  • First off, they're all biologists. Real complex scientific computing is all Linux based, with Windows scattered every now and then. Second, the Mac Pro isn't fast enough to do some of the stuff mathematicians and physists do.

  • All these researchers do biosciences. Anyone doing computational physics would use Linux.

  • Mac for science?!?! r u fuxking kidding me? being a science grad for years, and attended at least 3 universities, all I can say is that we all use PC with Linux. Some times even mainframe clusters. 100% of scientific softwares run on PC and sometimes exclusively Unix/Linux.

  • @busrel Odd, because I could say the same thing only the other way around.

  • Not so sure about the open part.

  • The biggest load of crap i have ever seen.... Makes you lose faith in the human race..

Intel and Amd two biggest Cpu makers, all of there Hardware is available to the public in PC form well before Mac and for a much lower price... There is a reason why 90% of the market is windows...

  • @pcgame28 so, using your "logic". mcdonalds has the best food of any restaurant, and toyota makes the absolute, best car

  • @IgnorantPCFanboys No my "Logic" is PC largest market share, because it caters for everyone, on any budget, Not a price premium because its in a shiny case and steve says its better because it "Works". if you wish to share why you think Apples product is better list facts.

  • @pcgame28 so which computer company wins awards for its customer support?

  • @IgnorantPCFanboys Microsoft Customer Satisfaction for windows 7 is 67% Apples OS Snow Leopard is at 64% up 1 point since last update.

And for your information Microsoft has to look after 90% of all computer mac about 8%.... you work out whats a bigger accomplishment.

  • @pcgame28 what is your source for that?

so toyota is the far better car than ferrari?

  • @IgnorantPCFanboys Well i can not seem to be able to post links on here... not sure if there is away.

however comparing cars to computers is not a valid comparison. As to the car question however, you would find Toyota's usually have 4 seats and are practical for everyday use, where the Ferrari is not.

  • @pcgame28 post links like this: h ttp://w ww. zdnet. com/blog/btl/apple-dominates-pc-customer-satisfaction-hp-dell-acer-improve/39420

    every dot needs a space and H t t p and w w w

    substitute bmw for ferrari

  • Why PC for research: SHEER RAW CALCULATION HORSEPOWER.

  • @Gimmt61 yo do know that all computers are a pc right?

  • @emilclaudell Not all of them (Servers and such), but I get your point. It's just something we say.

  • LOL MACS.

  • NICE FUCKING COMMERCIAL PETER GREEN YOU ARE AN ASSHOLE A PC AND LINUX ON IT OR WINDOWS ARE WAYYYY BETTER INSTEAD USING A PREBUILT "MAC" ONE CAN USE A CUSTOM BUILT MONSTER COMPUTER WITH NVIDIA AND INTELS LINE OF SCIENTIFIC PROCESSOR SORRY TO SAY BUT THIS FUCKING AD AND THE SCIENTISTS SHOWN IN IT ARE GAY NOOBS.....

  • @nrgshkl093 can you use MORE caps?

  • Windows is for soccer moms.

Mac is for them, and smart people.

Linux is for smart geeks like me.

And BSD is just for geniuses.

  • @MetalShreader

And for the people who dual boot windows and linux on their homebuilt PCs?

  • Almost all of these reasons for which you would want a Mac over a Windows PC stated in this video, Linux would be an even better choice. OS X is faster, more stable, and more secure than Windows, and Linux is even more so. Need the absolute most up to date software? Linux is updated far more frequently than Windows or OS X and any bugs or issues discovered are solved immediately with an update often released the day after or even within hours of being discovered, not in 6 weeks.

  • @TheEpisteme but there is no professional software on linux and there won't be in the future.

for example: gimp. it doesn't even come close to photoshop, it may be good for daily use, but hell, it can't even save vector images in an acceptable format

  • @Blinkwing Whats wrong with svg format? Anything gimp cant do that other proprietary image manipulation programs can is because someone has patents that prevent anyone else from making software from doing it no matter how they write the code. There is plenty of professional software and often much more for Linux and Unix than any other platform. Professional is not synonymous with proprietary. As for scientific use the LHC and most of the worlds top research supercomputers run Linux or Unix.

