@rainxxxx This sounds like the PC-DOS version to me. I had it on PC like 15 years ago, and this is one of the few clips on youtube that sounds the same as back then.
@SylphDS Yeah, my family had it in PC-DOS as well, and though the sound in this clip sounds a lot like that version, it is not the same. Where the music is supposed to go up, it doesn't. This is the Arcade version, which looks exactly the same, but the sounds are slightly different. It is so far the best match to the PC-DOS game though, because that was what I was looking for and haven't found... Yet...
The music sounds like they recorded some random person who just bought their 1st keyboard & is just messiing around with it. I don't remember the music being this bad in the arcade years ago.
for its age, it's a really good game for the pc. but like Wrim said, the music seems so off-key sometimes :-) but hey, at that time, the pc could only "bleep". to bad they never did a proper version when the pc became much more powerfull. luckilly 4 the emulation programs then :-D
@petros001 : the commodore sid sound chip indeed had lots of wonderfull tunes, but the commodore 64 version of outrun had a choppy framerate, and terrible gameplay. the pc version may have terrible music, but gameplay was more smooth, and so was the scrolling :-)
@musicmaniac1965 but pcs had like an Intel 8088 clock rate of 4.77mhz the c64 only had like 0.9 MHz yet was running faster then the amiga which had the 68000 core outrun was developed on infact it was running faster then outruns actual hardware which at the time was like 24mhz, was a little beast heh, the pc was developed for wordproccessing and has always been graphicly & soundly shite and is why its so smooth cos its flippin slow ,should rename to 'dont outrun drive safe, no way is that 299km
@mucker3001 hahaha, i know, some racing games also does not get much speed. that's why i love outrun 2, coast to coast, and online arcade so much :-), and not to forget, the master of speed himself: the BURNOUT series, but burnout revenge is my favorite :-D
it's good to see how technology and gaming has progressed sinse pong :-)
@rainxxxx indeed, the C64 version gives me still the shivers. only one version could do even worce when it comes to speed and gameplay: the amiga 500 :-D that game was even slower than a snail on valium :-)
@musicmaniac1965 the atari st version was slightly worse than the amiga, i dont think it was a sprrd problem, just god awful graphics and a lousy dropdown menu system!
Epic game and music.

I wonder how a car can go as fast as 280km/hr with 2 gears (only H +L) lol :) Thanks for uploading it's simply a classic! :)
astrotech 2 years ago
Oh boy, I first did not know one can shift gears and was trying to play through on the low gear. I got only to the third junction.

@SvenSiegmund you cant get past the first stange in low gear!

Hahaha I love this game, but the music in this version is horrible, it's so off-key sometimes! I like how they animated the hills and slopes :)
