  • you should move to san jose, there a lot of vietnamese people live there

  • Vietnamese are very difficult language to learn, just a word that has Many meanings, with the pronunciation is discorrect caused much misunderstanding, a word pronounced wrong will lead to a variety of means,

-eg ban = ban, bạn= friend, bán = sale,bàn= desk or Discussion.

-look the same but their meaning is not directly related to each other

  • Actually, dau nga has no stops :) But whatever helps you pronounce it close, man.

  • Its not khong dau its dau khong just turn it around overall your pretty good at vietnamese from 1-10 i'd give you a 8

  • Thanks alot for the effort you put in to these videos!!! Really helping me out kick starting my learning!!

  • Thanks for this video! I'm sure I'll watch it many times, so I become familiar with the diacriticle marks, as opposed to the tonal marks. Thanks for explaining the difference; when I first started trying to learn some Vietnamese, I was confused - I was told there were 6 tones, yet there were so many different marks! Took me a while to realize they were diacriticle marks ;-)

Thanks for all your vidoes on this! I'm slowly watching them all.

  • lol why are you alway in ur car

  • My car is comfortable. It's quiet. There is no wind, or rain, or sun. The camera is in a good position to record. But mainly, I have a little time to talk to you while I am waiting for my wife to return from shopping.

  • Thanks for your kind comments.

  • Bravo. I like your videos.

  • u'r the best.

  • You make me laugh with those comparison. Little hat , saucer...

These marks really mixed up. They changed the meaning of the words.

  • thanks for that dude, much appreiciated, i studied vietnamese in saigon with a teacher who could speak english, your lessons are great, they really helped with brushing up my VN. Thanks again!

  • Vietnamese take the Northern accent for singing standard, I mean Hanoi accent, new generation song.

  • Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you for your kind comments. No, I'm presently living in California, USA. The last time I was in Vietnam was 1971. I would LOVE to go back sometime.

  • omg so this video is like really long time ago ? i wasn't even borned yet

  • No, the last time I was in Vietnam was 1971. I made this video in 2008. :=)

  • but you showed some vietnamese shop/store

  • Oh, I see the misunderstanding. That was a local manicure shop here in California. It seems that most all of the manicure/pedicure shops are owned and run by Vietnamese. Lucky for me, so I can practice my Vietnamese! :=)

  • You first question..when I joined the military in 1968 the USA was in Vietnam, so they wanted Americans to learn Vietnamese, so the govetrnment sent me to a language school to learn Vietnamese. Your 2nd question...get on magicmaximo's mailing list (magicmaximoDOTcom) and you'll get a lot of language learning tips.

  • i find it funny that you make videos in your car. were you bored when your wife went shopping so you took the time to make these videos or something?

  • For many reasons. It's a quiet place. I'm waiting for my wife. I can talk to a camera and not worry about people wondering who I'm talking to. :=)

  • Can the North, South, and middle dialects understand each other? And...what dialect did you learn?

  • Similar to the American accents, New York, Texas, Tennesee, etc, But prob the best answer to your question should come from the natine Vietnamese speakers. They tell me that the speakers from Hue (middle area) are hard for even native Vietnamese speakers to understand. How about it, my Vietnamese friends?

  • This is true about the middle area. I'm Vietnamese American and can understand Vietnamese but my two ex girlfriends were Hue. When I went over there houses I couldn't understand what the parents were saying. The accents were really thick and sometimes use different words. Funny thing was that when both of my ex's would speak Vietnamese to me or their friends they would have to change their accent so we can understand them.

  • Another example is when I go to the temple there would be these two guys who'd talk to me but I have no idea what they were saying. I would understand a word here and there but overall it was hard to understand. I thought that it was me becuase I do understand Vietnamese to some extent but I'm no expert. BUt my mom's friend who is totally Vietnamese also had a hard time understanding the two men.

  • To answer your second question.. My Vietnamese teachers were from the North, I lived in the South, so my Vietnamese subscribers say I have a "Northern accent.."a Southern accent, a "strange" accent, a "mixture of north and south accents" a "good pronunciation", a "bad accent", etc, etc, So I guess it all depends who I talk to. I just hope I can be understood. :=)

  • You're welcome. Khong co gi ca!

  • thankyooooou for taking the time out to teach us :)

  • Thanks for the series this is a great help

  • Thanks for your comments.
