I gotta say, this scene with Bale was probably Bale's BEST scene as Batman. Hardly any raspy vocals, and he did a nice one-liner. Only if the whole movie was like that, as well as The Dark Knight. Unfortunately most of the movie has Bale growling and hacking up phlegm with his harsh voice. Keaton did great too. I know he isn't as tall as Bale, but what I like about Keaton is A) Batman voice slightly deepened but clean so we understand him B) Doesn't show much emotions as Batman.

Forgive me for sounding crazy, but George Clooney might have been able to pull off Batman, had he been given a fair shot. "Batman and Robin" had a screenplay from hell and a director who seemed to think his job was to make the movie as gay as possible. I would have liked to see how he would have handled a "good" Batman movie (Burton's or Nolan's, IMO) but then again, neither of them casted him so maybe that's saying something in itself.

Im sorry to the bale fans, but keaton is a bit better of a Batman/bruce wayne, He has the voice, He looks intimidating in the bat suit, and it feels more natural when he talks as batman, rather than that raspy voice that bale has, I can't stand that when watching the new batman movies... Not only that, The new batman films are only stopping at 3. Which is stupid.. They need to continue the movies somehow. There is so much they could do with this world...
@Samuel24842 No because this ia Live action debate but kevin conroy and the animated series counts as a win for keaton seeing as how it was heavily based off of tim burtons movies.
@shadovex28 Honestly I've watched the film and I can say that it may be based of the success of the film but not heavily at all. Completely different continuitys and styles in my opinion. Also that doesn't count as a win for keaton that's just you trying to come up with more reasons to make him win. I was just saying the Kevin Conroy's voice acting makes him beat both for me. Though I think Christian Bales BRUCE WAYNE is the best
@Samuel24842 Well If you check for the making of the animated series they even say the animated show was based off of burtons movies. Heck Mark Hamill even said he used Nicholsons Joker to help give him direction creating his version of the joker. So you may not believe the animated series drew heavily from and took direction from the burton films, but I think I will stick with what comes out of the horses mouth. So if they say Burton/Keaton/Nicholson than thats what I will say to.
Michael Keaton; Skinny, short, had no fighting style whatsoever, made no attempt to hide his voice, and killed; NOT BATMAN.
Christian Bale: An Oscar winner, tall, physically a beast, used martial arts frequently, had an okay voice in Batman Begins regardless of the Dark Knight's silly voice, and had a TANK for a Batmobile. Oh, and he did not kill; BATMAN.
@krumov001 Sorry it took me a while to respod: Yes, I know Bale's voice in the Dark Knight was annoying, but his voice in the first was not bad. However, I will admit that Keaton's batmobile looked cooler.
And Keaton killing...the movie ws based on 40's comics in which he did that. Don't forget Bale also let Ra's Al Ghul die. I'm not trying to make a case for the killing batman here, though.
@MrImastinker I'm a big fan of Bale. Excellent actor. And in this particular case, awesome as Bruce Wayne. But as Batman, not so much. Hate the voice, and the suit just doesn't quite go with with him, specially the face. NOBODY pulled off the suit as Keaton did. And his expressions through the mask.. unbeatable..
@giancarlomc Which costume? The Batman Begins costume was fantastic, but if you are referring to the Dark Knight costume I understand what you mean. And as I said, his voice in Batman Begins wasn't bad at all. Besides, Keaton's suit was just a suit, he wasn't nearly as ripped as Bale. But his expressions were awesome, I'll give you that.
@MrImastinker Bale was just as skinny as Keaton, only Keaton was shorter. Keaton kicked and punched, Bale just danced instead of fighting.. He didn't won an oscar for batman. and his voice was horrible and funny to copy. and if he had killed the joker in the "Hit me" scene, Harvey wouldn't have turned on him, and Rachel would still be alive. His Batmobile was too big and ugly. How batman is that?
I have to say I definitely like Keaton's voice MUCH better, way easier to listen to without cringing. And the "I'm Batman" line was delivered better in Batman 1989, but I think that's a case of retarded script writers and not because of Bale.
Facts are: Keaton played the faker Batman more like the comic book, fake. Bale played the realistic Batman which is far more plausible than Keaton's batman. That's why people like it better.
@BeastMode26944 people don't like Bale better, number one Batman 89 was not fake, there were things not in the comics at that time that they took, and both played an equally good performance.. So when talk for everyone and say bale is Better, I know a whole lot of people who would disagree with you. Keaton was amazing and original way before bale... enough said.
