  • Who is the girl dancer at the beginning.

  • 38 likes and a disgruntled '87 SCV Vet.

  • @cainanuk A few of the contras were valve-rotor horns, covered with dents and held together with electrical tape. Even the two-valve horns weren't much to look at. Amazing how they got such a great sound out of those hunks of tin.

  • I marched Phantom Regiment that summer and got to see this show live several times. It is still my favorite all time show. May not look like much compared to todays shows but it was light years ahead of its time

  • @macee1 Agreed. :-)

  • My band director marched baritone this year! AHHHHHH! I LOVE THE CADETS!

  • That corps was jaw dropping good. I believe some of those horns on the field are piston rotors. Back then, Garfield had NO money and was living day by day, but they had the Holy Name... They had those kids and they had George. Together, they EARNED the honor of being crowned world champions!!

  • @cainanuk Watching this show develop and improve over the summer was what was jaw-dropping. The difficulty for those days was just out of control.

  • BEST SHOW AND CORPS EVER

  • Simple Gifts :]]

  • I love this. My marching band is playing similar music this year, but to different drill. Go Dutch Fork High School!!! Silver Spirit Band rules the world!

  • You can see the whole show if you join DCI Fan Network, online its worth it. You can watch HOURS and years of DCI finals. Do it. I saw this show live. Awesome. Words do it no justice. It stops at the beginning and NEVER stops to the end and even the end it KEEPS on going until they leave the field in the corner. LEGENDARY performance. Thanks for posting. Nice memories. Guard watchers were in shock, they never touched the ground! Not tosses! Beautiful sound and HEART. Great show.

  • good god, does nobody on the interwebs have the ending to this show?

  • @mikespeed20082 I've been looking for some time.. can not find it.

  • That brass chord at 3:23 is my number one favorite moment in DCI ever!!!! Actually, 3:21 to the end of this is the stuff DCI is made out of to me!!!!

  • @dexm85 How is that your favorite moment? lol...

  • Does anyone have the complete video of this performance? It is my favorite performance ever.

  • @soddyboy O know I have seen one video on here - a few years back that was the complete show, including the collapse into the box and trooping off the backfield - outrageous! The sonority of the brass at 3.21 seconds thru 3.25 or so, and then the full brass ensemble hit at 3.38... that plus the perfect drum score is why they bested SCV's "Russian" that year - and that was a helluva show as well!

  • @soddyboy Anyone find the complete show?

  • Cadets owned openers in the 80's!

  • One show that needed a perfect 100.0. One of best shows ever written

  • @macee1 Drums got a perfect 20/20

  • I marched this my junior year and I still get goosebumps everytime I hear this song

  • Hey baritoneguy1, the dancer at the begining was Wesley Johnson. I believe he was an Alvin Ailey dancer.

p.s. my wife and I both marched '87. I am #4 bass and my wife is in the guard. It was awesome playing the encore performance. Always wished I could have actually watched the show live myself. ;)

  • And they played this all on the G Horn!

  • The power of the G Bugle in all it's glory at the first hit...... Incredible.

  • I saw this show live in 1987 and it was awesome! That next year I went to march with the cavaliers 1988.

  • @mpd1967 Cavi's? Nah. You should've done the Cadets. The Cadets are only THE coolest corp of that time. Both are fantastic but I woulda done Cadets if I were you.

  • Your right i always loved then in the 80's even one of my girl friends marched 1986.After that I went GREEN! I bleed green.I think west side west their best show

  • I saw this show live as well! one word AWESOME!

  • I saw this show live...... To this day, it is probaly my favorite DCI show ever. There are many other greats, but there is just something about this one, and it was way ahead of its time. THANK you for POSTING this.

  • I had 2 great friends in the drum line that year. It's great to hear drum corp perform this show. I first heard this piece in 1982 Santa Clara Vangurad. I wasn't even a teenager. It was just as moving. I still know the parts today. Garfield was incredible and SCV 2009 went back to its early days with this number. I believe Troopers in the 80's performed a number. Great performances all around.

  • does anyone know the name of the dance soloist in the beginning?

  • this is the 2009 SCV show!!!!

  • No, the 2009 SCV slop was a ripoff of this masterpiece.

  • not a slop! i liked Santa Clara this year

  • Yes! A slop!

  • Not a rip off....Vanguard played Appalachian Spring in 1983.

  • Vanguard played "Simple Gifts" in 1982 and 1983. Garfield was the first to adapt the score to an entire show.

  • Its more true to the original instrumentation of the original "Ballet for Martha", hence why thats why the show is called Ballet for Martha and not Appalachian Spring. SCV's show was powerful regardless of what this show did for DCI. Its really hard to be 'original' in DCI now anyway, so are you going to call the troopers' show from this year a ripoff too?

  • Well I suppose the cadets never readapt a show...very original this year

  • Oldie but still one of my favs. Lovin teh guard costumes:) Amazing!

  • One of my favorite parts is 2:10-2:40. The arrangement is absolutely amazing, love the presence of battery and different view of music. GREAT!!!