  • @TheEpisteme no doubt, linux is great for servers and mainframes, but i was talking about graphics. gimp's integration of svg is a JOKE.

When I want to open an svg file, i have to specify a size in pixels and gimp translates it to a non-vector format.

There are many professional, free programs like blender and inkscape (I know it can open and edit svg, but its a different kind of program), but just looking at image editing-programs, photoshop is the way to, it's a standard

  • A Mac with the specs they were talking about at the end of this video would cost you a months salary one of your employees back in 2006.

  • jajajaja in this video a cant see any science program to use in mac the only program that shows is the oppen office or something like that , jajajjaja in this video only show in their monitors photos and videos about somethings but they dont use any program running in the macs jajajajajaj

all this video is fake and mac knows that jajajjaja

  • @superivansote jajajjaja

  • WTF is any one of these people know what is OPEN & flexible mean?.. do they at least have 1% of computer knowledge?

  • "Total cost of ownership is low"

    -

    ...not really...

  • @MaoiMeowi2 Yes, calculations were made many times, many years ago...

  • @Simboiss I don't see how. You need to pay for updates, and you can't upgrade your hardware, so you need to buy an entirely new computer whenever you need to upgrade a certain part (or parts).

  • @MaoiMeowi2 Everytime someone says you can't upgrade a Mac's hardware automatically reveals two things about the person speaking. 1) They don't know Apple enough to have a balanced opinion (they only vaguely know about iMacs). 2) They can't consider the fact that the majority of people are NOT geeks who want to play IN their computer all the time...

  • @Simboiss 1. So what is YOUR "balanced opinion"?

    2. Most of the time? How long does it take to put your pants on in the morning, 15 minutes?

Yes what is? I didn't say "no" to anything in that last comment.

It doesn't count as the PC's problem if you throw it against the wall in frustration at the IQ necessary to operate it properly. What, is two mouse buttons too much for you to handle?

  • @MaoiMeowi2 It looks like you came directly from the 90s...

  • @MaoiMeowi2 Ahem, yes, it is. One of the factors of a good TCO is average lifespan, which is 50 months for Macs and 30 months for Windows PCs...

  • @Simboiss 50 months of slavery vs 30 months of freedom

  • @tamilan82 Heheh, trying to appear witty to hide guilt? That's quite common. Now if you don't know what makes you a slave by NOT owning a Mac, then it's time to open your eyes. Rejoice, for it's never too late to appreciate reality...

  • open???? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL I JUST CAN'T STOP LAUGHING :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • you call the mac shitty common-grade, brandless hardware "STATE OF THE ART HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING"!? that's enough proof that these asses reading a script.

  • Mac is for shitheads and people that want to spend money. You can get a faster pc for the cost of any mac.

  • OK well to start off the part were it says, "jobs that used to take weeks, now take hours with macs." at 3:12 or something like that, is false. Just changing from a computer doesn't mean your going to be able to read faster or examine your notes or whatever faster. Its stupid if you think about it . Oh and I'm not being a mac hater if someones going to say that.

  • @webmaster100R I'd beg to differ - if you're spending a lot of your time devoted to crash recovery and overly complicated workflows due to a poorly conceived OS and GUI - and you're software's inconsistent - you lose a LOT of time. Believe me - I've been back and forth tons of times and ALWAYS prefer either Mac OSX or Solaris (back when) to anything else.

  • @webmaster100R It's not the right way to interpret it. Most of the time, Macs yield small time savers, but many times a day in many ways possible. Over a year, it amounts to a lot of saved time...

  • I fucking hate PC's, everyone should just use a mac.

  • wow total BS..

