I grew up in Salt Lake City, watching John from day one, when he started playing for the Jazz.He is "Simply The Best" at the guard position. It was an honor to have watched him play during his career.John and Karl developed a playing style that had never been seen and I don't think will ever be duplicated again.Stockton to Malone,I enjoyed watching you two play basketball.I had a lot of respect for Jerry Sloan and Hot Rod Hundley,I loved to hear Hot Rod call the Jazz games. He made it fun to watch.
he kept himself at peak condition and had the discipline to study the game and his opponents. Was always unselfish to a fault plus the team management never surrounded him with enough talent, but his teams always made the playoffs. he sacrificed his body setting picks against opposing centers and forwards in almost every play. With his shooting touch, unparalleled court vision, large hands, speed, and timing, he was able to overcome his size disadvantage. The best true NBA point guard ever.
Absolutely fenominal passer, and always put his team first. I hated the jazz, and it was so much because john stockton tore people apart with his ability to pass it to anyone at will, and have them score
John Stockton always left it out on the floor and always played with heart and desire. We forget how good some players were when you haven't seen them play for awhile. He was the best at that time and so was Karl malone
John Stockton is the perfect example for all professional athletes. He did his job, fought hard and never gave up. John wasn't always the best or the biggest, but he had more heart and desire than anyone. He never complained or argued about money with the team. He understood that he was the lucky one to get to play basketball for a living. Most other athletes these days only want more money and are pissed if they don't get it.
@perfect1150 I agree with everything you said except, "John wasn't always the best or the biggest." Stockton is always the best! I can't see his record on assist and steal ever get surpassed. There are many good players. There are many great players still. There is Stockton, a category of its own.
I was at the retirement ceremony in the Delta Center with my best friend Matt. I remember it like it was yesterday. After all seats filled...they turned off the lights and Hot Rod called out, "Now for the last time ever, point guard out of Gonzaga, #12 John Stockkkkkkkkkkkkton. And then everybody stood up....and they played "Simply the best." I cried like a sissy, but never turned to look at Matt, neither did he. About 4 hours later he asked me if I cried....I said yeah....he's all, "Me too!"
@phillyphan801 Good story, dude. I would have cried too, I'm sure. This dude was an absolute warrior. But I'm pretty sure it woulda been stooooooooockton, not stockkkkkkkkkton lol
A PG who takes second to none. Embodies everything you would ever want of your dream PG, My five of all time John Stockton, MJ, Larry, Tim Duncan and the Dream...Olajuwon
great player (not dirty!he just answerd to physicall plays!!)sometimes with great moves and no look pass!even at the age of 41 he made whatever a team needed.the more i watch his games the more i find him great ! truely one of the best of all time!!!!!!
Noone can ever live up to Stockton, not Magic, not CP3 (especially CP3), not anyone.Magic had less assists, steals, points, and John averaged less turnovers so dont even compare Stockton to anybody. Stockton was "simply the best."
my point is a dude that was 6'9 played a position that had an average of 6'2-6'3 height, and on top of that he had way more turnovers than stockton ever did.Plus he wasnt a great shooter or that much of a leader because lets face it those laker teams were led by kareem. And this isnt me downgrading magic or anything,he was a phenomenal player but no ever really gives stockton his credit when its due. When i comes to pure point guards ever he has to be either 1 or 2 behind pistol
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol dont use the refs as an excuse for the jazz not beating the bulls they jus owned utah's asses but not to take away anything from stockton he was a good player jus not good enough lol
John Stockton was the definition of what Point Gaurd was supposed to be. He was the all-time assists leader, all time steals leader, and a very underrated shooter. Its too bad he never won a championship, he just happened to play in the era where Jordan got all the calls from the refs.
I miss those days of Stockton and Hornaceck... The only reason Malone got his MVP trophies was because he had Stockton... John made everyone around him look good...
Those who say that Stockton couldn't take over a game, obviously never truly saw him play. For a guard, he had a tremendous shooting percentage, meaning he didn't take bad shots. I can't remember the number of times when it was late in the game and other players just couldn't get their shots to fall, he would take over the game. He would only do it when it was absolutely necessary. He would rather let his teammates get the glory for the shot over himself. He is "SIMPLY THE BEST!!!"
stockton was one of the best outlet passers ever. he could make a wheelbarrow look like a five-time all-star. he'd find a way. he would just angle the ball so it goes of one of the edges or handles.
I wouldn't necessarily say that Chris Paul can take over a game with defense...but he is a great player with a lot of potential. I do agree that Isaiah was better overall though. Though Stockton is the best pure shooter of the three.

