fan base in case you haven't noticed. Hope you're in a band. You're professional plus. I
the reason why i dont like jazz drumming is cause its boring to me. i love metal drummers such as well ill name the bands, children of bodom, nile, arch enemy, arsis, anterior and so forth
is it because they play uber fast? i mean i like those bands but at least appreciate how much skill this takes. (nile drummer is incredible(saw him live(did a drum solo for his sound check(i couldn't breath after))))
I will admit this does take skill, no doubt about it. i like metal drumming because most of those drummers, have been playing drums every day for 5 hours for 10 years to where they are just now "able" to play metal music, most guitarist in metal also have played for years, most of them also come from music colleges, arsis, they all came from berklee, darren cesca left the band to become a surgeon, no other genre can say that about themselves
my guitar teacher has been playing jazz guitar for 20 years now. he can also play metal but he doesnt enjoy it as much because most of metal guitaring is pretty rekless and can get boring. basically people train very hard to do all soughts of music. metal is just one of thoughs.
you say this as if you don't have to do that for other genres?
it is in my (humble) opinion as a drummer that jazz is the most difficult genre to drum to. however, i tend not to rate difficulty to the genres because, basically, any drummer of any skill level will play all genres with varying degrees of success, and there is no skill 'cap.' you could practice ANY genre for 10 hours a day and get freakishly good at it.
I can attest to that ..I'm a computer engineer with a bioengineering minor from Uof Toronto and into technical death metal drumming . Been drumming since gr 8 ( so yeah , around 11 years on my belt). Yanic Bercier (Quo Vadis) is an engineer and has a pHd degree in medical physics..that guys been an inspiration.I'll be giving drumming a bit higher priority when I'm done with my education.
You're right, only metalheads are geniuses. Only dudes who play power chords really fast can be surgeons and rocket scientists and hold law degrees. Finally someone speaks the truth. I'm so sick of those idiotic jazz, latin, fusion, flamenco, bluegrass, etc. type mongoloids acting like their music is hard. Long live power chording and blast beating..REAL INTELLIGENT music!!!
i'm just tired of it. It's like you said, metal guitarists/drummers play 5 hours a day for 10 years and go to college, whereas these fucktard jazz guys could never get into any school considering they probably only practice 1 hour a week for like 3 years before playing over easy songs like John Coltrane's "Giant Steps". lolol..fuckin n00bs. \m/ long live GOOD bands like dragonforce, immortal, kingdom come, job for a cowboy, etc. who actually go to prestigious schools and PRACTICE.
LOL that's totally true, polishcomedy NEEDS to hear them live at a concert...it's like guitar hero when u miss all the notes ,and jazz it's actually pretty difficult
stupid inbred fucktar then u need ton look for the word TONE , it's hard to define it while writting you stupid, plus, alexaxxem was supportingyou dumbass, so how can i get the sarcasm¿

O_0 "fucking my sister"? i didn't understand what you said...i meant "tard2 "to look", you stupid ****" and the las one is obvious, you just don't know how to comeback
False. Dragonforce all studied at Julliard and are masters of jazz fusion and bluegrass. My favorite Latin percussionist is Lars Ulrich, but you wouldn't know nuthin 'bout dat.
False. They actually play faster than what's on record. They slow down their solos in the studio using Pro Tools. As far as live you were probably drunk and so your perception was that they were sloppy.
The guitarists even admitted they just started playing a couple years ago. They will play one part then go back and overdub then speed it up. Have you seen them live? They have to have backup tracks playing so it sounds like their albums. They are fake. Trust me I thought they were badass too until I found that shit out.
But if not, they run about as many filters on their sound as a typical Hip-Hop artist...And always sound basically the same, with a little variation. Lol
That's not true at all. You don't have to hit light on the ride unless your going for a light sound, just like in any other kind of music. The hard part about jazz is that its all improvisational.
Abssolutely false. Jazz is all about cymbals. Rock is all about snare and bass drum... but if you play too much of it in jazz, you sound like a rocker that tries to play jazz, ready from book, instead of listening to the greats...
I think it primarily depends on the drummer really. Some drummers just suck and can't do anything, others can take the most simple of music and make it a masterpiece.
But yeah, jazz is tricky, and that's why a lot of metal drummers actually do incorporate jazz principles into their drumming.
You cant generalize metal though I think the drummers in lighter stuff lacks skill (Metallica, Maiden,Zepplin and the other ancient stuff that people praise so much) However, Technical Death Metal and a lot of Brutal Death metal have drummers that are competent in Jazz as well as Death metal.Try Quo Vadis,Necrophagist,Cryptopsy,Nile ,Origin, and a lot of other ones that have really amazing drummers.
Well I didn't say he lacked skill.I said that his skill is nowhere close to the drummers of the bands I mentioned above. He's good at what he does, but not someone I would look up to. Give him some song from Ithyphallic to cover and watch him shit bricks and the same goes with the drummers of the lighter sub-genre's of metal.Metallica wont last even 5 seconds with the extreme sub-genre's.
He did create some amazing grooves, and enhanced drumming. Musicians today like Weckl, Royster Jr., Jojo Mayer, Horcaio Hernedez, I can go on forever. He was very solid, and creative.
But the not the best, people are brainwashed that Bonzo is the best.
you have to be kidding me evil666man666, John Bonham (the drummer from Zeppelin) grew up playing jazz. He wouldnt shit bricks, he would make you shit in your pants after you saw him play. -_-
Jazz and technical death metal are two totally different things.Similar in difficulty but totally different in execution. He wont last more than 5 seconds with some Nile song for instance.
yeah, Metal does require a lot more skill than classic bands...
and a skilled metal drummer really makes the band, but you're talking about a genre where the drums are used as tools for eardrum obliteration instead of adding color to the ensemble...
just because they don't have a solo every song doesn't mean that their skills are sub-par. I'm sure if John Bonham learned and played a more metal style, he would obliterate
I was replying to evilman's comment on how classic metal drummers (most of who influenced many modern metal drummers, mind you) aren't as skilled as today's brutal drummers...something like that
Agree on this, for instance Lars Ulrich may have influences modern metal drummers, but his skills cant be compared to theirs imo (newer ones being better) though i think that Jazz drummers are the most skillful