If these researchers had any brain they would be using linux

  • @musashikyo

if you had any brain you would not say that... OS X is Free BSD Unix which is very much linux like... Everything in Linux exists there

    Now why choose a mac?

coz they make hardware and software together so everything is completely compatible

  • @musashikyo i agree. maybe they get payed by apple.

  • @musashikyo WTF? Linux is the worst and hardest OS to use, Mac os 10 is the easiest OS to use which was the whole point of this video

  • @musashikyo they woudn't be able to use those programs/app on linux..., if you had any brain you wouldn't had comment that...

  • @musashikyo exactly

  • Wonder how much the people here were paid to say this stuff??? I use both a Mac and a PC for school on a daily basis, and personally, I would much rather be on my PC than use my mac for work. If I'm feelin artsy then sure I'll jump on my Mac, but if I want to get some actual work done, then I use a real Computer and work on a PC.

  • LOL yeap it can be true just like buying an alienware ALX X58 for $3,399 + Taxes just to play video games. That's just been stupid don't you think =D

  • wait i smell a scam, they don't put that much processor power on a normal mac. that's cause they sell them to scientist who have money in there pocket. you have 3,0000 dollars to spend?

  • No wonder all this money that's being donated to cancer hasn't been enough to cure it, the scientists are just using the grant money to buy RAM for $100 a gig. Fucking Macs, wouldn't have a problem if they charged less, or just sold the OS, but no, you have to buy Apple certified RAM and other parts and put it in your shitty Apple mobo.

  • You don't have to buy Apple certified RAM, regular RAM will work.. Crucial, Kingston, w/e.. Mac's are regular computer parts that Apple has selectively chosen and designed the OS and drivers for. This is why they are so well done and integrated with.

  • "Mac's are regular computer parts that Apple has selectively chosen and designed the OS and drivers for." For starters, that's not grammatically correct. Second, what you're explaining is Apple Certified RAM. If the OS has selective drivers for the part designed by the OS, than that part is Apple Certified. Windows on the other hand, allows the manufacturer to create their own drivers and load them onto windows.

  • Also, I know your knowledge of hardware is limited because you're talking about a brand's compatibility with a motherboard.

  • 1. You shouldn't be attacking someone like the way you just did.. it's extremely rude.

    2. I wasn't explaining Apple Certified RAM, I was explaining the parts in general. Apple picks the parts that they see fit and design/optimize the drivers for the parts that they chose. This is why the OS/Hardware are stable.

    3. I'm not a hardware junkie, i'm a software junkie. My knowledge on software itself and the way the system works is very high.

  • Rude? You're upset about rudeness on the internet? Fuck off. You obviously have no idea about hardware so I really can't explain it to you. You're probably a Mac user and have no idea about the beneficial sides of Windows-based PC's which are more complicated than the beneficial sides of Macs. Apple motherboards integrate drivers for RAM with low voltages. Apple memory works on PC's, but when talking about memory, it almost never works the other way around.

  • I can guarantee that Tri-channel DDR3 PC16000 2000Mhz RAM will NOT work on Macs, no matter what brand it is.

  • lmfao!! what an immature brat. I won't argue with a little kid since it's just a waste of time, and for your experience my major in computer science has helped me a lot in life. 10+ years of Windows Experience, 4+ Years of Linux and UNIX based OS experience. Do the math.

  • Immature brat? I'm a brat because...? Explain your whole thought please, it's frustrating enough talking to a person who acknowledges that they don't know what they're talking about when it comes to hardware and still argues with someone who does. So you don't have any Mac experience, correct?

  • No.

Linux is free, stable, and in some sense, minimalistic/efficient.

  • i know, but needs training!

  • Funny how they don't show the software they are using; all you see is a few pictures on the screen and a 3D image of a brain being played in QuickTime. To my knowledge most scientist use either pure Unix or Linux because of the flexibility of the system. They also don't use commercial software; they create their own custom software specifically for their needs.

  • I use Windows for Aeronautical and Ballistic science.

  • What about that Mac virus last week?

