I think Eddie is more than just the best guitarist; he is the best non-classical musician of all time. And probably the most innovative musician of any genre.
95% of teens these days listen to the same formulaic, crappy pop over and over again. If you're one of the 5% who still listens to real music, thumb this up, then copy and paste it to at least five videos. Don't let the spirit of rock and roll die!
RIP Eddie. You gave us many years of jaw-dropping, face-melting guitar work. Take your place in a better place next to your peer, Jimi and rock the hell out of the place! Let us here it down here! You will be missed as all true GODS of rock are.
I am tired of seeing the "Easy, Medium, Hard..." thing. So gay. And where does Chuck Norris fit in? I see his name all over YouTube. He's an actor for Pete's sake. Can't anyone just give a nice comment and leave it at that?
read this.once u started there is no turni back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murdured in 1945. her body was not found untill 1947.then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if ou do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos in 30 minutes the dead girl will appear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you. well you better start to copy and paste if you want to be safe
im sorry i just love u edward in such the not gay way....always will....not too many heros these days ... u just inspired and put happy in my heart more than i deserve..thank u for being u good, bad .negative. and rad ....tight work bud ....coming from a punk rock guitar player in one of the oldest punk bands around ....just had too say it ...
hmmm. let's be honest, his playing is messy and he doesnt really connect with the music he's playing. if you wish to see a nice soulfull instrumental piece then i suggest you check out this vid of my playing at /watch?v=NIFblN5hgUs&feature=related
@SSSoM3 No one said improvised. Chances are he practiced it multiple times before recording it. I can believe he did it in one take. EVH is that good.
@SSSoM3 Good grief. Its Van Halen. He does not need to practice this shit any more than Jimi need to practice doing a Jimi Hendrix solo. It a simple underlying riff. He could have played 20 of them and one would not likely be any more or less stunning than this.
@leonovi Nonononono i used to think that too. but then i head Red House by Jimi and it blew me away. it was then i understood why he is the worlds greatest guitarists
to me slash is pretty dull, eddie is more out there with the tone and the flashy style that gets the attention but still takes good technic to master most of his solos,
@xXDarkCrow51Xx if you don't have any knowledge about the guitar, stop saying that Batio is better than anyone. speed does matter, but it's nothing if you have no technical skills in other aspects. all that Batio does is ripping the strings. that's at least boring even though it's fast.
and then listen to (for example) this solo. that's way more exotic, that's not just a connection of simple notes one after another. that's something all the guitarists want to achieve.
"this guy" has been old and dead for years..have you not ever heard of joe satriani?...steve vai?...nuno bettencourt?...john petrucci?...the list goes on ...
@ericakasatch Ummm, when you say "this guy has been dead for years," and then make a list of other players that have also been dead for years, well that just made my day! Nice work.
@NoStairwayPlease The first sample is from Guitar Hero, where the master record was used and therefore it was simple to separate the guitar from the rest of the song. Also, it may seem like it's slower, but if you play it with a backing track, it really is a tiempo.
The second tune is called "The Little Things" recorded in 1996 by Rich Wyman on his album "Fatherless Child." EVH helped a lot with the album, soloing on several songs. However, The Little Things was never released to the public.
It all goes down to taste. Some prefer one, other prefers another. But I have to say that indeed no Vai or Gilbert or whoever, in rock n roll, of course, can match EVH. I also know that there are better, faster or more soulful or more passionate. But EVH is a TOP guitarist, he's just as good as he can get, and he's pretty damn good. There's no "OMFG MY GOSHHH!!!1!!1ONE1!1!!" Stop with the childish f*cking nonsense. You like ... COBAIN? that's great. Hendrix? Great too. Just GYHOOYA.
I'm sorry but... there are plenty of more technical guitarists out there but that doesn't mean they're as good as EVH. Gilbert, Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen, it don't matter. EVH kicks all of them in the nards. Yes Slash is very soulfun and passionate, but he lacks.. well... you can't really compare him to EVH. Satriani may be as soulful and a lot more technical but, Satch is... another thing you know. Can't compare them. Is like comparing BB King to Les Paul. Just makes no sense whatsoever.
@Taikamya you say there is faster and better than EVH,but you also say it doesn't mean they are better??I'm confused. How can better and more technical can't be better? can you explain that to me...
First of all, nobody has the TONE and SOUL Eddie does playing these type of licks because - as Slash put it very well - EVH puts the BLUES into it.
Second - the Beat It solo is not just technically amazing, Ed's feel for musical TIMING is extremely sensitive. Because the rhythm track is taken away you can REALLY hear how much Eddie's playing is 'breathing' and leaving pauses - rather than just plowing ahead non-stop like less mature players.
@Rockboss1987 I never cared where He came for, all I cared is that He's Eddie Van Halen, and one of the top 10 along with the Pioneers such as Toni Iommi, Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Page.
@neoclassi Shawn Lane was a freak of nature when it came to the guitar. Look for the interview of Shawn Lane talking about Buckethead. He gives high praise to BH due to a massively looped piece of music Shawn was working with and BH did not know it was looped and was really close to reproducing it on the guitar. For Shawn to give props to BH and think he was amazing. That said a lot. I'll never compare guitarists. I love the slow single note bends from Clapton, to the extreme shreds of Shawn L
awesome solo and Eddie is a Legend but for all those saying no one to this day comes close to his playing are just silly. Ever heard of Shawn Lane his is probably the only guitarist that no one can play his stuff. Everyone plays eddie stuff but you won't find anyone doing accurate covers of shawn lane's insane technique and musical ability. RIP Shawn.
You know what your problem is i am talking history. making history i don't know how old you are but in 77 there was nobody doing what he was in sound his tone his style .I know he did not invent tapping but tell me who it is associated with.I don't listen to what you do and i don't leave recommendations .Maybe next time i can take your comment seriously if you do not tell me i have a problem first. it was you who had the problem with what i chose to write what's it called oh yeah an opinion
there's something about his vibrato and bends i can never quite put my finger on. i encourage people to check out the solo on "donut city", it's the craziest i've heard.
@satranifan that is your opinion in my opinion les paul is king .don't get me wrong if i wamt to here instrumentals i will listen to vivaldi greatness is what you enjoy listening to stanley jordan is great if you want to get laid .but if you want to rock out van halen ,steve vai ,malmsteen, and the great ralph macchio who destroyed steve vai in the film crossroads he made vai look bad i think he is still practicing for their nexr battle crossroads pt 2
@evenmix1 Blind heroworship and the misconception that popularity somehow equals quality, that's what your problem is. Check out people like Guthrie Govan, Ron Thal and Shawn Lane ... they are so far beyond anything EVH ever did (both technically and compositionally), it's not even funny....

there's something about his vibrato and bends i can never quite put my finger on. i encourage people to check out the solo on "donut city", it's the craziest i've heard.

Ironically, the best right-hand tapper is a Jazz dude - Stanley Jordan...
