  • I far prefer this scene between Gandalf and Saruman to the P.J. scene. Leaves far more to the imagination.

  • "Oh HOO-RAY-EEE!!"

  • one sam to rule them all

  • Huahhah, that way, witch the Black Rider walks! And when it doesen't find the Ring, that noice! Funny, really funnu. But amasing drawing skills!!!

  • I don't really care for rotoscoping, but for some reason it works perfectly for this... it is so much better than the live action version. I guess this is because it was made before the age of the emo.

  • @FretNinja I think the age of emo has more to do with music and fashion for teens in the mid 2000's to present, not movies. Lol

  • @Jakegothicsnake I disagree, protagonists of recent are often emo in that they are self pitying and emotional in an introspective way. It's as if they all have victim mentalities or something. It makes sense when you consider that movie makers are trying to appeal to people who consider themselves emo.

  • @FretNinja Well I makes sense in a way. However, to me, emo has always been more of a subcultural thing, rather than an emotion.

  • @TheTwo4OneProtocol

i still have that movie :D what ever happened to those days :/

  • 8:13 Nazgul fart

  • I do love this film, and it scared the crap out of me as a child, but its funny as hell.

"Frodo, what will you do with the one ring?"

(Cheerfully) "I'll give it to you Gandalf".

@3:29 oh god, I hate stairs.

@7:26 ooh, me legs gone dead after that horse ride.

  • Man, I think the villains/monsters in this film are almost like the undead. Especially the nine, and the orcs attacking helms deep. It's like armies of boogeymen instead of animals.

  • Cheesy as the animation may seem (and Bakshi was capable of better) in 1978 this version of LotR scared me to death - Middle Earth was truly an alien world in this film.

  • the way the characters move about, their body motion looks silly. Bad animation..

  • @spiritwolf40 I'd say it's pretty good for 1978 ...

  • @rachg01 Thats true but their movements do not seem well co-ordinated. But regardless I still love these cartoons :)

  • 7:39 Is it me, or is that shot exactly like the one in the good version?

  • @HarryBillyBobGeorge

The "good version" completely ripped it off.

  • Aruman

  • What elves? I didn't hear anyone mention elves. What, does Sam have mind reading abilities, now?

  • This is good, but way WAY too fast paced. This has some great stuff, but Jackson's adaptation was the one the books really deserved.

  • I love how the ring raithes in this adaption seem to stagger when they move, it's almost like a walking corse (or if u like, a zombie). The 1978 version I will admit is a lot more scarier than the Jackson's films and the death of Boromir is shocking to watch, especially when there is no music and he's just bleeding there waiting for death to approach.

  • @AnimorphOfCrystal I thought the wraiths were scarier in the peter jackson films. The death of boromir was more shocking in this film, but it was dramatic and sad in the Jackson films, but I like both this version and Jacksons versions

  • @twilightzoneseinfeld Would you therefore say that the remake is scarier (not just the ringraithes but anything else like Urakai or the Balrog).

  • Ugh, this seems way too fast paced. In Jackson's films, it seems like it had much better pacing.

  • @ImTheBlackJesus Not really in my opinion, but this one was more subtle and had way more dialogue, but in the Jackson films, it was much more emotional and epic.

  • Watched this when i was lil kid. Now that i see it again, i hate it and i want to punch those hobbits into their care bare faces... punch em hard. And what's with this spastic Nazgul?

  • @palasta At least they have eyes in their rider form.

  • I'm actually surprised at how good this is. I expected some lameass '70s cartoon a la scooby doo (not hating, but the animation wasn't particularly great in scooby doo). But the facial expressions and body language here are great. If I'm not mistaken it seems at times Jackson's movies followed the depiction here.

  • @loljustice31 The jackson movies are remakes

  • @twilightzoneseinfeld .... Really? I had no idea??? I thought the books were written based on the movies!! I was saying in my post that it seems at times the Jackson movies had scenes that seemed kind of based on the depiction in this version.

  • I'm 18 years old and the black riders in this movie STILL scare the living shit out of me.

  • 8:14

  • why in almost every adaptation they portray Sam as a total retard? Jackson's LOTR did him right...

