if I had the money I would buy her myself and restore her to her natural state sad though she took the blue ribbon and the haleys trophy away from the Q ueen mary thats docked in long beach,,,but I think the reason was the ss united states was a more modern ship of the time,,,queen mary is still the fastest amung ships of HER TIME,,,
@tdrangelsandoval1986 The plan is to develop the ship as a stationary exhibit. The cost of returning the SSUS to sailing condition would approach the price of building another Queen Mary 2.
They should make a movie about that record breaking speed run. I bet it didn't come easy. Things like that usually don't come easy. I bet the ship had to be in tip-top shape stem to stern....and throughout the entire crossing. Who could be on the S.S. United States during that speed run and not think of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria?
Hello,im from germany.Plaese save teh United States,SHE is the Last OCEAN-LINER of the World what live. She is 332m long,45m breigt and has 87.000PS. She was a Great in German we say Alte Dame. This was a Ship in World what it never more gives!!!!!
Update from facebook: The Conservancy has recently taken the first major, crucial step to securing a sustainable future for the SS United States, which is beginning a multi-month feasibility study for the vessel's use as a stationary attraction in New York City. This feasibility study would provide a short list of the best potential permanent docking spaces for the ship, as well as provide detailed projections on visitorship numbers, traffic patterns, and redevelopment and maintenance costs...
@soobocka Even the SSUS Conservany realizes that restoration to an operating vessel is not practical. That is why she is to be developed as stationary hotel, museum, and event space.
I hope she stays in Philly where she belongs and is eventually docked at Penn's landing right across from the USS New Jersey in Camden (which was built at the Old philadelphia Navy Yard) It would be the most amazing Ship museum in the world with a ferry going back and fourth to each ship. It's docked about a mile South of Penn's Landing right now.
@EastCoastDude99 She "belongs" to whomever will give her a permanent home. But since she has been in Philly since 1996, she has become a part of the landscape and will surely be missed when she is moved. (One way or the other, she can't stay where she is forever.)
@marieprewett, I didn't say keep her in South Philly forever. A move a mile North to Penn's Landing where the USS Olympia, the Moshulu, and USS Bacuna are currently ship museums and right across the river from the SS New Jersey in Camden. As I stated it would be the most amazing ship museum in the world. The idea of converting her to a floating casino has also been suggested since the city is in the process of putting casino's on the river near where she sits
Even with all the good intentions, there's not enough money in the world to save this ship. Yes, it should be saved but who has the money and manpower to restore it? I will cost many millions more than the purchase price to bring it back.
She was a masterpiece of naval architecture in her time. Her engines at the time of her lauching were the most advanced turbines in the world.Much of her superstructure was constructed of aluminum and even the piano in her lounge was built from aluminum! This ship is all that remains of the Gibbs and Cox design legacy and should be preserved.
@Fennec2828 The Conservancy is trying to make sure she is preserved. Somebody from the group recently said that there is a reason why she has survived all these years. She's not just an ocean liner - she's the greatest ever built.
@polygamous1 They're going fast. A lot of them had too much interior wood to meet 2010 SOLAS requirements. Gutting and refitting would not only be very expensive, it would remove the charm that endeared them to their regular passengers. (QE2 is a prime example.) The SSUS had no interior wood and her asbestos was removed. Her interior is a blank slate for redevelopment.
I'm not too far from the SS United States at my college in Northeast Philly - From what I understand the Conservancy is trying to make the ship fit for use as either a tourist attraction or a private space for charters/conventions/parties, etc.
@trainmaster844 Nothing is definate but you are right, the Conservancy is working to develop the ship as a museum, hotel, and event space. It may be best for her because as a museum she whould keep what makes her unique - her power plant. Queen Mary on the other hand had her power plant gutted out.
@MsjEsUsFrEaK73 Despite her worn and beat up appearance, she is in structurally good shape - a testament to her builders. A lot of people are doing the heavy lifting to ensure her preservation.
@marieprewett Good. I'm glad. She's a beatiful ship and worthy of preservation. She could be the east cost equivalent of the Queen Mary-wonderful for school groups, maritime students, hotel....the sky's the limit..Her second career.
I couldn't help viewing the sad situation of SS United States without looking at it as shorthand for the USA. Once, just after the war, America had it all to lose and it seems to have done just that. Now the worlds biggest debtor and the European influence on which it was built fast declining, we can only but summise her future.
@globaleye8 Why I contributed to her cause: "..She represents a time when America could always improve upon existing technology and make it better, faster, and more efficient. We had the talent to take the design successes and failures of the past, learn from them, and distill that knowledge into something new and special. "Made in America" meant solid engineering and durable quality. For future generations she represents ability that we once had, let drift away, but can and will reclaim."
The Conservancy needs a BIG US donor to step forward with a Wow! factor amount of cash. That will loosen the tight pockets of the billionairs who can purchase the right to put their name in front of the ship's name, sort of like "Starbucks' SS United States Hotel" or "Steve Jobs' SS United States iPhone Node" something similar.
@nveesky A billionaire did step up. He gave almost $5M to buy the ship from NCL (who was taking bids from scrappers) and to pay her mooring fees until August of 2012. I like the idea of a SSUS iPhone - "Blazing fast Blue Riband data transfer speeds!"
marieprewett It doesn't matter who brought the ship there. The Conservancy now owns the S S United States and they have to pay the 60 grand per month moorage fee's. It's only a matter of time that they will run out of money. As long as they have such high overhead. I can't see them being successful in their efforts to save the ship.
@kitt2000car They really don't have a choice. She has nowhere to go until she is towed to drydock for restoration or towed to the Alang Luxury Liner Destination Company.
@Gamerfrk100 A UNESCO listing would not help her any more than being on the National Register of Historic Places since 1999. All it does is officially designate something as noteworthy and worthy of preservation. No funding is made available. All show and no dough.
@Gamerfrk100 I see your point, but if we are going to praise the SSUS for American pride and marine engineering, then we Americans should ensure that she is preserved. Why ask the rest of the world for help with something we can and should do ourselves?
What the SS United States needs now is foreign investors since it seems that no corporation or any other with the cash in America gives a damn. Small donations is never going to save the ship or come up with the money to restore her. Is the SS United States going to be a part of the good American history going to the scrap yard??? i hope not but the future looks pretty bad right now.
@Sooksawaspakdee961 The conservancy is working with Philadelphia, New York, and Miami to develop a self-sustaining plan to preserve the ship. I agree that small donations will never cut it.
What a joke the conservancey is paying high moorage fee's. And people can't take pictures of the ship??? Unfortunatly the S S United States will probably be scrapped. The conservancey will run out of money and the ship will be siezed for non payment. That dock owner won't waste time once the monthly cheques stops rolling in.
@kitt2000car The Conservancy didn't put the ship there and they did not become the ship's owners until this year. Read what they are doing at: ssunitedstatesconservancy. org
It is no longer possible to photograph the ship in Philadelphia. She is moored at a working pier which handles international commerce where US Customs and Homeland Security agents are present. It’s illegal to photograph these agents regardless of what is in the background.
@MrAjbergers I'm glad that you were able to photograph her, but I was relating the experience of a photographer who was detained and questioned at the pier. Apparently he was there during working hours when Customs and HSA agents were present. I'm just letting people know the situation in case they decide to make a trip to Philadelphia.
