I feel sad for Koko too. The lady is being nice to Koko I know that but this research has been going on for so long. I think that Koko should be given more freedom. She deserves it after all these years of being watched and studied.
Yes, they can communicate with understanding. What is it like for them? More like you as you are dreaming. As you dream, you can feel pain, emotion, love, sadness, almost everything although less frontal lobe function. Animals are much more "human" than humans may wish to believe. And we are much more "animal" than we may wish to acknowledge. Thank you Donnacecena : )
For anyone who thinks Koko is intelligent (I'm not saying she isn't), do a google or you tube search for Khanzi. Dr. Sue Savage Rhumba did AMAZING things with tha Bonabo Chimpanzee. Much MUCH more than just ASL.
I believe it's somewhat an intelligence issue too, cause language isn't just being able to speak but to comprehend what you are saying.
What I mean is that there are sentences like say "One in a million" where we would instantly know it's a metaphor while chimps would think "I don't see a million" for example
Just my opinion on the subject, I am no professional in this field but I believe that's why they can't really be as good as us with talking.
@hulkmam3 they physically cant, they don't have the vocal cords we do, they huge a minuscule vocal range. parrots do have the vocal range to speak, but they don't understand what they're saying.
not conscious, yes, but now Koko uses mimicry spontaneously, without rewards. Infact, the objective of the experiment is understand the ability to communicate of Koko, not mimicry itself. bye
hum i think is fair to say there isnt much diference between human mind and other apes minds. it is obvious by her reaction that she liked the cat, comprehended what happened and that i nfuture she wouldnt see him no more..
@problem49 uh huh, and yet human babies learn how much from mimicry? including "speach"? and when they later perform actions they largely learned in this way, I don't see many people claiming human babies are not conscious in some way, from birth and later on as they age. who the hell knows what's really going on in a chimp's mind when they're signing or a baby's mind then they're first learning to speak? I don't. And neither do you. also NEENER NEENER NEENER

Mimicry is not conscious speach. The conductors of this experiment have deluded themselves with pre-conceived expectations of success.