Mac users tend to get fewer viruses cause Mac OS makes up less of the market share.

  • youre a dick

  • STFU NOOB

  • OMFGBBTEHQ IDIFTL :)

  • Marketing hype - there are videos exactly like this for Windows... It all boils down to the apps running on it. Windows 2003 sever is the backbone of our 50,000+ workforce. We have customers as big as Kaiser running Windows software. "Networking standard protocols" LMAO - what a joke. And if you're talking raw computing power - try an HP server with 128 XEON processors and 1/2 TB of memory...

  • 128 XEONs is certainly faster. But how about 2000 XEONs on the Big Mac at Virginia Tech. It's only a question of scalability. But what about cost? The initial Big Mac (G5) took 6 weeks to build at a non-discounted price of $5-6 million. At the time (2003), that was unheard of for a super computer. And it made the top 10 supercomputer list. So it's not that Macs cannot keep up for science use. Or they are too cost prohibitive or limited. It's just a tool. Don't expect it to not get better.

  • @ribaldi - There is a big difference between a single machine with 128 processors and a cluster of machines totaling 2000+ processors.

  • I was pointing out how Macs are not limited by packages sold by Apple. Organizations had scaled up parallel processing with Macs using off the shelf parts to assemble super computers. It's been done at Virginia Tech and COLSA and was very cost effective even without discounts from Apple. Both are still in the top 500 list. It's just an example of Macs used in raw computing power situations. BTW - it's 2000 cores and not processors.

  • Ever try to use SSH/SFTP/SCP natively on Windows? - of course not, because wait, it's not there.. How about an X11 server for getting a display from those big fancy UNIX boxes? oh wait, again - you can't - now you can hack together a solution with opensource software - but again, you need tech savvy folks, or an IT guy to take care of that for you. You don't on a mac, that's the point.

fwiw, trying to impress people with a box that I can buy from HP (128 Xeons) doesn't impress anyone.

  • These guys were obviously payed to say that BS.

  • And they obviously don't have a bloody clue what they're talking about. Every serious research centre I know runs Linux on both servers and clients, due to its incredible customisation, or occasionally Windows (usually for more casual tasks).

  • Universities also use GNU/Linux and *BSD quite a lot for research, server's and, of course, customization.

And yeah, Microsoft do make themselves look bad. They just don't know it ;)

  • its not BS. Macs r better. have u even tried a Mac? i bet u havnt!!! u just go by wat people say bout it.

  • Yeah macs are so much better.

That's why they switched architecture in 2005 to x86. And they are using video cards traditionally used in PCs.

Why make the Mac a PC if it's so much better?

This is just an expensive PC any idiot can put together himself, packaded in some stylish case.

Totally scientific... Those 'scientists' are either morons or actors.

And this is obviously a paid advertisment to trick people who know nothing about computers in general into buying an overpriced PC

  • oh my word, i had to stop watching at halfway to avoid being hit by macs MASSIVE EGO. holy shit its still coming... getting....crushed...

  • um and Microsoft doesnt have an ego? All companies make their products look good. If people like the mac so what, if people like pc's so what. I love like Microsoft's word, excel and powerpoint but I HATE WINDOWS. Thats why I got a mac. WIndows use to be better than Apple but now it sucks.

  • Actually, no. Microsoft is pretty good at making themselves look bad. :D

  • @Astar211 you can run MS EXCEL, WORD, POWERPOINT on MAC

  • Is that why the server at my school is a mac and the server is down every other week and it finaly crashed

  • i from pharmacy field, and mac help me a lot

  • Once you go Mac, you won't go back. 

  • @internetworld7 same applies to being a massive self satisfied cunt.

  • Macs DO NOT integrate in a multi-platform environment as well as Windows machines. Does the IT admin that they interview know that OSX Server is seen as a WINDOWS NT SERVER, NOT a member of the Active Directory? Does he know that the Mac CANNOT be controlled by group policy completely? Does he know that you have to use ADMIt Mac to get (most) active directory features in OSX?

