Richard Meltzer has said eXistenZ is one of the best LSD movies he's ever seen, and Meltzer's one guy who's not easy to impress. You don't really need to take LSD to watch actually, cuz the bending of reality is already there on screen.

I never liked The Matrix - 90% visual effects and only 10 % acting. eXistenZ wasn't full of action movie but it was very inventive, creative and original. They should have made a sequel. Jude Law showed brilliant acting. Jennifer Jason Leigh was great too. This film reminds me other underrated flicks: Strange Days, Lawnmower Man, Virtuosity, The Net, FutureSport, The Time Shifters, The Cell, The Apocalypse (1997), Children of Men, The Arrival, Ultraviolet, Mimic, Galaxy Quest, Dark City...

The supporting character Pykul is male, in contrast to the usual male lead sci-fi plots, where women usually, have a part only in a titillating sub plot or as an admiring stooge. Maybe this is the reason that far more men than women are interested in this genre?

I've seen 17 of Jennifer's films and my favorite is 'Bastard out of Carolina', 2nd fav 'Deloris Claiborne'. I love how she explores various intense characters & isn't afraid to expand her range. I haven't been able to see 'Eyes of a Stranger', would love to see it here if available. Also would love to see 'The Best Little Girl in the World' again (it was her first film that I saw). I also like that she's willing to do supporting as well as staring roles at various stages in her career.
