did you know?

this works because our brain has learned to rely on shadows to determine where in space the object is placed. Thats why this looks like its just sitting on the paper.

Wouldn't it look a little fake in real life though? If you are seeing it with your own eyes, it would be in 3D, and you could easily tell that some objects are flat on paper, while others are real.

@zackery261 good comment. Reckon it would work in real life IF you approached it from exactly the right angle, otherwise not. My art teacher told us that when he was at art college, someone in his class 3D-painted a drawing pin on a bit of paper, waxed the painting so it looked even more real, and put the paper on the teacher's chair b4 he came in. The teacher tried to brush it away b4 sitting down. I think that worked in real life b/c of the height of the angle and the object being small.

@Rev1913Rev1916 Yeah I'm sure the illusion could work in real life if it was small enough and you didn't look at it very closely. I would think that if the object rose off of the paper too much, you could tell that it's fake due to the way that the perspective wouldn't change as you looked at it from different angles.

And yes, your US English is just fine. I think they are called brass fasteners. At least that's what I call them.

Its the shadows that made it so real, u used the lamp to create the shadow for the deck of cards witch is outside the paper and thats why it looks so real. ( and the position of where Ur recording it).

Yes you are correct, you do have to set everything in the same spot so you pick up the exact shadows,