I buy the manager's BS. I work on a mixed mac/pc network environment.

  • No offence, but I think that lakorai's arguments were somewhat better than your "you have no clue"-statements.

  • I highly disagree with the statement from the scientists that macs do not need an IT department. All computers must be secured against security threats; I would think scientific secrets on the file server would be pretty valuable on the open market.

Oh and the crappy video card selection for the Mac Pro doesn't exactly help you render molecules faster. I don't see the high end Quadro Plex for Mac OS X.

  • Tell me you are only joking? "crappy video card selection"? LOL. You're either joking or amazing misinformed. Fact of the matter is, MacBook Pros come with one of the best graphic cards for a Note Book in the industry. NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor with dual-link DVI support; 256MB of GDDR3 memory. You can hardly call that "crappy". It's time to get educated on the facts and stop this low life internet hating. 

  • Yeah, but you pay triple the price of the hardware just for the fancy apple logo.

  • Yes the nvidia 8600M GT is a crappy GPU to be using for rendering, it maybe okay for gaming, but it it not made to be used for real work.

There is a big difference between a gaming video card and a workstation video card.

  • How does that make sense? Graphics are graphics, framerate per second, resolution and rendering speed. A good graphics card for gaming would be at least fair for anything else, such as Maya. Besides, the 8600 card is 2 years old & was only in mac laptops. The Nvidia Graphics card is still pretty powerfull, I have one & also own the latest Nividia graphics card. I do many Maya & FCP rendering on both & couldn't be happier with the power. It also depends on your UI. Mac OSX is notorious for GUI.

  • @ljbumann

No they are not. Workstation video cards are made to render images much more precisely than gaming cards.Workstation video cards are also more costly and are more stable than standard video cards.

You are a macfan, so of course you are going to be happy with your Mac. People like you practically worship their computers.

  • Workstation "graphics cards" is the main CPU on your computer, your "video" card is for media. Yes I love macs because they're a great computing experience - the best. You need to do alot of research.

  • @ljbumann

Graphics cards and video cards are one in the same, the word is interchangeable.

Graphics cards are the GPU for the computer, not CPU, that would be the processor.

Macs are not "the best." You may like them, but that does not mean that else does as well. I find them to be too damn limited.

    Take your own advice.

  • @grandmaster1fc You just said what I said, you see in my comment - workstation "graphics card" notice the quotations? First you were talking about workstation graphics & now you're saying video & graphics cards are the same! No shit, you really are a pc of shit. I know a lot more than you do, obviously. Every computer has workstation "graphics" and a graphic card, pay attention to the " " again. I think Pixar & most major Hollywood production Suites would take my side about macs, OMFG.

  • @ljbumann

Pixar uses primary Linux, but they also use Windows and Macs.

I was talking about a "workstation video card" vs a "standard video card." The workstation video cards are used for specialty purposes where extreme rendering (long hours/intensity) is required, obviously most people don't use them.

What do you mean by "you are a pc shit"?

Are you not using a pc (personal computer) to watch youtube videos and post comments?

  • @ljbumann u need to learn a lot about computers..this is the different between MAC users and others. only dummes and brainless people will buy a MAC.

  • @tamilan82 or people who are sick and tired of Microsoft's bs and want their computer to work for a change. ;)

  • there talking about the mac pro but all the macs u see are powermacs and a macbook pro... :S

  • I use Windows and Mac everyday. Macs are very easy to use and in the rare case you do need to fix a Mac you can do it yourself. On a PC I bet I spend 10% of the time or more doing maintenance, and reboots or having a shop do repairs and upgrades. Macs are faster and more productive I 100% agree. They are more expensive up front but cheaper in the long run with less down time.

  • put thos powerhouse MACs to good use by running Folding@Home (do google search n download). Run by Stanford University, the project aims to find out how proteins 'fold' and therefore lead to possible cures in types of cancer and other diseases.