I know all through i school i was number 12 he was amazing to watch play not just because of his paz-az but he taught me to watch the game from the bench and realize where the other team was getting to us
no you're wrong, Isiah had normal range numbers but nothing special with 2 rings. Stockton averaged a career double-double per game. He has the most assists ever, no one even comes close, and the record for most steals in history, had 5 out of 6 of the best assists per gm seasons in NBA history and 3rd in most games played by all players.
Isiah Thomas: averaged over 20 ppg for 5-6 seasons & playoffs while averaging 10 or more assits per game plus the Pistons did not have Great Scorers (such as Malone or Dantley), just defenders and roll players. He made them better.
Isiah could score, assits and steal. Stockton was great fundamentalist but he had no one on one game, could not score while at the same assits or defend. Isiah is more complete, more versetaile and more determinant in a teams success. Isiah better player by a small margin but better indeed
Stockton scored over 15,ooo points, so where does this "he can't score" come into play? Also, Stockton was a true point gaurd, he wasn't ashoot first pass second guy like you see now even with Isiah. Stockton was the best point gaurd ever, one on one or in team ball....Isiah was overrated.
Stockton was a great PG I am not saying that he wasn`t but he was not as versetaile as Thomas. Zeke could kill you in a one on one, in assits and in steales all at the same time. Stockton could kill you in 2 things ate the same time: assits and steals but not 3 or 4 like Zeke. Stockton Third Best PG after Magic and Isiah
stock lead the league in steals. he can score but he didn't have he always had someone who can do that. as a 6'1 point gaurd his percentage is over 51% throught his career
Isiah HAD to Shoot the ball more because the Pistons where composed of Defensive-Hustle Playeres. They did not have a fast breaking Karl Malone or a Good Scorer for them so Isiah had to BOTH assist, shoot and DRIVE on to the basket.
pimpmaster, please rise above saying players are better because they won rings, that has nothing to do with who is a better player or not. Utah choked because Malone allowed bums like Rodman, Brian Williams, and Grant outplay him whereas Stockton always played exellent against whoever he played. Rings mean nothing as far as skill is concerned. Heck, Chuck Nevitt has like 5 rings and he lived at the end of the bench...
Isiah better than Stockton? You must be a football or baseball, or hockey fan because you know nothing about basketball. 1st in steals, 1st in assists, over 15k points, untouchable!
Taking on the Bulls was not enough, they should have won. Malone disappeared and the Bulls got nearly every call, even at the Delta center did the bulls get calls. The league wanted the Bulls to win those games.
There's a reason the devout Sacramento Kings fans gave him a round of applause in his last game there.
Hated Stockton, but it's a respect hate (Rockets fan). as an oldschool Rockets fan, there's no guy I wanted to take the shot LESS than John because you knew he was always gonna get it.
Without Stockton there is no Karl Malone. Much respect.
Stockton would "thread the needle"! If you play ball you know what that is. Stock did it. He saw the pass and the set-up...its not complicated, its just most teams these days can't even come close.
Stockton was also one tough little S.O.B. He'd go down in the paint on a regular basis and set picks against power forwards and centers and get knocked around pretty good.
Yeah, I'd like to know too. I'd bet that he could for sure, 100%. He's 6ft, I'm 5'9 and could dunk one-handed with part-time training, he's a full-time athlete. So yeah, I'd bet he could.
Yeah... Every player in the NBA should be able to dunk just from playing basketball all there lives. Most people I play random games at the gym can dunk so I suppose Stockton could if he had so wanted.
No actually, that's really good reasoning. I was able to dunk after just cutting weight and trying lots and lots and lots. I'm 5'9 and I got fit and could dunk one-handed. Guys that play ball full-time must be able, I mean they'RE ALWAYS WORKING OUT!
I saw an interview with Mark Eaton quite a few years ago, and the guy asked him if John could dunk. Mark said he'd seen him do it a few times but he had to get up "quite a head of steam first". If anyone doesn't get that, it means had to get a good running start to do it.
John Stockton is 6'1", he just looked small next to the towering 6'11" Karl Malone and the 7'4" Mark Eaton.
I saw an interview with former Jazz player Mark Eaton, and the guy asked him if John could dunk. Mark said he'd seen him a few times, but that he had to "get up quite a head of steam first".=P
If anyone doesn't know what that means, it means he had to get a running start at the basket.
JS is 6'1". He just looked small next to the 6'10" Karl Malone, and the 7'4" Mark Eaton.
Don't you ever compare Steve Nash to John Stockton! All-time leader in BOTH assists and steals! Nash got no fucking defense! Stockton was way overrated...if he played today when he was at the peak of his skills, Nash would'nt be the MVP. Stockton would've.
John also had better D then Nash. My personal top 3 PG's list would be Magic, Stockton, Kidd. Would include Oscar, but never saw him play. Was sadly beyond my time. :(
All you have to do is look who he had to play against. There is no more Magic, Isiah, Jordan, Akeem, Bird, Barkley, etc. He was just great against the best competion ever.
The only difference is Nash was a headless chicken in the court running around making crazy plays at will; Stockton had more court smarts and premeditated his plays. He is the master of finding the wide open man and threading the defense. He never had to be fancy to rip apart the opposition.