  • Nice facial expressions Frodo, real mature. Its nothing really important at all, just that a wise wizard is telling you about the ring of power and other things! Who the hell made Sam a bumbling idiot, I blame them for the Frodo/Sam slash just from watching less then a minute of Sam and Frodo together in this! And he's shorter then Frodo, their both hobbits, that makes no sense what so ever! I can't believe I wanted to watch this... LOL Saruman is funny, many colors... Guess I shouldn't mock it

  • The Nazgul are better on this than Peter Jacksons. They look much more intimidating and scary. Imagine that with modern technology. EPIC.

  • "aruman....why you no pronounce your name correctly??????"

  • 9:56 Oh Hooooraaaayyyyyyyyy.

  • If that's what Sam was like in real, I would beg Gandalf not to bring him along

  • what with the staff guy at 5:00? I loled.

  • So Saruman is santas evil brother?

  • This is so horrifically cluttered

  • Sam is cute xD

  • 4:16 Saruman: "A NEW POWER IS ARISING!!!!" (sounds better when said by Christopher Lee)

  • @FullmetalpanicJT Christopher Lee is pretty much the ultimate Saruman, he has a wonderful voice

  • this is really good- i only wish the characters and their garb where as detailed as the background-easily done with CGI i'm sure

  • gandalf says aruman

  • why does the nazgul look like he is handicapped

  • Looks like Sam's got a touch of the downs

  • Oh my god Sourman is Asian the end has come

  • This sucks

  • The Hobbits are adorable...well, all of them but Sam of course :P

  • @TheBeatleKeeper Yeah if it weren't for Sam this'd be a masterpiece. Where's it stated that in the books that Sam's a fat ugly retard?

  • @GreenAshR47 Maybe Saruman captured him and was halfway through making him into an orc but he managed to escape :/

  • and im pretty sure Sam is retarded

  • Frodo is too tall...

  • 8:14 !! HAHAHAHAQHAHAHAHA THIS BURNS MY EYES OUT!

  • sams kinda scary =)

  • THAT EXPRESSION at 7:29 WOW SO FUNNY

  • dude sam sounds like "pops" from the regu;lar show or what every its called hahah

    like if its true

  • to anyone who wonders why they call Saruman "Aruman", it's because the developers thought people would confuse him with Sauron, since their names are similar.

  • I remember seeing this on video in the early 80's when i was maybe 7 or 8 & the Black Riders REALLY Freaked me out with those red eyes! Just Like the film The FOG still spooks me!!

  • 2:14 - Don't worry Sam, your face is already unnatural enough!

  • Gandalf sounds like Sir Alec Guinness

  • gandalfs crazy hand movements lead him to hit the dislike button 12 times

  • this reminds me of The Black Cauldron

  • WH~UT

  • At 3:00

    Gandalf: BLUEH!

    Sam: DOOH!!

  • does sam have mumps?

  • @8 : 15 nazgul sounds like raul duke in fear in laothin las vegas after he does a popper in the car

  • 1:17 õ.ô

  • @VirDiligo That's what we regular humans call the "what the f*ck face" when we mentally say what the fuck but express it with our face lol...

  • Why do the ring wraiths have cerebral palsy?

  • I was 7 years old when this movie came out in 1978. My father had the LOTR set of books, but it was too much reading for me when I was little so I delighted watching the movie. I've been a LOTR fan ever since.

  • 5:42 KHAAAAAAAANNNNNN!!!!!

  • 1:19 U DISGUST ME FOO

  • pause at around 9:45 to see sam's troll face

  • 3:34 Everyday I'm shufflin'.

  • Jesus christ... The nostalgia strikes me right in the heart, when I'm watching this movie.

  • where on earth did they find that guitar?

  • Jackson's version has clearly been inspired by many parts of this animation.

  • ok since when does saruman the white wear red?..... and why does Gandalf sometimes call him Aruman... his name is fuckin saruman and he dont wear red!!!

  • @brandrider12 Point one - they were trying to get at a point in the book where he goes all "Saruman of Many Colours" but that translated to red in the movie (quite fail, in my opinion) as for Aruman, they thought people might confuse Saruman with Sauron - but they did that after the recording and edited it poorly, so you get both.

