This music is timeless, and I can't thank enough my father who got me into Rush... I've being a fan for good 10 years or so. Lakeside Park, willows in the breeze Lakeside Park so many memories, laughing rides, midway lights, shinning stars on summer nights. I looked in the mirror today, my eyes just didn't seem so bright. I lost a few more hairs, I think I'm going bald. Thirty years ago how the words would flow with passion and precision, now his mind is dark and dull with sickness and indecision...
2 dislikes..............really, my guess is the reality of this song was too deep for them to acknowledge so they voted to dislike it..............incredible. Musically & lyrically this is Rush's greatest song IMHO, with a little help on the violin.
It's interesting that Alex doesn't take a guitar solo (obviously due to the violinist). Other than obscure songlets ("Didacts and Narpets", etc) I don't think there are any other examples. I'd love to see them bring in Ben Mink for some televised special, some live aid thing or whatever the case may be, just to perform this song.
I played this song for my sister, who was a dancer as a young woman, and accidentally made her weep. I felt like an ass. But yeah, never a dry eye. What a stunning piece of music this is.
@JonnyMr3330 I am a Rush fan and a Beatle fan and find you can't really compare these bands. On one hand with Rush their is one genius drummer who wrote the lyrics and gives the music writing to the other 2 (equally skilled musicians). On the other hand with the Beatles, you had 3 lyrics and amazingly talented music writer along with an average but efficient drummer. But above all even before being a musical one, the Beatles are a historical and sociological phenomenal.
@SciMasterGeneral are you fucking kidding me??? im a drummer and can only do 5-6 Rush songs and i can play almost EVERY AC/DC song. the drummer for AC/DC plays a simple beat in EVERY SINGLE FUCKING SONG
Rush is Rush and will always be... don´t fight you guys just enjoy the music that´s all you got to do!!! try to love music because is a way to talk in universal language and all you need is an open mind and heart!!! I´ve been listening rush almost since I was born and I really like their music...
"30 years ago how the words would flow with passion and precision, but now his mind is dark and dull by sickness and indecision, and he stares out the kitchen door where the sun will rise no more". I ball my eyes out at that lyric because it reminds me of my late Uncle Jim Mancini who was a brilliant scientist for NASA in the '60's. He managed the the Atlas Standard Launch Vehicle 3 Centaur (SLV3C) program. He lost his mind from Alzheimer's and couldn't remember his own name before he died. :-(
36 yrs now i am. this song was tough to interpretate as a 10 yr old without the guidance of older rush fans. Signals is like an '82 Pinot Noir~ dark with sick highlights. geniuseseses they is in toronto great post. thank you. guitar solo is truly remarkable.
Really? How can people say this album sucked. It's great. This is my least favorite song on the album, but the rest of it is amazing. Subdivisions? Chemistry...and come on, Analog Kid, Digital Man and New World Man? Hell, with most other bands we'd have to put together four records to get that much greatness, and with Signals, it's right in your face.
If you want to agree that the songs are great, but the production sucks, I'll give you that. If you're dissapointed that they went of on a keyboard based tangent for the next 10 years, then, yeah, I get it. I just don't share the same sentiment. I certainly don't think Signals had a negative affect on their careers. If you recall, Caress of Steel almost ruined them. But I LOVE that record. And, yes, I like Vapor Trails, too. It was produced like crap, too, though, unfortunately.
I teach high school, I'm 49 and I play this each semester for my students. I give them the lyrics on paper. I hope that they will grasp the concept that we have much to do and little time. That we can achieve much, but we must work now. That we will realize starkly that we must pass the baton...
ACDC ? Compared to Rush ? You have GOT to be joking me ? The band that plays the same ol Shit over and over and don't know what it means to actually come up with something new .The band that if you buy just a single album -any album - It is the entire repository of they're musical ability . Skill and lyrics. Pick an LP you never need to buy another one.The band that has no CLUE what / Or How to create an Epic song is.They are an ant standing up next to the Sun. If I wasn't such a coward I'd get in my car on a long stretch of highway and crank this thing all the way up. At about the 2:50 point I'd start gradually stepping down on the gas and I wouldn't let off of it 'til about 3:57. R-U-S-H!!!!!
