  • Tagalog and Cebuano are very distinct to each other. Some words for both languages have the same meaning, such as panahon = time...

But sometimes they have a same word but different meaning...like 'usa' in tagalog means 'deer'...while 'usa' in cebuano means 'one'...

its quite challenging if u go to a region in which very few speaks tagalog or cebuano, like in northern Phils. they speak diff. language also

  • @xxxx2228 Yeah ... I love seeing the gradient in vocab / grammar across the different languages in the Philippines and down into Indonesia ... and actually up into Taiwan too. The Amis language is amazing - and has a lot of vocab that would be recognizable to Filipinos that speak various languages / dialects - and also to the the Indonesians that speak Javanese, Balinese, Sunda and other languages. The word 'usa' that you mentioned is actually 'rusa' in Indonesian.

  • As a Spanish-speaker, I can tell you that your Spanish is great! I'm impressed by the fact that you used the word "chico" :D

  • @femmefatale1990 jajaja... gracias :) .. but definitely needs a work out

  • It's such a shame that on Youtube and on American/Western TV they dont feature talk shows like this but other rubbish unrelated to scholar/educational feats like yourself. Have you practised more in Tagalog yet?

  • @DalyCityLife Got to use a lot of tagalog when we were shooting in the Philippines a while back. A lot of Cebuano too. Very fun languages.

  • Impressive!! Take a look at "Vade in Pace". A 2 min short where an actor "pretends" to speak 13 languages....

  • His Cantonese is a little off.

  • You don't speak my language... Portuguese! When the man showed the tablet of languages I was like " next is portuguese, next is portuguese" and it didn't appear! :(

  • @xrulezx8zx I'm sorry I'm missing Portuguese! ;( ... I've actually studied it for a while, but I wouldn't rank myself in it yet like the other languages in this clip.

  • @stujaystujay It's okay! I was impressed with your skills! My biggest wish is learn at least 8 language very well... I've never thought about 15! It takes a long time, isn't? By now I only speak my own language, portuguese, english, spanish and german! I I want to learn french, russian, japanese, arabic and Malayan! You encouraged me a lot! Congratulations :) Do you have some book where I can read more about the way you've learned all these languages?

  • @xrulezx8zx Being part of the Polyglot Project is an honour. I've read through the final draft and the stories and knowledge from some of the most renowned / successful language learners on the planet gives enough to chew on for the next few lifetimes!

  • His Hindi style/accent is very good and close, but the translation was not accurate. But it was not easy to translate that into Hindi very quickly. An accurate translation would be, "Ab ek aur / nayi ladki/premika/girlfriend ko dhoondney ka samay aa gaya hai". A literal one-to-one translation would be, "Abhi samay aa gaya hai ki mai baahar jaaun ek naye vyakti ya nayi ladki/premika/girlfriend ko dhoondney ke liye". What he said translates to "[They] said to his son, will get a new girlfriend?"

  • he doesn't speak Portuguese, either

  • he doesn't speak Portuguese

    : (

  • He doesn't speak greek, either

  • @stratosl Its not on the official list... but I've dabbled in it.

this is thai languages ha ha ha

  • Interpreting in itself is already hard enough, but from one non-native language to another? Outrageous, seriously jealous of the skillset here.

  • he is good..he's got talent.... luar biasa...

  • goshhh he's awesome! i'm jealous hahaha

  • He has another video with him speaking it :P look it up

  • pretty good already...but still needs improvements on Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese...

i am native chinese and speak mandarin, cantonese, tewcheow, Hokkien, English, French, Spanish, Italiano and suomi

  • Easy enough if you make an effort to learn 2-3 languages if they have the same roots. Why do people who speak English who dabbled a bit in French or Spanish say that language is one of the hardest to learn? Hardest in respect to what?

They are considered the easiest by a long shot. Learning any language or becoming proficient in any skill isn't something that unfolds by itself.

  • Neither Mandarin nor Cantonese translation is 100% correct. I guess being fluent in those languages doesn't mean that you can translate well spontaneously. :)

  • @catboyuk difficult man.. even try to switch language fast enough is difficult.. even for me..

I speak javanese, malaysian,Indonesian, spanish, german, english and learning swedish now

  • I speak 3 languages, but I think he's really good, I would like to speak 3 or 4 languages more.

  • i think there is a fine line between arrogance and confidence. although some of you feel like Stuart is arrogant, I stick to the idea that he is a confident man, opening the world up to the power of communication through language.

read steven pinker if you're interested in how we "acquire" languages.

  • I agree with you. I do not think he is arrogant at all, just really confident and he is kind enough to share his knowledge with others in a very respectful and humble way.

  • wow.

    he's good

    i'm jealous.

i only know 4 languages and i think i'm pretty good...he's beyond that!

  • but which language do you dream in?