  • 6:00-6:03. Frickin' hilarious!

  • Sam's voice is HILARIOUS

  • @shrikechan i know, its so retarded, its hilarious. :D. Also that Nazgul's groan/noise it makes is imo really funny as well :)

  • im not saying the toon is better than the movie , but seeing this for the first time at 29 yrs old the wraith i think is way scarier in the toon.

if id watched this as a kid, of course i wasnt born in the 70s but if id seen it back then id definitely be scared to sleep with the lights off.

  • dude my mum was 11 when this was made

  • 1:17 Frodo: "Gandalf u high or something???"

  • I saw this originally when I was 8. The ring wraith made me shit my pants.

  • This is great!

  • Sam and Saruman sound like they have downs; PJ's rendition was superb compared to this.

  • Comment removed

  • Wtf is dis , all of them looks gay and retarded espiscally sam . The movie was 100000000000000000000 times better

  • Gandofs eye are scaring me

  • Lol...their faces reminds me so fucking much of team america xD

  • Sam is REALLY ugly!

  • @minimannen12, Good news is they don't have the gay vibe in this one. Bad news is they have a retard vib instead.

  • I wonder what Rosey would think of Same after watching this XD

  • Souron = MOSES!!!

  • Saruman has the highest voice I've ever heard.

  • lol Sam-Wise is kind of annoying...I really enjoyed Sean Aston in the movies though

  • This cartoon brims with personality and innocence. I can't imagine how amazing it must have been to watch this first-hand in 1978. Bakshi... you did NOT fail. Well done, good sir.

  • @Nemeres I actually saw this in the theater. I was in second grade, believe it or not. Pretty intense, but I was amazed watching it. I'd seen "The Hobbit" animated on TV. This was definitely a departure from that.

  • @Nemeres It was amazing. I was 7 when it came out in theaters and saw it on the big screen.

  • Wraithgasm! lmfao! and seriously guys... if it weren't for this version, as well as Ted Nasmith's and Alan Lee's art, along with many, many more contributions and visual interpretations of Tolkien's works, some credited, some uncredited, Peter Jackson's trilogy would be a giant King Kong-size piece of crap.

  • i love how peter jackson integrated some of the scenes from this version into his own film :)

  • 8:13-8:21 See, that's why I love this rendition of the books! as opposed to this little feminine screech,

    /watch?v=k3VtzMxmPs0

You get a 9 second long Wraith-gasm. What could strike more terror in your heart?

  • SAM! WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?!

  • SARUMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This movie is pretty good considering its 33years old and made for no budget

  • Why did they make Frodo, Sam etc like little children? Theyre supposed to be like young adults!!

  • @landondonovanify Hobbits are naturally cheery, I guess

  • lol Sam is so fat and retarded

  • I will say this: that howl at 7:23 is fucking creepy.

  • 3:05 George Takei line

  • I am laughing so hard at the people talking crap about this movie. This movie is fucking hilarious. 0:58 is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.

  • Thank you so much for upload! I've seen it only once before and needed to watch one more time to compare with Jackson's version. I don't think this movie is bad. It's just old (33 years!).. Of course I prefer new line cinema edition, but every Tolkien's fan should watch it!

  • ah the memories this brings back! My dad read the books to me when I was in kindergarten and then I begged to rent this movie. After the intro my mom thought it was too violent and turned it off. But I woke up in the middle of the night and to sneak downstairs and watch it. The ringwraiths both terrified and intrigued me, my favorite characters (artistically wise) right after Tom Bombadil (whom Jackson woefully neglected...[all in jest]). thanks for the upload!

  • i didn't know that the nazugul were supossed to be zombies.

  • @myKyuubischild Well the nazgul are wraiths. "Ring Wraiths", get it? And a wraith in traditional folklore and mythology is bassically a type of undead being.

  • @Jakegothicsnake I believe wraith is supposed to mean something like a spirit.

  • @myKyuubischild

good point. and if you look at the history of middle earth. The Nazgul had just recently regained physical form after 3000 years of wandering around as a kind of ghost, since they lost their physical form after isildur cut the ring from Saurons hand.