Those words, over such an uplifting breakdown...heart-breaking beauty. The electric violin in this song is also incredible. At 25, as someone who struggles to make it as an artist, very few songs have lyrics more prescient and meaningful as this...Wonderful

I was there when it came out. I was in college daze...saw them live that year too.............I played the grooves out of the record on this song. Subdivisions was a favorite ,as was the whole album, but this song always got me closer to the heart :)
well, it's been a week and i can say that this song is like a ripple wave that has mutiple planes of soundscape frequency and new impressions everytime.... classic~
Beautiful song by an amazing band! Everytime I listen to this album it takes me back to high school. Lot's of good memories. "most of us just dream about the thing's we'd like to be " Got my tix to see Rush in Boston in September 2010!!!!
Approaching thirty years since this album and the music is as surreal and moving today as when I heard it brand new all those years ago... These guys have truly been a gift that I wouldn't exchange for any other, of any genre, for anything.
when i saw rush on this tour, a band called "FM" opened for them . and then the electric mandalin player joined rush for this song its amazing, he played an extended solo its sounded like a violin
One of the best songs this album has. A tried and true Rush fan to say the least. Aside from my own sentiments, some of the previous statements about Peart's songwriting ability (for this song alone) are absolutely concise and true. Kudos to those who hail Rush and a singularly great songwriting and inspirational group.
My God, listen to this song on mushrooms. I started crying at about 2:10 and it just made think of every mean or mean thing that has happened to me. Horrible it was. But then again, great experience.
Listen to "Armour and sword" off the "Snakes and Arrows" album, if you think Rush have lost their creative drive, read Pearts lyrics in this soulful, mind provoking track.
They are truley, the most inspiring, rock - musical collaberation I have ever had the chance to see. Ps hope they come to the Uk, with the " Time Machine" tour.
There is no better band.....and noone can make that argument! An amazing song that, sadly, has never been played live. I am looking forward to seeing Rush this summer and am always hopeful this song might be played.
earthshine said it best, musically there is not a better band than Rush, all three continue to push themselves to be better even after all these years, and they care about the music, somethin today's bands have seem to lost sight of, the music itself, most just are in it for the money
I hope you have come across Steve Morse's Dregs ('Dixie' Dregs). The violin playing from Allen Sloan, Mark O'Connor and Jerry Goodman will leave you in complete ecstacy.
What hits me so much is how Peart wrote this when he could have hardly been 30. For someone of that age the sentiments expressed here are truly profound. Earthshine is right - they really have no peer.
@damidob I thinks actually that's why Rush was so great in the 1970s and 80s: The peak of creative power is between ages 20-35. It's between these ages that artists--Directors, Musicians, Painters--create their masterpieces. Older than this, you simplify things, and become less risky, more conservative in your artistry. That is why there is Two Rush's: The Old Rush, and New Rush. So, no, it doesn't surprise me Peart wrote this at age 30.
Before anybody gets confused, this is a song abut losing your ability to create. It's generally about aging, so, you, and your youth and creative ability are damned by this song. So, deal with it, ass holes.
Before any 'metal bands' were penning their 'power ballads', Rush gave us this. Another example of how Rush was light years ahead of any of their 'contemporaries' and all that were to follow. They may not have had the cultural impact of the great 'classic' rock bands, but musically, they have no peer. The perfect blend of composition and musical virtuosity. You just can't make the argument that there is a better band; period.
@earthshine2k thats bullshit many metal bands had power ballads around this time and before this time, bands like Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Deep purple.
@earthshine2k Before any 'metal bands' were penning their 'power ballads' WTF Why is metal bands in qoutations? The bands to which you refer are either metal bands, or they are not . You pseudo-intellectual jack-ass. And while I love this song, Signals was a hideous and tragic mistep in RUSH's career, a huge step backwards in fact. There are a couple of bands that in alot of ways are even better than RUSH! Zeppelin, Van Halen, Queen, Journey, AC DC
@SciMasterGeneral i wouldn't even consider myself a PSEUDO intellectual, but thanks for the compliment. I disagree with your assessment of the album. Just because you don't like it, doesn't make it a 'hideous and tragic mistep'. It was badly produced, though. When they made 5150, did you think it was a tragic mistep for VH? Queen and Zeppelin were revolutionary, yes. But Journey, and AC DC???? Really. We're all entitled to our opinion, and you've stated yours. It's lame.
