Great show! I know this is the former SP right of way through the canyon. Are the wig wag signals also of SP vintage? I remember wig wag signals on this line from Niles to Altamont, but that was 40+ years ago.
In the late 30’s and early 40’s our family used to picnic in Niles Canyon. We would eat tuna fish sandwiches, potato chips and bottled cokes, then I would wade in the creek. The SP was up on one side of the canyon and the WP on the other, there would be one train or the other running through every 30 minutes to an hour, it was pretty exciting for a little kid :)
I can just see it now. On a major cross california excursion three Southern Pacific P-10 Pacifics triple heading with an all daylight colored consist. One can only dream however these days.
@vwbeetleowner: icars98 posted "somone must have oiled the points..." which is the best theory I've heard so far, as the wheel slip started right near the top of the switch.
@cchan006 yeah thats probably the best theory, I mean if it was going to slip like that usually would happen when the train first starts moving, by the time it did it should of had enough momentum so it shouldn't have happened!!! Was a weird event!!! anyways I didn't even know this engine was still in service lol but I don't live on the West Coast so I haven't seen Steam on a mainline since 1993? I think? seen them on privately lines such as in Chattanooga at TVRM!!!
@cchan006 actually its some oil but its really the engineer over throwing the throttle and it pushes to much power to the drive wheels making them slip the more its over turn on the throttle valve the more they slip when they hit a slick spot of the track so yes oil most likely was involved.
cool video I finally got to ride the Niles Canyon railway a few weeks ago I was luckey to be on the final run of the season I was hopeing for 2472 but oh well I had the #2 steamengine coming from Niles and the NW2 comeing back it was my first time driveing to California from Texas and it was well worth the stop I was laying over in San Jose and had a few days to kill between pickups I want to drive back when 2472 is running
Definitly a good example of brute torque when those drivers break loose at 1:10. What a gorgous 4-6-2. Noth'in like that sound of an old steame Loved the post!!! this was great:):):):):). The whistle has that certain sound. Makes ya feel like ya just turned the clock back 70yrs:):):):):) Especially liked the wig-wag signal on the crossing and that bell ring'in too.
I dunno, seeing the 2472's boiler was completely rebuilt and all boiler tubes were and pipes were redone, I'd say none of them leaked. Basically from the inside out post-2003, and post-FRA inspections, she is a new locomotive with PLENTY of TLC.
Wheels slipping would suck cold air into boiler? Wouldn't any leak in boiler cause boiler explosion? Bad on tires and rails but can't see how wheel slip would be any different on the dynamics of the boiler than if the engine was moving at high speed.
yes i learned this from the movie rock trains and they had to pull the engine for a week to repair the leaky tubes. it would not cause a boiler exposition because the heat is still there and it is slow enough to where it does not dramatically change the temp to cause exposition.
A leak would be very small and if possible, the fire can be carried as hot as possible so as to heat the flues, flue sheets and crown sheet to expand and kill the leak. I probably could've worded that better....
It would have to be an everyday occurance with little to no maintainence for this to happen to a boiler. Yes it could happen, but the most damage is to the wheels. Mostly cause it is more work to replace a tire than a flue,
Ok, so you were the fella that helped me get onto that dirt clump at Brightside... I see myself once, and our car once! Awesome videos, 5 stars my friend.
cool I didnt know the 2472 was back nice I sure love these SP wigwags in the video I have one of them in my barn still in pieces needing resteration I plan to get it out soon and try to do so but the banner is in bad shape
cool thanks for correcting me on that part I wasnt sure at least they got saved mine i have out here on my farm is in such bad shape it will take alot of money to restore it as the UPRR destroyed it when they removed it and the banner is almost totally rusted out from being on the Texas coast area in Houston plus UP tried cutting it up when it was removed unsucessfully so they cut the bridge holding the moter and the bolts of the base and let it drop bending the hell out of it
This video is awesome, I am speechless. So good to see that beauty running again. Looks like the engineer was trying to do a burnout there in the beginning. lol.
O my gawd!!! That is Niles Canyon, California!!! I have been there!!! Last time I was there was in the year 2002!!! I have also been to Niles, Michigan lol. 5 star vid!!!
Awesome sound!

The headlight at 0:54, 2:14 & 4:34 make a very good rifle round target!
I think I would use a Barrett .50 caliber field gun to be sure to get a good boiler puncture!
Junk all the remaining steam locomotives! Junk 2472!

@Cockroach2008 Is there any point to this comment?

@AndreiTupolev Sure is! It would be nice to see this old junker being used for an artillery target.

i wonder if there was a rail greaser in that spot.

The wheel slip did occur over a switch, and there could have been grease for the points?

Yes very cool and also very hard on the engine. I wonder how many leaky water tubes they had that day.

espeeboy 2 years ago
Yes but when they slip, they suck cold air into the boiler, causing the boiler tubes to shrink, and then water leaks.
traindude666 2 years ago 2