But if not, they run about as many filters on their sound as a typical Hip-Hop artist...And always sound basically the same, with a little variation. Lol

Dragonforce are actually masters of hip-hop, too. They were nominated in the Source Awards 3 times.

the hard part about jazz is that u have to hit as light as u can on the ride
rockaz14 3 years ago
That's not true at all. You don't have to hit light on the ride unless your going for a light sound, just like in any other kind of music. The hard part about jazz is that its all improvisational.

Abssolutely false. Jazz is all about cymbals. Rock is all about snare and bass drum... but if you play too much of it in jazz, you sound like a rocker that tries to play jazz, ready from book, instead of listening to the greats...

I think it primarily depends on the drummer really. Some drummers just suck and can't do anything, others can take the most simple of music and make it a masterpiece.
But yeah, jazz is tricky, and that's why a lot of metal drummers actually do incorporate jazz principles into their drumming.
thomasstunts 3 years ago
You cant generalize metal though I think the drummers in lighter stuff lacks skill (Metallica, Maiden,Zepplin and the other ancient stuff that people praise so much) However, Technical Death Metal and a lot of Brutal Death metal have drummers that are competent in Jazz as well as Death metal.Try Quo Vadis,Necrophagist,Cryptopsy,Nile ,Origin, and a lot of other ones that have really amazing drummers.

I can't believe you just implied that "the drummer" from Zeppelin "lacked skill".
istramike 3 years ago
Well I didn't say he lacked skill.I said that his skill is nowhere close to the drummers of the bands I mentioned above. He's good at what he does, but not someone I would look up to. Give him some song from Ithyphallic to cover and watch him shit bricks and the same goes with the drummers of the lighter sub-genre's of metal.Metallica wont last even 5 seconds with the extreme sub-genre's.

Bonzo was very solid, but he wasn't the best.
He did create some amazing grooves, and enhanced drumming. Musicians today like Weckl, Royster Jr., Jojo Mayer, Horcaio Hernedez, I can go on forever. He was very solid, and creative.
But the not the best, people are brainwashed that Bonzo is the best.
Chunker 3 years ago
you have to be kidding me evil666man666, John Bonham (the drummer from Zeppelin) grew up playing jazz. He wouldnt shit bricks, he would make you shit in your pants after you saw him play. -_-
BogotaBT 3 years ago
Jazz and technical death metal are two totally different things.Similar in difficulty but totally different in execution. He wont last more than 5 seconds with some Nile song for instance.
evil666man666 3 years ago
yeah, Metal does require a lot more skill than classic bands...
and a skilled metal drummer really makes the band, but you're talking about a genre where the drums are used as tools for eardrum obliteration instead of adding color to the ensemble...
just because they don't have a solo every song doesn't mean that their skills are sub-par. I'm sure if John Bonham learned and played a more metal style, he would obliterate
Egg1Roll 3 years ago
I was replying to evilman's comment on how classic metal drummers (most of who influenced many modern metal drummers, mind you) aren't as skilled as today's brutal drummers...something like that
Egg1Roll 3 years ago
Agree on this, for instance Lars Ulrich may have influences modern metal drummers, but his skills cant be compared to theirs imo (newer ones being better) though i think that Jazz drummers are the most skillful