@rvistaworkbench Actually if you watched Batman Begins...You'll realize that earlier in the movie Bruce Wayne traded coats with that same bum so the coat the bum has on is actually Bruce Wayne's coat....that's why he says nice coat....Dumbass
@INF3darkgreen you think that was funny? try this type in on youtube:"Keaton VS Bale Keaton Is The Best And Bale's A Retard 2012 edition" now that is funny!
Bale makes me laugh, I can't take him seriously and frankly ruins moments that were supposed to be taken seriously but instead with that phony voice turns it into a comedy sillier than Adam West.
Keaton will always be the superior Batman. Yes, Bale is more fit and actually fights people and for that, his portrayal is more faithful to the character. However, Keaton pulled off the look and feeling of Batman better than Bale could ever have. Keaton's face with his mask on gives off the perfect mix of intimidation, anger and anxiety. Plus, Keaton's Batman voice was effective and not annoying, like Bale. That being said, The Dark Knight is by far the best Batman movie to date. Brilliant.
bale is good as batman under the mask scary but bale is very uncomfortable as bruce wayne ,chris nolan is a great director but should cast a better batman like ryan gosling.I glad its bale last film and then hugh dancy or ryan gosling can take over as the new batman.
I saw a shot from returns where Keaton bangs two thugs heads together, but is so small, he has to look right up at them. Keaton played one character. He was the same in the suit as he was out of it.
Bale plays three characters. The animal like Batman, who approaches his enemies with stealth and toys with them. The fake playboy Bruce Wayne who helps disguise him as Batman and the actual Bruce Wayne who is still torn up about his parents.
No competition. Keaton love & Bale hate is just nostalgia.
Bale by a thousand miles. His voice is a menacing growl. Not that Keaton wasn't good but Bale's interpretation was just that much darker.
If you have any doubts about which Batman is more frightening, watch the first scene of "Ninja Assassin" where Raizo butchers a Yakuza gang and compare that to Bale's Batman and you have a pretty similar match. Both characters trained in Ninjutsu, both understood the concepts of fear, stealth, invisibility, intimidation and how to use them like a weapon.
I like keaton better because as bruce wayne you would never know he was batman based on his personality. While i can completely believe that christian bales bruce wayne is batman. Plus Keaton kills people which makes him not a pussy like Bale lol
Michael Keaton is a great actor, no one can deny that; he is simply great. And so is Christian Bale (he's actually one of the best of his generation). But if you focus on Batman, I really prefer Christian Bale's Batman. He's just terrific. He nails it, both as Bruce Wayne and as Batman. He really does an incredible job!
Michael Keaton Batman is the best. Without tim burton doing that film you wouldn't have chris nolan he was inspired by Tim Burton without him you'd still have "holy geography". Tim Burton made batman his dark visionary made him what he is today I admit he probaly could have done better but that is what batman should be like I mean did u see that thug he was scared shitless.
Guys Guys Guys....C'mon, As long we can all agree that Val K and George C Sucked as Batman then its all good. Keaton was good at his time and Bale is kickn ass at this one (lil work on the voice, but hey). And lets not forget THE best Bruce Wayne... fuckn Adam West.
I like both batman movie's Nolan and Burton. But if you had to ask me which series i prefer it's nolans. Why beacause batman never killed someone only if he need to (harvey dent) or there was no other way. Burtons batman killed the joker, killed two of his henchman in the first movie and then killed two more in batman returns. He has one rule never take a life or use a gun :p
@121Mayan Uhhh Rhas died. he pretty much let him die. how is that any different. thats pretty much having someone commit suicide and you stand right there and don't stop them. your an accomplice to suicide. since the nolan movies are based on so much realism well id bet money there is no lazarus pit
@devildavin it's not the same thing as taking a life but i'll give you that one but still at least they got the looks right keaton was 5'8 bales 6'0 200 lbs and has the right face for bruce wayne and the right persona for batman and and sure burton stuck close to the the comic with jokers wackiness but if you sit down and watch it the story pretty weak the bat suit looks like shit cake but the batmobile was pretty cool :P
Keaton did a better job of having Batman look like a demonic incarnation of fury! Just look at the face he puts on right before he kills the Joker with his grappling hook.
Bale was better at almost everything else but It is hard to compare because Bale was given much more to work with.
Keaton did a better job of having Batman look like a demonic incarnation of fury! Just look at the face he puts on right before he kills the Joker with his grappling hook.
Bale was better at almost everything else but It is hard to compare because Bale was given much more to work with.
