They really are our modern composers. It may be a silly to state, but in the distant future the Beatles will be remembered, but Rush will be studied. The composition for this genre of music is unmatched, and they are still improving.
From "Working Man" to "Tom Sawyer", there was such a huge morph evolving in a relatively short period of time (1974-1980). Pretty rad if you think about it.
i cant not think about the family guy episode when chester cheetah snorts cheese curls 2 this song, and puts his hand thru the table glass, fuckin hilarious!
@twajetmech1 yeah, I agree. I could be wrong but I don't think this band would be together for as long as it has without really any notable issues (excluding NP's hiatus) if they did a lot of drugs.
@magnatrope You're kidding, Right? Trust me, I came from the late '60's and no one can perform at this level of musicianship and be on acid, weed, goofballs, speed, or any other drugs you care to name. It just can't be done. If you don't beleive me, just ask Morrison, Joplin, Hendrix, OH! wait, you can't. See what I mean................
Todays tom Sawyer is employed and is not a unionworker. The river doesn't carry him, he's independent, exit the federal governent and everyone gets high on love.
Which video contains the true audio? I would think that the you tube . com / watch?v=KNZru4JG_Uo is the real thing. This one seems to be an over-dub from some other performance. One noticeable different is at 3:19 before "catch the witness", one has a little drum roll, this one here does not.
@Interst890 Not 100% sure on this as someone else posted this was an overdub, but for the most part in a live setting, Geddy used an Oberheim OBX (or OB8a) connected with footswitches for some of the parts (like a hammond organ bass pedal or Taurus) primarily the ones with long legato notes like the beginning filter sweep. Then would play the solo (and probably pedals for bass tones) on the Moog.
rush is without a doubt one of the most amazing bands ever. i mean listen, its only 3 guys on stage playing, but it sounds like 10 people! its amazing how they can do it!
It's just mind-bogling. In the entire world of music, that after all the concerts that myself, my friends, and family. After endless discussion. OMG,, how did they do this. I recently saw an interview with Geddy Lee, and he recalled that "Tom Sawyer" was without a doubt, a nails on chalkboard (teeth grinding, hair pulling roots and all) song to get the mix and recording right. "Holy peferct achievments Batman!" These Rock Imortals seemed to have play it absolutly to perfection every time!
1983 - Driving north on a clear but snow covered day on an interstate in Maine with a cousin when we heard the ad on the radio for Rush in concert. @DTxOctavariumx Just listen to The Trees my friend... I am not about to discuss this and degrade the perfectness of the greatest trio of musicians the world has ever known.
There arent enough words to describe how i feel about this group. I will say that i have had the moving pictures album since i was six years old. I must have been their youngest fan. I havent stopped being a fan since.
@pellacan56 I have 3 main guitar's all Washburn but tuned differently of course for different song's but I get you I can just imagine how many Alex has;just remembering the guitar itself must have it's moment's.What a great musician he is though,he used to not get the praise he deserves but I think now since their induction people realize how extraordinary these gent's are.
@dhindsjr the first rush song i heard was when i was 5 in the car free will came on the radio and i remember humming it while i played with my hot wheels then i grade 5 my stepdad made me add 2112 to my mp3 player and tom sawyer so now 14 have 17 rush cd's a shirt 4 posters and geddy lee's solo album
One reason Lifeson changes guitars so much is that he has them strung and tuned differently for different songs. Don't know how he keeps it all straight. Don't care, he's awesome, as are Geddy and Neil.
looks like an ES-135 to me. Les Paul sized (more or less) thin line, single cutaway, semi-hollow. Dont get me wrong, I love Rush and Alex, but i never understood why he changes guitars so much during concerts. With all the effects he has going all the time, they all sound pretty much the same LOL.
@Armando2012102 ur right man rush deserves to be in there u got the same point of view as me and eddie trunk there genisus im 14 i love these guys they are so damn smart and talented im glad neil didt die of braincancer cuz who would ever replace his ass noone

