Notice how the introduction references the ending of Videodrome. This is Interesting in that this is a spiritual sequel to Videodrome, covering the same themes, only this time applying them to games.
Is it possibble that the ability to play on these organic consoles while bein already in one created such a mess in game that there could be tens or hundreds of
in-game world, each of them is realistic? I mean, the players could lost themselves
in labyrinth of worlds, as if they couldnt wake up from a dream- I had few dreams
that i thought I woke up from, and it turned up it was another dream.
Richard Meltzer has said eXistenZ is one of the best LSD movies he's ever seen, and Meltzer's one guy who's not easy to impress. You don't really need to take LSD to watch actually, cuz the bending of reality is already there on screen.
@CinemaCinder The bending of reality is not exactly accurate. The manipulation of reality. The alteration of reality. And it's not just for movies. Our very existence, and everything in it is constantly being manipulated. For Christ's sake, look up at the goddamned sky, and see the manipulation happening right before your eyes! Our environment itself is being manipulated.
Don't believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see!
@un4g1v3n1Well, the correct term I should've used,as the movie itself used at the culmination of the story is the "distorting" of reality, which the Leigh and Law characters judge a crime against humanity, thus necessitating their final act of violence, but this act in itself is a crime against humanity, so the vicious circle of man's inhumanity against itself is not broken, but added to, changing nothing. The minute humankind set foot on earth, manipulation unfortunately became a natural trait.
This movie rates in my top ten! In no particular order They Live Waking Life The Thirteenth Floor Matrix (of course) The Prestige The Illusionist Clockwork Orange Princess Bride (I know, inconceivable) Meet John Doe (A classic that will make you laugh, cry, and get royally pissed off!) Thanks for the upload!!! I can't believe they've let it stay!
@un4g1v3n1 if u like these sub reality movies u have to see dark city, it came out the same year thirteenth floor and matrix did actually the reused the set of dark city for the matrix, its better than 13th and the could have made it into a trilogy like the matrix thats how good it was it has kiefer sutherland in it
@un4g1v3n1 im a Burroughs fan and read Naked Lunch.and seen it, I think this one is further out there, but I seen it in the movies so im gonna watch it again.
@TheRalphus666 Well, both have the common theme of not being sure what is real! Or at least that seems to be the underlying thought I have about them both.
What is reality? Is what we see reality? What we think? Or is reality subjective, and capable of being altered by substances, or virtual reality machines?
The question goes even deeper, but 500 words would never do it the justice it deserves!
Is a hallucination real? It sure the fuck is to the one having it!
ughhh! FINALLY!!!! I last seen this movie like 5 years ago and have been trying to see it ever since but I forgot the name... then I just googled 'movie about game plug in back'.. And I found it!! -- bad thing, it's 2:35am and I'm tired a fuck :(
@ultamatefrogmaster Haha, we're cool. How far have you got, so far I have seen: Flash Forward, Goosebumps, Newton: A tale of two Isaacs (not sure if it was the whole thing or not) , eXistenZ, I'm working my way through the Joan of Arcadia episodes (so fair I've seen one) The Division, The Last Casion (really good movie) FD3, State's Evidence, Psych, Conversation with the Supplicant, NCIS: LA, and of course Ginger Snaps!
@Sophie1234A High Five!!! I havent got through as much as you, I only became a die hard fan like two weeks ago :P But i've always found him wicked. I've seen Ginger Snaps (of course)State's Evidence (scared the crap out of me when he did the ...you know.)Final destination 3, The last casino, and snippets from a simple curve, green guys, my little eye (which i'm getting on dvd) johnny, joan of arcadia and ghost whisperer and this. But I stoped watchin when he died. And nobody dies better than him
@ultamatefrogmaster I still need to see the big ones like My Little Eye and A Simple Curve :( OMG me too! It scared me too, but i think that would have been the most difficult role to play and he did it brilliantly. *SPOILER ALERT* i heard there was a twist or something where he like comes back to life or isn't dead or something?!' *SPOILER FINISHED!*
I never liked The Matrix - 90% visual effects and only 10 % acting. eXistenZ wasn't full of action movie but it was very inventive, creative and original. They should have made a sequel. Jude Law showed brilliant acting. Jennifer Jason Leigh was great too. This film reminds me other underrated flicks: Strange Days, Lawnmower Man, Virtuosity, The Net, FutureSport, The Time Shifters, The Cell, The Apocalypse (1997), Children of Men, The Arrival, Ultraviolet, Mimic, Galaxy Quest, Dark City...
its a good movie, theres just no plot really for the game itself. they just enter the game and have no fucking clue what to do. thats why the ending is like wtf how do you beat it then, we don't even know if this is real or not.
This movie can almost go hand in hand with Videodrome. They're great to watch together. They're both about media controlling the flesh and they're both as bizarre as they are fascinating!
'eXisenZ' (in the movie of the same name) is the fictional extension of a video game and subscribes to out-of-body 'metaphysical' notions, similar to the themes in the Matrix, only involving the use of body parts instead of technological sci-fi machinery.
Thanx deepenhancer, 'The Lawnmower Man' is new to me and it explores the metaphysical theme as you say. Another one is 'Being John Malkovich' by Spike Jonze.
Hey, considering the twist at the end, maybe CE's terrible accent was deliberate? After all, Ian Holm's character also said that his "accent (...) was thick, [he] could hardly understand [him]self."
Music by Howard Shore - no wonder I sat here thinking this sounded similar to Lord of the Rings! Particularly 00.45-00.55, that sounded just like the opening to the Two Towers (when the camera pans over the mountains, before going back in to Gandalf and the Balrog.)
An old leg of lamb for a gun instead of the latest gleaming patriarchal fetish model? A female main protagonist? Might this be a gender bending Sci-Fi metaphysical plot instead of the usual male elitist theme? How refreshing!
No Charlesvan13, Geller, the 'female main protagonist', plays the controlling character in Cronenberg's eXistenZ. The supporting character Pykul is male, in contrast to the usual male lead sci-fi plots, where women usually, have a part only in a titillating sub plot or as an admiring stooge. Maybe this is the reason that far more men than women are interested in this genre?
Just the issue that not one female director has ever received an Oscar [and] No not issues with 'men'; most of my best friends are male but I find the patriarchal elitists are a real turn off.
you should also watch M. Butterfly from Cronenberg. Theres happening extensive gender bending; ). Wrote an housework in gender Studies about it. very good movie.
thanks check , for posting the film , i agree with someone elses comment , its far better than the matix and cronenberg is a genius and all the actors are superb in this brilliant film , thanks check

I've seen 17 of Jennifer's films and my favorite is 'Bastard out of Carolina', 2nd fav 'Deloris Claiborne'. I love how she explores various intense characters & isn't afraid to expand her range. I haven't been able to see 'Eyes of a Stranger', would love to see it here if available. Also would love to see 'The Best Little Girl in the World' again (it was her first film that I saw). I also like that she's willing to do supporting as well as staring roles at various stages in her career.
Yes, I've been a fan of Jennifer Jason Leigh ever since "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." She's an interesting actress who doesn't stick to playing standard characters, but takes on unusual and offbeat roles. Plus, she's damn sexy and cute!
