  • Awesome sound!

  • Nice steam movie. Big train!!

  • The headlight at 0:54, 2:14 & 4:34 make a very good rifle round target!

I think I would use a Barrett .50 caliber field gun to be sure to get a good boiler puncture!

Junk all the remaining steam locomotives! Junk 2472!

  • @Cockroach2008 Is there any point to this comment?

  • @AndreiTupolev Sure is! It would be nice to see this old junker being used for an artillery target.

  • Damn, thats some serious wheel slip @1:10!!

  • Great show! I know this is the former SP right of way through the canyon. Are the wig wag signals also of SP vintage? I remember wig wag signals on this line from Niles to Altamont, but that was 40+ years ago.

  • In the late 30’s and early 40’s our family used to picnic in Niles Canyon. We would eat tuna fish sandwiches, potato chips and bottled cokes, then I would wade in the creek. The SP was up on one side of the canyon and the WP on the other, there would be one train or the other running through every 30 minutes to an hour, it was pretty exciting for a little kid :)

  • Damn that's some major slippage!

  • I can just see it now. On a major cross california excursion three Southern Pacific P-10 Pacifics triple heading with an all daylight colored consist. One can only dream however these days.

  • Why does it spin its wheels? at 1:09

  • @vwbeetleowner: icars98 posted "somone must have oiled the points..." which is the best theory I've heard so far, as the wheel slip started right near the top of the switch.

  • @cchan006 yeah thats probably the best theory, I mean if it was going to slip like that usually would happen when the train first starts moving, by the time it did it should of had enough momentum so it shouldn't have happened!!! Was a weird event!!! anyways I didn't even know this engine was still in service lol but I don't live on the West Coast so I haven't seen Steam on a mainline since 1993? I think? seen them on privately lines such as in Chattanooga at TVRM!!!

  • @cchan006 actually its some oil but its really the engineer over throwing the throttle and it pushes to much power to the drive wheels making them slip the more its over turn on the throttle valve the more they slip when they hit a slick spot of the track so yes oil most likely was involved.

  • Maybe someone must have oiled the points and forgot to close the line temporarily

  • get a fucking tripod.

  • cool video I finally got to ride the Niles Canyon railway a few weeks ago I was luckey to be on the final run of the season I was hopeing for 2472 but oh well I had the #2 steamengine coming from Niles and the NW2 comeing back it was my first time driveing to California from Texas and it was well worth the stop I was laying over in San Jose and had a few days to kill between pickups I want to drive back when 2472 is running

  • dumbnut at 4:55

  • Again @ 4:30 to 5:25 that scene when the Steam Engine crosses the Iron Bridge is CLASSIC.

  • WOW ! The Engine Whistling & Chugging sound is the Best Music which can beat any Rock Music (0:01 to 1:40)

  • Definitly a good example of brute torque when those drivers break loose at 1:10. What a gorgous 4-6-2. Noth'in like that sound of an old steame Loved the post!!! this was great:):):):):). The whistle has that certain sound. Makes ya feel like ya just turned the clock back 70yrs:):):):):) Especially liked the wig-wag signal on the crossing and that bell ring'in too.

  • Idiot crossing tracks at 2:03.

  • i wonder if there was a rail greaser in that spot.

  • The wheel slip did occur over a switch, and there could have been grease for the points?

  • Whoa got alittle slippery there.

  • That was not good for her drivers there. Wheel slips wear down drive wheel tires.

  • Thanks for sharing, Great sound of the wheel slip

  • Wheelslip to?

  • SP 6 chime ehh?

  • I was able to find that hill you got you first shot off of this last Sun, man it was a nice day.

  • super przeżycie jazda takim pociągiem !!!!!!

  • Thanks for sharing this vid. You got some really great shots of that beautiful Pacific.

  • This engine has to be one of the prettiest pacific-type engines to be running in the world.

  • I definatlly agree with you on that

  • Is it still around and running?

  • Yup. 2472 ran again this year, during the Memorial Days holiday recently.

  • Yeah, I was on both the Spring Steam & Memorial Day trips this year and I joined GGRM back in January.

  • I was on that ride, my first ride behind 2472.

  • Ten filmik najbardziej podoba się mojemu wnukowi ,skończył niedawno roczek.Ja również 40 lat temu jeździłem na parowozach w Toruniu.

  • Very pretty engine! I also adore 4501!

  • WOW. Awsome Runbys. I love that engine. She has the best sounding whistle in the Western USA. =D

  • she does have a pretty nice whistle doesn't she........ how do you think her whistle stands up against the Union Pacific 844?