(After Batman jumps)Thug: He (Like he even smiles at who? Batman.)
Bale (Batman pulls the guy, with a shotgun out of his car's hood with THE voice): I"M BATMAN!
Falcone would have shit his pants if he wasn't headbutted. If he was not shaking he would have screamed: HOLY SHIT! (And not even dared to smile). Plus, he was big time Mafia boss.
@alexman378 Just because the actor that played the thug gave a shitty performance doesn't mean that Bale is better than Keaton. I didn't think that Bale's execution was particularly impressive either. What you are talking about is not the performance by the actors but the creative choices of the director.
@pwnishing4life The coat was a funny reference, because when he was younger he owned it, and he wanted to get rid of it so he wouldn't be recognized because the Mafia was looking for him. The funny part was that the "hobo" told him that instead of burning it, he could take it because it was "a very nice coat".
@alexman378 Bale's sore-throated growl is silly and gets old immediately. keaton was infinitely cooler, Bale tries far too hard. The Joker laughing at him in the police interrogation room sums it up for me.
@alfiejames8 Joker would laugh even if he was tied with chains in a nuclear bomb. He would laugh at anything. In the words of Mark Hamill "It would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic. Oh, what tha heck, I'll laugh anyway. HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!". See? He's the Joker!
@alexman378 yeah thats very true. but are criminals really gonna be intimated by bales husky voice routine? seems more funny than anything. he tries hard to be intimaidating which is the mistake, as it makes you cease to be so. keaton was cool, that was more intimidating.
@alexman378 you want proof bale gets his ass kicked so fucking hard he needs help from everyone talks like a retard crashes his ugly ass batmobile even the batwing in the new trailer looke like a pile of scrap metal he falls almost to his death not even uses his gadget belt i had more respect for the joker he was the true hero of the dork knight so that make's bale great?? hahahahaha you must be joking right KEATON is the best and always will be thats a hero
@stormtroopernl If you paid close attention, you would see that he did not crash his batmobile, but he used it as a shield so that the truck that Dent was in wouldn't get hit by Joker's bazooka. Now, that's a hero for me. Also, if he doesn't use too much his gadgets, it shows that he can do fine himself, thus making him more skilled. Also, Keaton got his ass kicked by the two thugs in the beginning. Didn't he get shot and fainted for a bit? Also, Bale's cape actually does something, unlike Mike
"if he doesn't use too much his gadgets, it shows that he can do fine himself, thus making him more skilled."
Yes,
Falling from a high rise,Hitting a bunch of shit on the way down,And colliding with the ground,And failing to save the person you're falling with.Takes an insane amount of skill.
And I suppose he meant to get his ass kicked by the joker and his dogs too!
@Skeletonwitharaygun Yeah, the first time he fell it was so he could save Rachel, something that he managed, and the second time it was that dilemma: save the innocent 10-year-old or the Two Face? Simple answer. Mike did give the illusion that he was immortal, but only for a short amount of time, until they found out he wore body armor. Plus, Mike never took out about 10 thugs in 10 seconds like Bale did in Batman Begins. He landed in the center and the next thing was 10 unconscious guys.
@Mercenary78 Let's go back and see how Keaton's B-man saved, and how Bale's did. Keaton, with the first chance *BOOM*, and the guy is dead. No suspense at all. There will be a fight, Batman will throw a punch to the enemy, enemy down. Wow. The victim will get thrown off a rooftop, he doesn't even react. Bale jumped of a skyscraper and fell on a car to save a person, and he didn't even glide properly. He got the police after him, so Dent could be proven innocent. Mike was a bit "Me, me, me".
@alexman378 Ummm Micheal Keaton's cape glided first buddy. I like all batmen, from West to Clooney to Conroy, but if your going to support one over the others make sure you've seen all the movies. Keaton's Batman was the most ruthless though, He has killed more people than any of the other Batmen combined, Including one man that he simply lit on fire and drove away. Stone cold.
@MrImastinker. Just because someone wins an academy award doesn't make them a better actor. lots of great people have never been nominated. I will remember Micheal Keaton alot longer then Bale. Batman, Beetlejuice, Mr. Mom. Other then American Psycho I think Bale is forgettable.
i like Michael Keaton because i watch that movie as a kid, and his batmobile is the coolest.. I like Bale too but i don't like his voice, he sound like he has throat problems lol
How is Keaton a better Batman? Keaton as Batman walks around on the streets, uses ladders, stairs, and holds his cap out like Dracula. That's not Batman. He's not as intimidating as Bale's Batman. Bale's Batman is more allusive and stealthy, which allows him to better ambush or frighten his enemies. Keaton's not so much. Bale, as Bruce Wayne, wanted to instill fear into his enemies. The voice is just an extension of his intimidation. His voice was even modulated to get that effect.
