This scene contains the best music in the opera. Well sung, but you have to hear Simionato and Tebaldi to experience something on an altogether higher plain.
la voz de la frittoli es increible, su tecnica,... jamas descoloca, pero eso hace q su color sea plano en toda la escena, la contralto es extraordinaria, me sigo quedando con la version de la scotto
That was the stage direction, not her own choosing. Perhaps you should realize the amount of control stage directors have first, sometimes against the singers' wishes and interpretations.
One of my favorite scenes in opera. The music is so haunting, and Blythe's voice matches the role PERFECTLY here. But she's so talented in her interpretations; I saw her live as the soloist in Mahler's 3rd symphony, a totally different personality. She knows full well how to get into character.
She graduated from the music school I'm going to now, and she visited yesterday and today, leading the masterclass. It was pretty much amazing to watch.
Phenomenal!! I can't believe that I was so fortunate as to have heard Stephanie Blythe sing Azucena at Covent Garden last year! She's undoubtedly my favourite mezzo soprano of this time. That chest register is unstoppable!
Stephanie Blythe's Zia Principessa is fearlessly sung. Her voice is very penetrating and sounds resonant and healthy from the great chest notes to the top. A real tour de force! Frittoli is also very touching and sings with utmost delicacy.
I have an honest question. Is her voice really that large? Or do we say, Oh yes, she has a large voice, because she sings the heavy repertoire, there is a huge separation of the registers, agility is severely lacking and she's a large woman?
Again, I'm not trying to be petty. I seriously wonder about this. The other woman's voice (to me) seems nearly as present.
Yes in fact. There are not many clips on youtube but you can find a few on iTunes. She also sings baroque coloratura contralto roles with very fast and crisp ornamentation.
yes, i can speak from personal performing experience that her voice really is quite large! and, as jaydoggy pointed out, you must listen to her baroque before judging her agility - it is quite fine!
Large? I should say so, my friend! It's one of the larget and most impressive voices I've heard at the Met!
In the first opera of thisTrittico, Il Tabarro, for example, she sings a duet with Maria Gulegina, whose voice usually sounds HUGE. Next to Blythe it sounded like an ordinary voice.
As to the presence of Frittoli's voice, two comments: 1 Barbara is a great singer and 2 this is a recording. The engineer does whatever he feels like.

the mezzo's voice is impressively big but the soprano's performance is stunning, great contrast of the two voice.

Poor Blythe, to be singing with such a mediocre singer and awful actress, Frittoli. The windmills with her arms? The upset-stomach acting? Please...

Blythes' voice is huge, full of nuances. And the timbre is reminiscent of Horne.

I've never seen this opera, but I think I might need to, the emotion is soooo powerful and what a voice from Stephanie Blythe

I think Stephanie has such a saxy androgynous sound. She has a very beautiful, unique timbre that I like to hear in operatic singers