Oh I agree. Rush is just so incredible on all fronts. Songwriting, lyrical content, musicianship and they're always pushing the boundaries of originality without losing the familar Rush sound. I mean no band on earth, let alone a trio, sounds like Rush. On top of all that each member of the band is argueably the greatest at their instrument in the world. you couldnt manufacture a band this good and they are SOOOOOO underatted. WHY? hahah
<3 I love RUSH so much.... I've listened to them since I was like 12 (I'm 18 now), starting with the local Classic Rock radio station and then collecting their albums xD
They're my second favorite band, after Pink Floyd.
Rickenbacker 4003 wired in stereo(rick-o-sound output jack) through a signal splitter d i box,one to house and one to rig. Ashley preamp, Furman Sound parametric e,q, (pq6)BGW750 w power amps to two 2x15 EV cabinets loaded with JBL's. The reason everything is in stereo is that Geddy has one setup for each side of the stage. By the way, Geddy also uses Roto Sound RS 66 lb medium light guage strings.
its amazing. neil is beast. they play this song faster live and he still keeps the beat. crazy. when i play this song on drums i get tired half way through. he is truly a god.
Actually, It's a Gibson, Howard Roberts Fusion Guitar
It's an awesome guitar and I understand hard to get your hands on. He played one (not sure if it was the same one) on the last tour 07/08 In the Snakes ad Arrows DVD, he's playing it during the song- The Way The Wind Blows
I'm 23... I listen to ALOT of RUSH.... more than alot of people who dug em back in the day and the are considered a nerdy band... to people who grew up then. All those fantasy themes kind of made them seen that way. However talent was recognized and their fan base grew. Thankfully
I'm 30 and I too listen to a lot of RUSH. I know they are still releasing albums, but I listen to them like they are a FRESH NEW BAND, with the exception that they have released 20+ records.
It's not nerdy. :P Yeah, the song "Mission" on "Hold Your Fire" may have a lot of big words, but I know a lot of people who arn't nerdy who like this band. Everyone who doesn't have are jealous, because they are a 3 man band, who knows how to play music. Unlike the crap today.....
Nerds like Rush, cool people like Rush, anyone with good taste in music likes Rush. Anyone fan of rock music who doesn't like Rush may not be a nerd but is definitely a dumbass.
on the snakes and arrows tour when he brought the Rickenbacker out for APTB he played it like his Jazz Bass, which completely changed the sound of it.
This version is so overwhelming. I love it when you can clearly hear Alex in all of his glory. In the last couple of tours his guitar seems to get lost in the noise. Louder does not necessarily equal better. Don't get me wrong this has nothing to do with his playing.
I wouldnt say thats what makes a band good. What makes a band a good liveact is that they have the musical freedom of playing the songs differently live. If its this way around, you might just put on a record with rush.....
this is the first song i ever played on drums. i remember having to practice the song alot because i couldnt(at the time) get my right hand to move that fast on hihats lol... that was 16 years ago.. i think i learn all of their albums up to that point in like a week... and i still remember them.. awesome... my momintroduced me to this music
Run DMC? First of all they are rappers, and second of all, they were only around for a few years compared to Rush who are still together. Fuck the RRHF! Politics is everything in this world so really it's not much of a dis because greatness should be it's own reward and getting awards is more for the award show and the governing bodies, not the recipients. You're a little child if you need an oscar or some hall of fame to feel good about yourself. "OMG, they really love me!!!" Puhlease!!!

LONG LIVE RUSH!

GOD DAMN THAT IS HEAVY SHIT.
Nerds like Rush, cool people like Rush, anyone with good taste in music likes Rush. Anyone fan of rock music who doesn't like Rush may not be a nerd but is definitely a dumbass.

cuz the people that listen to prog are stereotyped to be nerds

I prefer Geddy's Rickenbacker to his jazz bass, i wish he'd go back to that.
OrangeMango30 2 years ago
on the snakes and arrows tour when he brought the Rickenbacker out for APTB he played it like his Jazz Bass, which completely changed the sound of it.

Tchhhoooooooooo!!!

Why is this band associated with nerds?
RyannGenial 2 years ago
well, despite thier awesomeness, you could look at Geddy's Hair cut and clothing, but who's to say that clothing makes or breaks good music?
Suddiefats 2 years ago
i just love that rickenbacker bass sound that Geddy has going

This version is so overwhelming. I love it when you can clearly hear Alex in all of his glory. In the last couple of tours his guitar seems to get lost in the noise. Louder does not necessarily equal better. Don't get me wrong this has nothing to do with his playing.

guitar sounds awesomer (if thats even possible!!!)

One of the best things about Rush is that they sound exactly the same live and in studio.
diegoescolochog 2 years ago 6
I wouldnt say thats what makes a band good. What makes a band a good liveact is that they have the musical freedom of playing the songs differently live. If its this way around, you might just put on a record with rush.....

Couldn't agree more. Did you know the white stripes don't have a setlist, they just go out and play.

The thing that's amazing about Rush is the fact that those three guys sound like 5 - even playing live. Truly fantastic musicians.