@MrImastinker Maybe for you the voice works well thats way but I think for some people it sounds more stupid than intimidating. That being a very important part of the character, is a reason why you could say keaton is better.
@aiguy100 Well, his voice is silly at times. But... In 'Batman Begins' it had the perfect feeling of intimidation but not being too over the top. I admit, that in 'The Dark Knight' it was over the top.
@MrImastinker i don't think that that is a acting problem...but a special effect one, but hey...wtf do you know? you are 17 years old :)) How many movies did you see with Michael Keaton?
@MrImastinker yea Bale batman may be intimidating but he is stupid, HE is suppose to be the worlds greatest detective but he has Fox and Alfred pretty much figuring everything out for him since he is too dumb to do it himself. just starting off or not. the Animated movie Batman Year One was pretty much Batman Begins animated batman was smarter in that. Keaton was actually a detective and solved problems. like the Joker Toxin.
@MrImastinker Walking around on the street etc. wouldn't have been up to Keaton. That sort of thing would be up to Burton. I happen to like the cape thing anyway.
Bale's voice is over the top and not what Batman's should be. Batman is supposed to be mysterious and in control of any situation. Bale doesn't sound mysterious at all. He sounds like an asshole with roid rage who can't even control himself.
@TKDLION Again, that's just in the Dark Knight. In Batman Begins his voice in the suit is a perfect balance of menace and subdued intensity. I do admit that the voice in the second was quite irritating at times.
@MrImastinker hahahahaha he's so stealthy he fly's into a pole in a parking garage wow thats real stealthy he doesnt frighten his enemy's its the other way around he gets his ass kicked by his enemy's and even needs help from gordon to save his pethatic ass and his voice is retarded he sounds like a ten year old trying to sound scary. Keaton now thats a heroic batman kicks everyone's ass and saves the day and is way smarter.
I've been a Batman fan for as long as I can remember. I was only three years old when I watched Batman Returns on the big screen. In my opinion you can't compare Bale and Keaton, because they are portraying two different versions of Batman. Keaton is an older Batman who is a veteran to the crime fighting scene, Bale is playing a younger Batman who is just getting started. So in that respect they are both great at playing their different roles. My personal favorite version of Batman is Keaton.
@SirBraxton1989 How is Keaton's Batman a veteran of the crime fighting seen? Based on the dialogue in the 1989 movie you can clearly tell Batman is a new face in Gotham city. Besides that I don't think Keaton's Batman really hits on what Batman is supposed to be, a dark figure with a dark persona. "You killed my parents, now I'm going to kill you" That doesn't sound right coming out of Batman's mouth.
The only thing better about Bale's version is the music playing in the background (which really has nothing to do with Bale's talent). So Keaton wins.
Keaton is more evil, hunting criminals, because of the bad guy who killed his parents. that's the reason why he became BATMAN is a much better story to follow. The reason why Bale became BATMAN was because he was afraid and he wanted to lose the fear and let other criminals fear him wich failed terrible.
Calling all critics!! Check out this Two-Face fan film on my page. Is it just me or does this dude look like Christian Bale? The guy is playing Two-Face in his own fan film and looks real similar to Bale.. Kinda weird since Bale plays Batman.
@KISSarmyGuy I KNOW. I cannot stand the Christian Bale "Bat-voice". Personally, I like Keaton because he definitely had the cooler gadgets, Batmobile, and Bat-suit.
for people that don't understand the "nice coat" comment - That was Bruce Wayne's old coat that he traded to that hobo when he left Gotham to go train under Ra's al Ghul
Batman Didnt Kill In The Comic Books....SO WHAT!! Batman killin' bad guys in '89 & Returns is one of da main reasons I liked Keaton's da Best hell Keaton's Batman was BATMAN from da voice 2 da originality 2 bein known as "The World's Greatest Detective" Bale's Batman hardly portrayed any of that so what Keaton broke da #1 rule a Batman who doesnt mind killin' baddies makes The Dark Knight THAT much Darker n Tougher.
Keaton is clearly the better Batman. He's brooding, gloomy and intense in a quiet way. However Bale was an excellent young Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, a young man full of anger and out for vengeance, not knowing how to channel those emotions at first but learning how by the end of the movie. The Dark Knight got saddled with Bale as a full-time Batman and the result wasn't as spectacular. The voice was overdone but that wasn't the biggest problem. Bale was simply too cold and emotionless.