stock lead the league in steals. he can score but he didn't have he always had someone who can do that. as a 6'1 point gaurd his percentage is over 51% throught his career
timhoward5 3 years ago
Isiah HAD to Shoot the ball more because the Pistons where composed of Defensive-Hustle Playeres. They did not have a fast breaking Karl Malone or a Good Scorer for them so Isiah had to BOTH assist, shoot and DRIVE on to the basket.
1-MAGIC/BIG O
2-ISIAH
3-STOCKTON

good point. can agree with that statement
timhoward5 3 years ago
pimpmaster, please rise above saying players are better because they won rings, that has nothing to do with who is a better player or not.
JamesColvent 3 years ago
Isiah better than Stockton? You must be a football or baseball, or hockey fan because you know nothing about basketball. 1st in steals, 1st in assists, over 15k points, untouchable!
JamesColvent 3 years ago 2
Taking on the Bulls was not enough, they should have won. Malone disappeared and the Bulls got nearly every call, even at the Delta center did the bulls get calls. The league wanted the Bulls to win those games.

agreed!

There was no finer PG in the NBA and there will be none. Stockton, to Malone. Legend and true gentleman.

hi, do u have a video of John Stockton when he annunces his retirement?
eunicejazz98 4 years ago
He didn't announce it in a press conference or anything, in typical Stockton style it was a press release in the offseason.
neomer15 4 years ago
he did on the jazz locker room to the media, i've seen pictures on the web, and hear it too, but i would like too see a video of it.
eunicejazz98 4 years ago
Stockton would "thread the needle"! If you play ball you know what that is. Stock did it. He saw the pass and the set-up...its not complicated, its just most teams these days can't even come close.
Monkey200728 4 years ago
Stockton was also one tough little S.O.B. He'd go down in the paint on a regular basis and set picks against power forwards and centers and get knocked around pretty good.

this is how you play the point guard position!
blacknapalm 4 years ago 3
John Stockton is the all time best point guard. Steve Nash and Jason Kidd can't even compare to him.
IMMTECH12 4 years ago
Steve Nash is pretty good hes way better than Jason Kidd I think, but compared to John Stockton you cant even compare
medusajared 4 years ago
greatest at the point ever and no one will ever come close to j.s

Nash has led the league in assists three times in a row and is leading again this year so he is garbage? Stop with the Nash hatred.
hhhhdmt 4 years ago
Stockton is pretty sick, but Nash is absolute garbage - Jason Kidd at his best is better (if we're talking about current point guards).

hornymonk626 4 years ago
Yeah, I'd like to know too. I'd bet that he could for sure, 100%. He's 6ft, I'm 5'9 and could dunk one-handed with part-time training, he's a full-time athlete. So yeah, I'd bet he could.
Monkey200728 4 years ago
can stockton dunk? just curious'
rod1231 4 years ago
Yeah... Every player in the NBA should be able to dunk just from playing basketball all there lives. Most people I play random games at the gym can dunk so I suppose Stockton could if he had so wanted.
ScarletandCreme32 4 years ago
no your wrong buddy
dimsung1 4 years ago
No actually, that's really good reasoning. I was able to dunk after just cutting weight and trying lots and lots and lots. I'm 5'9 and I got fit and could dunk one-handed. Guys that play ball full-time must be able, I mean they'RE ALWAYS WORKING OUT!
Monkey200728 4 years ago
just cause you play ball all day everyday, doesn't mean you can dunk, look at nash.
xii4ever 4 years ago
I saw an interview with Mark Eaton quite a few years ago, and the guy asked him if John could dunk. Mark said he'd seen him do it a few times but he had to get up "quite a head of steam first". If anyone doesn't get that, it means had to get a good running start to do it.
John Stockton is 6'1", he just looked small next to the towering 6'11" Karl Malone and the 7'4" Mark Eaton.

Stockton is overall the best player in NBA of all time! I don't care about the dunking machines. Stockton was the brain behind it all.
brucecph 4 years ago
Don't you ever compare Steve Nash to John Stockton! All-time leader in BOTH assists and steals! Nash got no fucking defense! Stockton was way overrated...if he played today when he was at the peak of his skills, Nash would'nt be the MVP. Stockton would've.

John also had better D then Nash. My personal top 3 PG's list would be Magic, Stockton, Kidd. Would include Oscar, but never saw him play. Was sadly beyond my time. :(
theWayofstrategy 4 years ago
All you have to do is look who he had to play against. There is no more Magic, Isiah, Jordan, Akeem, Bird, Barkley, etc. He was just great against the best competion ever.

Theory Evolution
Stockton ---> Nash
Malone ---> Stoudamire
ituss1721 4 years ago
The only difference is Nash was a headless chicken in the court running around making crazy plays at will; Stockton had more court smarts and premeditated his plays. He is the master of finding the wide open man and threading the defense. He never had to be fancy to rip apart the opposition.
