I am a musicologist who has studied Lennon/McCartney, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell. And I think I can say without fear of exaggeration that Emily and Amy are a million times better than all of the others put together.
you, my friend, are on crack. I would agree they are comparable, in the conversation, but all the PhD's in music would convince me they are exponentially better than Lennon/McCartney, Dylan, Mitchelll, Simon & Garfunkel.
My dear friend, thank you for your quite rational response to my intentionally absurd comment. I like Indigo Girls a lot, but I thought I was being safely outrageous in my hyperbole so as to indicate satirical intent. Also, despite my pseudo-intellectual commenting style, I don't really have a Ph.D in musicology or anything else. I just wanted to mix it up by throwing some bait out there. Thanks for nibblin, catfish.
@generic33 Hyperbole doesn't indicate satire. (It is one of the elements of satire but satire is much more. I actually studied satire at the university as part of a literature class and I didn't identify your comment as satire. Sorry.).
I'm not sure what your comment is meant to accomplish... if you like Indigo Girls, why not simply say so?
My most honoured respondent, your saying hyperbole does not indicate satire while at the same time saying hyperbole is an element of satire is almost a direct contradiction. I get a feeling that you studied satire in the same sense that I have a Ph.D in musicology. Thank you for you inquiry, though, and I realize that my intent is ambiguous to a majority of readers. Besides, where is the fun in just stating the obvious as most do? Indigo Girls rule!!! See? Not fun.
@generic33 Obviously, I should have been more precise. What I meant to say was that hyperbole ALONE doesn't indicate satire (because it can also mean great admiration, it's a common marketing tool...).
I can asure you that I don't use academic titles that I didn't actually earn - I would feel foolish.
I see - I didn't get that the goal of a youtube comment could be fun (but then, I'm a rather dull person when it comes to the joys of internet comunication). So thank you for making this clear.
My dear s.o.81, your latest missive reveals that you are anything but a dull person. I won't presume to take credit for any influence I may have had on your recent evolution as an internet communicator, since your satirical wit was bound to reveal itself in any case. Your command of language and exemplary writing style indicates a high level of education and diligent scholarship on your part. You are a young J. W. von Goethe in comparison with most people who post on internet sites. Sehr gut.
Alright, thanks for the fun discussion (and I'm pretty sure the earlier misunderstanding was mostly due to the fact that English is not my native language which resulted in an unprecise wording in my case).
They are my happy musioc. Love these girls.