2.He crashed with his bat-bike, lying on the ground with gordon saving him.
3.He couldn't get laid with Rachel because she loved Harvey, also he couldn't save her.
4.He throws a guy from a roof breaking his legs.
5.He got his ass kicked by the joker, while he defeated his own ninjamaster.
6.He got shot by Harvey because he doesn't have a armor-chest.
7.He talks with a dick in his throat.

Not only that, The new batman films are only stopping at 3. Which is stupid.. They need to continue the movies somehow. There is so much they could do with this world...

@Samuel24842 No because this ia Live action debate but kevin conroy and the animated series counts as a win for keaton seeing as how it was heavily based off of tim burtons movies.
shadovex28 2 weeks ago in playlist Batman Movies
@shadovex28 Honestly I've watched the film and I can say that it may be based of the success of the film but not heavily at all. Completely different continuitys and styles in my opinion. Also that doesn't count as a win for keaton that's just you trying to come up with more reasons to make him win. I was just saying the Kevin Conroy's voice acting makes him beat both for me. Though I think Christian Bales BRUCE WAYNE is the best
Samuel24842 2 weeks ago 2

@MrImastinker I'm a big fan of Bale. Excellent actor. And in this particular case, awesome as Bruce Wayne. But as Batman, not so much. giancarlomc 4 days ago

Keaton's Bruce seems like a truly damaged person.
Like he's uncomfortable in his own skin.
But comfortable in his batsuit.
Somebody that suffered something traumatic in their life.
Re lives it every time he closes his eyes.
Unable to live a normal life or be close to anybody. To love anybody.
Consumed by his work.
Bale on the other hand.
His Bruce is a little bitch that wants to fight over girls and give up being batman after only a very short amount of time.

