Depressed? yeah, I'm sure he was. That would be a logical explanation for the choice he made. A documentary said that he was depressed about not getting work for 2 years and his movie (the one he thought would've been his big comeback) was cut short. He didn't leave a suicide note either which means nobody will ever truly know what he was thinking at that very moment.
