Araya's bass sounded SO fcking sweet back in the "Hell Awaits" days. I miss this old school sound they used to have. All the heavy bands dropped the guitars down like 2 steps and beyond for that low, heavy sound. Including these guys. All this old shit was all standard tuning back then. I prefer THIS.

this was knot standard tuning it was still a half step down and slayer still use that tuning for the majority of their new songs.

Yeah, it was back before the band started using EMG's like most metal bands seem to do now. Also, this was when Araya was still using his fingers to pick the bass, and the guitarists were using the older JCM 800's and DiMarzio pickups. I love the old 800's, esp. the 2 channel 100 watt model. The clean channel wasn't the cleanest, but for a metal band, that crunchy clean tone works well with the lead channel.

I'm a huge music fan, guitarist, and even in college majoring in music and I have to say from a musicologist standpoint, even though Slayer can write random atonal solos at times, you have to admit, they make bomb ass heavy groove rhythms, and their music's very distinguishable............