Brilliant.

Keaton (Batman): I'm Batman.
Thug: Cool, I'm Bob.
Plus, he was big time Mafia boss.
alexman378 1 month ago 20
@alexman378 Just because the actor that played the thug gave a shitty performance doesn't mean that Bale is better than Keaton. I didn't think that Bale's execution was particularly impressive either. What you are talking about is not the performance by the actors but the creative choices of the director.
TKDLION 1 month ago
@alexman378 Look at how they exited.
Keaton leaped off a building, his target scrambled over to watch him leave, and there was nothing there.
Bale commented on the quality of a hobo's coat, and flew up into the sky.
pwnishing4life 1 month ago
@pwnishing4life The coat was a funny reference, because when he was younger he owned it, and he wanted to get rid of it so he wouldn't be recognized because the Mafia was looking for him. The funny part was that the "hobo" told him that instead of burning it, he could take it because it was "a very nice coat".
alexman378 1 month ago
@alexman378 Bale's sore-throated growl is silly and gets old immediately. keaton was infinitely cooler, Bale tries far too hard. The Joker laughing at him in the police interrogation room sums it up for me.

stormtroopernl 1 month ago 5
@stormtroopernl If you paid close attention, you would see that he did not crash his batmobile, but he used it as a shield so that the truck that Dent was in wouldn't get hit by Joker's bazooka. Now, that's a hero for me. Also, if he doesn't use too much his gadgets, it shows that he can do fine himself, thus making him more skilled. Also, Keaton got his ass kicked by the two thugs in the beginning. Didn't he get shot and fainted for a bit? Also, Bale's cape actually does something, unlike Mike

Yes,

And I suppose he meant to get his ass kicked by the joker and his dogs too!
Keaton got up and kept coming after getting shot.

Skeletonwitharaygun 1 month ago
@Skeletonwitharaygun Yeah, the first time he fell it was so he could save Rachel, something that he managed, and the second time it was that dilemma: save the innocent 10-year-old or the Two Face? Simple answer. Mike did give the illusion that he was immortal, but only for a short amount of time, until they found out he wore body armor. Plus, Mike never took out about 10 thugs in 10 seconds like Bale did in Batman Begins. He landed in the center and the next thing was 10 unconscious guys.
alexman378 1 month ago 12
@alexman378 doesn't better who took out the most thugs. it is about who's the hero. and michael keaton is a hero. bale is not a hero.

MrImastinker 2 months ago 19
@MrImastinker Maybe for you the voice works well thats way but I think for some people it sounds more stupid than intimidating. That being a very important part of the character, is a reason why you could say keaton is better.
aiguy100 1 month ago
@aiguy100 Well, his voice is silly at times. But... In 'Batman Begins' it had the perfect feeling of intimidation but not being too over the top. I admit, that in 'The Dark Knight' it was over the top.

Keaton was actually a detective and solved problems. like the Joker Toxin.
devildavin 1 month ago
@MrImastinker Walking around on the street etc. wouldn't have been up to Keaton. That sort of thing would be up to Burton. I happen to like the cape thing anyway.
Bale's voice is over the top and not what Batman's should be. Batman is supposed to be mysterious and in control of any situation. Bale doesn't sound mysterious at all. He sounds like an asshole with roid rage who can't even control himself.

SirBraxton1989 2 months ago 3
@SirBraxton1989 How is Keaton's Batman a veteran of the crime fighting seen? Based on the dialogue in the 1989 movie you can clearly tell Batman is a new face in Gotham city. Besides that I don't think Keaton's Batman really hits on what Batman is supposed to be, a dark figure with a dark persona. "You killed my parents, now I'm going to kill you" That doesn't sound right coming out of Batman's mouth.