  • Now look here all of you who don't like this movie. The only reason I posted this movie was purely for people's entertainment. I did not post it so arguments over how bad it is or how which version is better! If you do not like the movie, that is fine. But seriously, enough with the negative comments! If you wanna tell how you don't care for it, then message it to fan, don't leave comments here....

  • @Jakegothicsnake haha ya. I LAUGHED MY HEAD OFF THE WHOLE TIME. BECAUSE OF THAT IT IS AWESOME

  • is the only good thing about this movie the dialog and the backgrounds, I mean come on those characters are retarded, like the hobbits one look like a 4 year old: pipin and one look like an retarded dumbass: sam. Saruman or Aruman looks like santa claus and why is dress up red his name is saruman the white at least gandalf named him so, another thing about gandalf beside his ridiculous walk to saruman but look how he greets him it is a fucking hitler greet. Complain I can make a movie about it

  • Good upload mate. Brings back memories.

Watching this as a 16-17 year old after reading the books, felt a bit let down as it only get's half way through. The dodgy rotoscoping, (although probably best way to tackle some scenes) also some characters were inaccurate and/or annoying. I reckon BBC radio dramatisation from 1981 is best adaptation of LOTR in any medium.

  • @morval99 Thanks! Welcome!^_^

  • am i the only one who was totally freaked out as a child by this movie...?

  • why do the ringwraiths move like they broke their legs and arms?

  • I can't say I approve of this version of Sam... :/

  • Good God, What did they do to ya Sam!

  • wtf 99% of the movie is rotoscoping...

  • Sams entrance is epic!!

  • is it just me or does saruman look like an evil santa claus?

  • @WLibysno lol

  • @WLibysno No kidding, I would hate to end up on that guy's naughty list

  • how could anyone not think saruman is evil when orthanc looks so evil in this adaptation.

  • 8:16 well, good morning, sleepiness!

  • Very interesting...and its not as bad as some of these wankers are making it out to be

  • Why does everyone in this movie act like they're retarded?

  • @mzbrunette149 Yea they do! But Sam really takes the cake! "me go sir? me go see the elves? oh my! oh oh horray!" Lol that makes me laugh everytime:)

  • What's Gandalf trying to do to Sam at 3:00?? That would freak me out too!

  • I love Frodo's face at 1:19! He's saying, "Yuck! I don't want a dark lord! It tastes nasty" Lol!! Looks like he ate some rotten fish :/ I can't believe this cartoon was made before the wildy popular movie

  • 7:30 the black rider kinda sprained his ankle when he got off the horse...

  • HAHAHAHAHAHGAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! THIS MADE MY DAY

    OMG

    OMG

THX TO PETER JACKSON CUZ BEFORE THE MOVIES THIS CARTOON WAS A FAIL AHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'd just like to point out that the screenplay was written by one of my favorite authors (Peter S. Beagle). I've just read his account of discovering LOTR when it was still an underground sensation - "I ran the books to earth at the Carnegie Library and disappeared into my dorm room for three days."

  • I like the red coated "white" wizard! ^^

  • Frodo looks so much like Martin Freeman. He was born to play a Baggins.

  • y is the nazgul sniffing for the ring

  • Gosh the nazgul is like a shitty zombie xD

  • It's funny, but I would say it also works this way too. Maybe Bakshi saw those wraiths more like addicts and slaves, while Jackson kept their original glory.

  • I actually found the nazgûl to be a bit scarier in this film than the ones in the peter jackson version, the way they walk and how they're animated just creeps me out lol

  • @Roboprez3 Agreed! The way he limps :0

  • Why is Saruman an asain dude?

  • lol

  • Scary wraiths

  • I remember when i was little i had to have my dad come fast forward through the ringwraith part. It freaked me out so bad D:

  • Thank you so much for posting this!!!! A masterpiece, indeed :)

  • Sam is so small and wierd in this one.

  • 1:19

    \:[

  • @Pikazilla its a frodo derp

  • damn. sam is realllllllly rocking the autism facade in this version
