If there is any aircraft that LOOKS the part of a gunship, its the Beaufighter. It's stout and no nonsense appearance has *I am gunship and I mean it* written all over it.
Were those Spitfires with tropical filters in the very first shot? They sure look different like that. I thought they were Barracuda's or Fireflies for a moment until I looked closer! I always wondered, how much damage CAN a .50cal or 20mm do to a merchant ship? A destroyer? Are they powerful enough to hole an unarmored hull? I saw a "Dogfights" episode where a pair of F6F-5N Hellcats make a 90deg dive and fire straight down the funnel of a ship...they claim it "exploded". Is that even possible?
Looks like a Bristol Beaufighter showing it's awesome firepower against the ships. It must be bloody frightening to have been on the receiving end of that attack!

I daresay it was a Mossie coming in low over the Norwegian mountains to attack Fritizes in supposed safety of the fjord.