  • namo namaha stuart! I'm learning sanskrit and seeing you on youtube just motivates me to keep trying thanks a lot!!

    dhayavadaha,

    Fernando

  • Você falar português ???

    Abraços do Brasil.

  • KHorn Nee geng soot leaw!

  • wow i thought i was lucky but this makes me wanna strive for a 5th language

  • i wish i could learn a 4th language, but its just too hard

  • What languages do you speak?

  • If you want to see a really talented linguist, see "Translating Seven Languages" post.

  • he doesn't speak french :S

  • Sadly NO!... Do you know how much flak I regularly receive for not speaking French!!?? ... I think I will have to do something about it someday soon. :)

  • Just work on it for one or two days and it will be OK ;)

  • Don't worry man I'm luk krueng french and I got the piss taken out of me when I visited Montreal and tried to order food from a diner.

  • I'm Indonesian and I can very well say that his Indonesian is close to perfect.

  • He sure speaks Spanish, but he's far from sounding native.

  • I don't agree, his accent sounds very well, but the sentence he said it doesn't make much sense in spanish.

  • I agree with Luiseut59 - Stu's accent sounds fine, but he says "Si un chico se habla ¿me amas?... se pregunta ¿me amas?" - Which would translate to "If a boy speaks to himself do you love me?... He wonders do you love me?" Oops!

From what Stu says he just let his Italian morph into Spanish, so I imagine he can understand very well, but is unaware of much of the grammar and word usage. He seems to love Asian languages and spends a lot of his time on those, so I think we can let him off! :-)

  • no, because in italian, the phrase is: se un ragazzo dice "mi ami?"...fa la domanda "mi ami?" almost completely different!

  • Wow....amazing. I feel dumb speaking just 3......the accents are spot on and sound native.

  • 你好(Mandarin Chinese),こんいちは (Japanese), Ya'at'eeh (Navajo), Hao (Lakota/Souix), Okii (Blackfeet), Hola (Spanish), Bonjour (French), Buon giorno (Italian), Zdravo (Croatian) and Hi (English)..

Just some stuff I picked up working around tourist early in life.

  • when you spoke the indonesian my ears just lit up "I KNOW THAT!"

  • I only know english and i suck at it. lol

  • ni hao, hola, kumsta, parev, salam, shalom, hello :p

  • Hey. I can speak eight languages(I posted a video on youtube, it's "Luca speaks 8 languages") and I thought I was gifted, but this guy is...just more!

  • no one cares. jump in a hole and die

  • At least he is doing something productive unlike you did in posting this useless comment.

  • I only speak 5 so far,will go for 6 or 7.

I speak: German and Arabic as my native language, then English, French ans Spanish.

Will go for Japanese and let s see what will come next.

I rather speak "only" 7 languages but as perfect as I can ;)

    See ya

  • woooow, that is really amazing. I speak 5 languages but still I have my Indonesian accent whenever I speak in the other 4 languages. He speaks so many languages and still he get the right accent. He sounds like native of those languages. He makes me feel like an idiot.

  • 23 eh? I feel seriously humbled. :|

  • I don't think it's scripted, he's indonesian is quite good. the accent is better than my immitation of an indonesian accent

  • demmnn. dis guy is awesome

I juss only speak and read 4 language.

  • WOW,

  • very cool.

  • Wow, I speak 3. English Spanish and sign.. I'm amazed by him.

  • Well...I speak 5 languages and get them all mixed up. I would never put myself up on T.V. like that. The pressure is tremendous. ha ha Yes...he is talented. I admire him.

  • impressive but I can't help wondering if that whole thing was scripted... then again, I haven't watched any other videos of this guy... just a random thought.

  • That's what I thought, but when I listened, his accents are close or equal to that of a native speaker! You can't speak at that level using those sounds with such precision if you don't truly know the language.

  • It's not. Check out his blog. He offers a lot of interesting techniques. I think Stu really has the right idea on how one can learn a language.

  • No way is that scripted.

  • I envy him. That's amazing.

  • OMG this is what I want to be able to do.

  • Yeah I speak Spanish, english (obviously, French, Italian and Japanese fluently. People who speak 1 language haven't truly tried to learn another one.

  • Ohhh geees! Anyone can do this, you just need to really be interested to know how to speak it. Listening is key LOL. I only know three fluent Languges which is Samoan, Tagalog and of course English. And am Working on KOREAN ^_^ YAY!

  • Woahhh... With all the languages that I know, even HE makes me feel dumb. *is sad*

  • puta que pariu!! this man is amazing!

and her father was the best one too

  • amazing

  • Bloody hell...

  • Cool i've checked his indonesian and mandarin and they're both amazingly fluent...

  • INDEED, HE TOTALLY AMAZED ME!!!!!! i only know English and Spanish and am currently trying to learn German.

  • yeah, amazing. Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

  • kore sugoi nan desu!! KAKKOI JAN~~ Nanka kare ni naritai n da!! TSUTEKI!!!
