A great footballer. Those 9 goals at 89 GF, FANTASTIC,!!! but some of the marks shown were not marks. Umpires paid them for attempt and by the crowd response
Several of those wouldn't be paid with today's interperatations of the rules, sometimes to the detriment of the game. There are plenty other better marks I've seen Ablett take, which he held, not just "controlled" with 1 or 2 half hearted touches, over his career.
I am a Geelong supporter and loved watching Gary play, however the number 1 mark should not of been payed! He had absolutely no control. Like if you agree.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest if not the greatest to have ever played. Nevertheless, maybe one or two of those marks (looking at number 2 especially) might not have been paid 10 times out of 10.
Garry im a big eagles fan , but i loved nothing more mate than to watch eagles play gelong simply because i knew you were playing , your one of the best there ever was.my top 5 players ever , garry ablett, james hurd ,juddy, ben couzz, peter matera.
GOD, and now where all blessed to witness the son of God, this guy could sell his sperm for $10,000 a pop, stick a footy in there hands at birth and i predict a 50/50 chance of producing a superstar.
Thanks for posting - just learning about this great sport and they referenced the 1994 mark in the. book I have. I knew I'd find it here and it was great to see. Several othger spectacular marks, but indeed the 1994 stands out! Thank you
I too was there in 1994 (age 14) when he took that no. 1 grab, my voice was hoarse for a week after it! Sends tingles down the spine watching it again that's for sure...
i rate number 1 for photographic opportunity but he had the sit, number 3 was as good if not better than number 1. Some of his pack marks are unbelievable, if only he played today with todays camera capabilities!! thanks for the video!
great player, but its funny how some of those were paid more for the effort rather than actually taking the mark. a spoiler has more control of the mark than some of those paid marks
I am glad majority enjoy this video and thankyou for the responses. Everyone is entitled to their opinions which makes AFL the greatest sport. I just truly feel that the number 1 mark is so unique I haven't quite seen a player do what he has been able to do apart from perhaps Brett Burton in terms of pure natural leaping ability. I am still searching high and low for that attempted mark way back in 1988 round 1 @ Kardinia park v Eagles where he got up so high he was walking on their heads
@OutlawMCC Modra (2x AA, Coleman medalist, 95 goal of the year, 5 time leading goal kicker for Adelaide, 3 marks of the year) kicked nearly 600 goals from 165 games. I wouldn't consider him one of the greats, but he was certainly one of the most entertaining to watch. Carman doesn't come close to him, and I'm saying all this as a Collingwood supporter.
@cluenat I respect your point of View. So you wouldnt classify Phil Carman exciting to watch ? Or are you too young to have seen him play as a Collingwood Supporter.Phil Carman made his debut at age 24 ( took that long to convince him to play VFL) Missed winning the BROWNLOW after breaking his leg and missing 9 Weeks, finished 3 Votes behind. HE Missed NINE games ! What is Tony's best result ?
@OutlawMCC Yes, I never saw him play (yup, young and ignorant, but I'm learning), so my opinion obviously doesn't mean too much. I can only judge him by his highlights and stats that I've seen. What we know is the Brownlow medal is prominently a midfielder's award. Lockett is the only key position to win it (Carey, Matthews, Ablett, etc never won one, while Woewodin, Cooney, Liberatore, etc did).
@OutlawMCC Continued: When Carman finished top 3 he was averaging 19 disposals and 2.7 goals a game (his career average was 14 disposals and 2 goals). Modra averaged 8 disposals for his career, but he was a specialist goal kicker averaging 3.6 a game.
Sorry Footylovr - 'Mark number 1' was not a mark. My uncle, who played over 400 (local) club games in his football career himself, was a staunch Geelong fan, and loved Ablett, would not let you say a bad word about him. He was at the Geelong Collingwood game when Ablett was awarded this mark. He always said while it was a sensational effort, it was not a 'mark' and was only paid because the umpire was unsighted and made an assumption.
of course number one is a mark... he managed to control the ball on his way down and had it in his grasp as he hit the ground... it was only his impact with the ground that took it away from him
@sliat1981 He controlled it all the way to the ground. There's another version of it in HD where you can watch it in slow motion. 1994 mark of the year. The ball bounced off his chest/shoulder when he landed hard on the ground. He brought it under control to the ground. That's a mark.
Excellent video, production wise. Very well done. I hate the other vidoes with the loud obnoxious music over it, drowning out the commentary, More people need to make videos like this, or at least turn off the crap music. The commentary is all you need.
lol sorry but you are wrong. the ball fell to the ground with him. its called gravity. morons like you call it 'control' and 'amazing'. should have never been paid.
@jonnobarrington2007 Funny how 'morons' like you seem to neglect the fact that the umpire is more knowledgeable AND in a better field position than you to judge such things...
@jonnobarrington2007 thing is, ablett pulled it to his chest, deliberately, therefore he had some sort of control and he meant to do it... so back in your box, jealousy is a horrible thing, go back to ur computer and shutup, obviously uve never actually played a game of footy in ur life and if u have u werent any good
Two sides from the western side of Melbourne playing at Arctic Park with an attendance barely into five figures..ah the logic of the old VFL...ah..but the brilliance of Ablett.
all great grabs... does anybody else think number 8 should be higher? I think Gaz has taken better grabs than that one against the swans. I am still trying to work out how he marked #3?!?!!? Number 1, well mark or no mark, it was paid by the umpire. MARK!!! crazy stuff! thanks for the video!
actually no he didnt, when u look at the slow motion bit, he had the ball controlled in his arm till he hit the ground and it was the impact with the ground that knocked it out. Therefore its a mark :-D
I'm a Collingwood supporter but Gary Ablett Snr is one of my favourite players to watch. He was a genius at the game. I loved the number 1 mark...simply amazing.
And the great thing as well, he would always have another player to contend with and sometimes triple teamed to just try and stop his prodigious jump and marking abilities.
This athlete was like no other and if these top 10 plays aren't proof simply type in Gary Ablett highlight reel and you will get a glimpse of this freak of a player.
Mate this guy would shit on any player in the game today......I mean you get a player to just boot the ball directly high in the air and have Ablett snr and Riewoldt contest I betcha anything Gazza would have either out bustled him or simply leaped on top of his head to mark.
And hey, when i was a kid i used to go up for screamers yelling YABLEETTTT! But you obviously must be a one-eyed Cats supporter if you can't see that these wouldn't be paid into todays game. Oh and when i said 6 i meant #6 not 6 of the marks. The others are great but a few would not get paid in today's game
Ablett snr is not playing today, so the fact u make about a few of his marks would not be paid today means nothing...like footy said...just sit back and enjoy "God" do some of his finest work.
