goodvibrato: when used right, it can also be used to color your sound. I have been getting quite good results since I have been using the MV-8800 Master Tool Kit ; which has a multiband compressor built in. At the other hand ; when used badly, it can also be used to paint the mix brown ; it's a tool as any other; abuse it or overuse it and it can backfire. Don't use it at all and you'll miss all those advantages (needed) to be "broadcast ready 'quality'" with your productions...
Do you know where I can find this Multiband Compressor as VST (for use with another DAW) ? I'm looking for THIS precise Multiband compressor from Cubase 4 /5
yeah, as we can hear, it gets a lot better in 2:13 :D on the left you can see how it clips and hear how it gets distorted!!! in a demo you should use this tool correctly I think :D
a problem im having is that my vocals will have peeks like if a say something with a T or something and yes i have a pop filter but its still very loud and harsh on the ears... when i try to compress it the whole track is compressed... do u have any advice?
does this technique work for distorted guitar? I wanted to filter my raw guitar before I put it in the mix... I did a simple bandpass filter to get rid of some noise, then de-ess on 2,3,4 khz... is taht too much De-ess? It sounds pretty good I think but there is still some noise towards the high end. I was thinking about doing another EQ, then putting it thru a multi-band compressor, limiter, then noise gate in taht order. Is that a good technique? or should I use a single-band compressor?
If you're producing music, don't start with multi-band compression. It's something that you probably will never need unless you're a mastering engineer. It's also really easy to mess up your mix if you try it out without knowing how to use it.
Single band compression is much easier to understand. Start with that.
Compression is used for evening out the volume of the track. For example, it will make the quieter parts louder and the louder parts quieter. If done right, it will allow you to boost the overall level of the track without sacrificing too much of the dynamics. Use too much compression and the track will sound squashy.
goodvibrato is right: compression is used to play non-midi stuff (guitars/vocals/drums) etc that have widely varying volume levels not for note due to human (manual) playing. compressions smoothens out the volume.

At about the 2 minute point she talks about "bringing the threshold down and watch the activity until you find the knee of the curve"
What does she mean? How do you find it?

I don't know what you mean because MIDI is not a sound generator but rather a protocol for transmitting messages etc.