  • and if I'm any good with whistle sounds, it seems she has a 6 chime? (i'm not REAL good with whistles so just a guess)

  • I'm a GGRM volunteer, 2472 does have an SP 6 chime

  • Yay I'm right for once! XD

  • cool I thought that was th case but I wasnt sure it sure sounds good

  • The Daylights coming to Owosso Mi the end of July for 4 days to party with the Polar Express 1225

  • The '49 is leaving Portland July 3 and returning OCTOBER 20!!!!

  • She has that unique SP 4-6-2 exhaust that I haven't heard on any other engine BEAUTIFUL!

  • It sounds just like 4449's exaust too : )

  • HA. Nooooo, It sound like the 2472 has a little chirp when she's really working. 4449 still has her Lima blast nozzel.

  • Well in person, 2472's exaust sounds very similar to 4449's.

  • that huy there at 2:10 took a chance, but i think he just wanted a good photo :)

  • umm.... sand please

  • She's Beautiful.

  • That was some bad wheel slip.

  • lol he waved

  • Красиво.То есть великолепно.Спасибо за видео.

Beautifully. That is it is magnificent. Thanks for video.

  • Comment removed

  • 4:31 i like to take pictures at that spot when theyre runnig

  • I still love to look back on the 10yrs w/PLA

    87-97...

  • WoW, quite a wheelslip there. Great shots.

  • I nominate that #1 for world's greatest locomotive burnout!!!!!!!

  • I'll second that.

  • Yes very cool and also very hard on the engine. I wonder how many leaky water tubes they had that day.

  • I dunno, seeing the 2472's boiler was completely rebuilt and all boiler tubes were and pipes were redone, I'd say none of them leaked. Basically from the inside out post-2003, and post-FRA inspections, she is a new locomotive with PLENTY of TLC.

  • Yes but when they slip, they suck cold air into the boiler, causing the boiler tubes to shrink, and then water leaks.

  • Wheels slipping would suck cold air into boiler? Wouldn't any leak in boiler cause boiler explosion? Bad on tires and rails but can't see how wheel slip would be any different on the dynamics of the boiler than if the engine was moving at high speed.

  • yes i learned this from the movie rock trains and they had to pull the engine for a week to repair the leaky tubes. it would not cause a boiler exposition because the heat is still there and it is slow enough to where it does not dramatically change the temp to cause exposition.

  • A leak would be very small and if possible, the fire can be carried as hot as possible so as to heat the flues, flue sheets and crown sheet to expand and kill the leak. I probably could've worded that better....

  • It would have to be an everyday occurance with little to no maintainence for this to happen to a boiler. Yes it could happen, but the most damage is to the wheels. Mostly cause it is more work to replace a tire than a flue,

  • HaHa lmao

  • @trainboy94 Wheelslip maybe, burnout, no. Check out Cumbres & Toltec 487s burnout, also my favorite steam locomotive ever.

  • Awsome wheel slip. Beats spinning car tires by a long shot.

  • Nice wheel slip...

  • I was there at Brightside to. I can see myself haha

  • Ok, so you were the fella that helped me get onto that dirt clump at Brightside... I see myself once, and our car once! Awesome videos, 5 stars my friend.

  • I hope you got yourself some great photos of the 2472! Thanks for watching.

  • cool I didnt know the 2472 was back nice I sure love these SP wigwags in the video I have one of them in my barn still in pieces needing resteration I plan to get it out soon and try to do so but the banner is in bad shape

  • Actually those wigwags were donated from the Santa Fe in Richmond, not SP.

  • cool thanks for correcting me on that part I wasnt sure at least they got saved mine i have out here on my farm is in such bad shape it will take alot of money to restore it as the UPRR destroyed it when they removed it and the banner is almost totally rusted out from being on the Texas coast area in Houston plus UP tried cutting it up when it was removed unsucessfully so they cut the bridge holding the moter and the bolts of the base and let it drop bending the hell out of it

  • The best steam burnout i ever seen!

  • Excellent Video!! Nothing like a steam engine/

  • Southern Pacific Pacific

  • Good old steam engines!

  • great video!

  • very nice 5 stars

  • This video is awesome, I am speechless. So good to see that beauty running again. Looks like the engineer was trying to do a burnout there in the beginning. lol.

  • Awsome shots!

  • Like the Macho Man used to say...

OOOOOOHHHH YEAAAAA! I like it a lot!

Thanks for sharing this! 5***** although it deserves 50*!!!! Wow he roasted the wheels right there also! lol.

  • O my gawd!!! That is Niles Canyon, California!!! I have been there!!! Last time I was there was in the year 2002!!! I have also been to Niles, Michigan lol. 5 star vid!!!

  • Awesome huh? I knew you'd like that!

  • You were right, I liked it alot!