  • Why dont we all come together and make linux better than mac and windows? I can see linux pushing both out of the way in the next 10 years maybe 20 but i have a good feeling since linux is slowly creeping in to the market. The best part about linux is that its open source all the way to the bone. I personally like the unix base since its more stable and smooth. Linux has promise.

  • Linux wont be in the market because all its software is free. That means no real commercial value for a lot of companies. Its sad but true. Not insulting linux or anything! Just I cannot see it in the market.

  • Thats true but that doesnt mean people wont switch one day. Some people dont play games which means it wont be hard to go over to lets say....ubuntu. World of warcraft works fine and ventrilo can work so i have converted already. I dont know someday micrsoft will die.

  • Linux is already very popular behind the scenes; many major Hollywood studios such as Pixar, Dreamworks, Sony and so forth use Linux to produce their movies. The science community has always been using either Unix or Linux. To top it off, the majority of web servers in the world are running on Linux. Linux is only a small player when it comes to the average home/office user.

  • not really too much true... and thats not true either. yeah they may have a awesome mac pro, but you can build a PC with faster processors, more ram, more hard drive space, and all your devices will actully work =D

  • that wuz such a load of bull.... the most important factors whe it comes to computers, is performance, afordability, and compatability.... the only good thing macs got goin for them is performance which is jus about as good as the marginal above average pc... fortunatelly for them, they are very good at marketing

  • Looks like a company got supplied free Macs and got paid off to do this, :-). I'm not saying Macs aren't better at many tasks, and I'm not going to argue about where they excel in comparison to where PC's excel. What I do want to point out is that the number of Mac ads that are out there right now that directly or indirectly bash PC's is overwhelming, and just because of those bash ads, I'm being detracted somewhat from the Apple/Mac market.

  • You know I watch shows like NOVA all the time and all I see are macs. Maybe a few SGIs and Creys.

  • I work in the U.S. Gov't with renowned scientists who are unfortunately stuck with our crappy PCs. Most of the scientists bring their own Macs because otherwise, they can't innovate. Too bad the gov't is behind the times. Macs are the best!

  • If u use programs like Autodesk Maya or Photoshop, Mac OS is the right choice for u, but I agree with Yugo234 about windows. It's definitely better for students or science than Mac. Anyhow, I use Maya and i'm gettin vista.

  • I have never seen a mac being used at a University, its all Windows 2000/XP or if you use HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) its most likely Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. As a science student, a mac is the worst system you can possibly use.

  • Yugo234:

You must be a PC user who thinks if it's not in stores it doesn't exist.

  • yugo234, My son is in public middle school and they have macs in his classroom! I dont know what university you speak of, but there is probably a pretty good chance that nobody has ever heard of the university that you speak of!

Don't knock good technology just because you know nothing of it!

  • i got a g4 and im definately gettin a pc with vista next

  • macs are for people who dont know how to use a computer

  • I've used a Windows PC all my life, and the moment i got on a Mac, it felt soo good.

  • yea because they look pretty and dont bother you with things like control over what youre doing

  • well u dont need somewthing that takes control of what u doin

  • Yes me too, I like challenge, I like to take risk, Live one day at the time, I like adrenaline rush, sky diving with a parachute thats been folded by a 3 years old kid not knowing if it will open.. I like that feeling.. So I bought a Mac, WOW I feel like this everytime I turn it on..

  • not really. 90% of movie editors and special efects use macs. macs are good for simplicity and the power they have. get one. try it. youll never go back.

  • o no, I've had one, and i want my PC back. lol

  • Um... The point of using a computer is to simplify tasks, not to waste your life constantly troubleshooting PC problems. Macs are simple, powerful and innovative.

  • Well said purplerodriguez

  • alienmode:

    Please explain.

  • @ alienmode..

That's certainly untrue. The most advanced people in the industry use macs to make their jobs easier not to make them dumber.

  • So true, they remind me of the one TV show where Paris Hilton Worked on a farm for a while....All looks, but don't do any real work. hahaha

  • not bad i love mac
