in short what you need to make music is love for music and from there it'll take off.free or commercial software - doesn't matter as long as you can make music with it. later on you'll pay for equipment but that doesn't match up to passion you have for music. you go download some software to make music, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll go with it. chose wisely. experiment with sounds. it may pay back in the end. take care all.
It took me a while to work it out, it's been a while since I watched these things. The song in the background is 'Helsinki' by A-Sides from his 2003 album 'Follow the groove'. It sounds way more wicked when loud.
Hey I'm looking for samples and breaks, I'm checking out the dogs on acid forum but can't find the thread you refered to, could you post a link? And if you know any other good threads for downloading samples it would be much obliged.
Also, really good job on the videos, really well made an presented, and you got all your facts right. Are you from NZ or Aus by any chance?
I think with buffer just set it low enough that you are happy that the response isn't too slow. If you start getting audible clicks then you need to increase the buffer. When you hear a buffer underrun, you'll know it. If I'm just mixing and playing back I am not concerned about realtime response so I set my buffer really huge so there is no risk of clicks and underruns. If I'm recording I turn off all the programs other than the sequencer and carefully set the buffer to a small number.
Thanks blacbeard, a useful tip. I still suffer from audio clicks on my motu 828 MK2, but it seems to be independent of my buffer memory settings. Sometimes if I reboot both my laptop and motu, change drivers from ASIO to WDM, then back again, the clicks go, but always have same (minimal) amount of progs running. Tempting to try it on a mac, just to rule out hardware timing issues.
Good point in the vid about latency. Any hints on how best to determine buffer size (e.g. based on RAM bandwidth), or do you go purely by trial and error?
Indeed. But that _particular_ image is a fake. It is a montage consisting of the RAND computer, and a few other misplaced objects.
Google images for rand computer and you will find both the real image (In color, shot at a museum) and the montage (B&W, containing additional elements and a text below it)
great tutorial. really enjoyed watching. i am a huge drum and bass head over the last 3 years and i started playing around with fl studio check out my ideos x) im a bloody starter but i hope someone enjoys my music. xD
thanks for the videos man, i've been messin around with FL studio mainly hip hop stuff. but i wanna step it up to dnb, lookin forward to eps 3, peace .
Not sure if any one still cares but I finally got back on the horse and am chugging through episode three which has been in the works for months. I have been busy....honest...I got married.
It's the Teebee remix of Saint Angel by Goldie, at least I think it is. On the sleeve it just says 99 remix, but I think I read it on the net that its Teebee. BTW I am having wireless connection problems on my computer and my computer doesn't like recording video and sound, so I have a few bugs to work through
I am working on episode 3 at the moment. I record the audio first then set pictures and video to it. Episode three will feature many more screen video grabs and useful demonstration examples than in the past ones.
Fret not, I am working on it. I'm stoked that there is an audience for my ramblings.
I will be using Voyager Synth, Highlife Sampler, and a a heap of other instruments and effects. Audacity Audio Editor will be used in some episodes also.
Of course you know that XT2 is out this month and includes new cool stuff like drumtracks, its own quality synth and effects. Best thing is: free upgrade. Halleluja.
You guys probably know all this stuff already. Please forgive me if I made mistakes, or you disagree with the technical stuff. I'll actually start showing useful techniques in the next video, hang tight. Next episode will most likely be about drumsbreaks.
Software can be obtained by Winona Ryder ?!:?

I'm about 2/3 the way through Ep.4. This one might be a bit contentious as many people will not agree with me as far as the technical info.
Spoiler: Stephen Hawking did the commentary for Episode 4.

Not that it matters, but the computer at 00:41 is a hoax. (The one from "RAND corporation")
Gameboygenius 3 years ago
It doesn't really matter, but you're also wrong. RAND made the first commercial computer, the "UNIVAC", in the 1950s. Can't use google?

My Bad, I thought you meant that RAND corporation being a computer maker was a fake. I wasn't full paying attention to the video ;)
