I agree with Hermosabigb--Dave Brubeck is a national treasure. What a gorgeous
and lush take he gives us here of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Mr. Brubeck has always had a unique way with chords, what with his large hands
and early studies with Darius Milhaud.
You can tell his sound within a couple chords. We owe so much to Dave Brubeck for so many great pieces. "The Duke" and "In Your Own Sweet Way" are two of my favorites. A musical genius
Uh, I get whooshy in my head by seeing this video. I like the tune. Headache following on the heel. Actually I am searching for a classic, reasonable doing of "Autumn in New York" with a dum brush. Where to find it?
Brubeck did a fantastic over the rainbow solo on a very old fantasy recording back in the 50's "jazz at storyville" which i can't find here on you tube and it is incredible. it was a 10" lp of the quartet. the rainbow ended with desmond at the very end. album also had tea for two, lady be good etc.
I saw this quartet last night, Dave is a national treasure. But his band is FAR below his musical/emotional level. That drummer plays WAY too loud and I really missed Paul Desmond's deft sax touch. Poor Dave Brubeck, playing with fools. Wait, good bass player, if a bit showy. The band plays as if they WISH they were backing up some NAMM hotshot jerk.
it was unreal....blew me away when he played this. something about him being sooo old and experienced playing such a simple and beautiful tune is so moving.
I would've loved to have seen the entire performance. Great song! I have to agree with milesbbrew about the audio. It may not be perfect but Brubeck still sounds great. Thanks for the posting!

Brubeck often left the root out entirely. That's part of what (sometimes) gives his chords their unique sound.
His hands were. His music is full of 10ths and 11ths. I can reach 'em, but just barely, lol.

This is great but I personally prefer Andre Previn's version.