@earthshine2k You are ridiculous! Journey Captured is probably the greatest live album of all time, have you ever listened to it? Rush couldn't play tight and soulful like that if you held a gun to their head. And ACDC! They have sold over 200 million albums! Back in Black is the second best selling album of all time, 45 million copies! That's as much as RUSH have sold their entire career. As much as I love 2112, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, there not as good as Back In Black!
@SciMasterGeneral you, obviously, don't know a damn thing about music. Journey is a great band, but which incarnation? AC DC is a very popular band because you can play their music at parties, but, musically, not even in the same room w/ Rush. By the way, your analysis of Rush's 'mistep' with Signals is short sighted. If you look at them that way, you could easily say their 'mistep' began w/ side 2 of Moving Pictures, which, compositionally is closer to Signals than side 1 of MP. Moron.
@humbledrumah i love side 2 of mp. i can quote the words by heart. I would say though, that the words to 'Beneath, Between, and Behind' are Peart's most applicable words for today. He wrote that 35 years ago. Visionaries, indeed.
... the guns replace the plow; facades are tarnished now; the principles have been betrayed; though the dream's gone stale; still let hope prevail; history's debt won't be repaid.
@earthshine2k You are talking to someone who knows this music intimately. I've been listening to RUSH steadily since 1977! How am I a moron you dick? SIGNALS was the biggest catastrpohy in rock! Yes, Moving Pictures did have hints of the geekness which would later manifest itself. Moving Pictures is an infinitely better sounding recording! Earthshine? WTF? And yes, Witch Hunt's lyrics rule.
@SciMasterGeneral Terry Brown didn't know how to record and / or mix keyboards, so, sonically, Signals doesn't hold up. I don't think Signals is better than MP, but I don't discount it as some terrible musical error, either. I'd say Kilroy Was Here by Styx is the biggest catastrophy in the history of popular rock music. Or, maybe Music from 'The Elder' by KISS. You know the music intimately, but I don't. You're not a moron, but I'm a dick. I can see that logic. You know it all.
@earthshine2k You are absolutely correct, but you are also wrong. I don't know if you lived through it. By the time Kilroy came out, Styx was already irrelevant, the same with Kiss by the time the Elder came out. Dynasty and Unmasked had taken care of that. RUSH were at the pinnacle of their success when they unloaded SIGNALS on us. I remember being fourteen and putting that thing on the turn table and being disappointed as hell! I am a huge RUSH fan and still love most of the songs on Signals.
@SciMasterGeneral Are you fucking out of your mind? Rush is third, only behind the Beatles and Stones for the most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band. I love AC/DC, hell, they were my first concert. But if they tried to play even the simplest Rush song their heads would implode. As a guitar player (and NOT a very good one) I can play every AC/DC song note for note with very little time or effort. It would take me a year to learn to play Hemispheres, MAYBE..
@bohs1984 PS... JOURNEY blows cocks. The ONLY reason any guy should EVER have a Journey CD is to get into a girls pants. Now, if you have some PRE-Steve Perry Journey, well then that is a little different.
@bohs1984 Rush are third on that list only because they have so many fucking albums, but RUSH has only sold on fifth the amount of records that AC DC has. What you are not getting is that RUSH couldn't play ACDC either. The amount of feel and groove you have to have to execute ACDC "simple" music is staggering! Neil is one of my favorite drummers, but he couldn't lay down a groove like Phil Rudd if his life depended on it! You couldn't deliver ACDC tunes with the attitude it needs, b 4 real!
@SciMasterGeneral you out of your mind man, seriously, i think Rush we're making music because they just loved to do it, and i think the same of AC/DC, but i believe, the last ones, they are not as musically talented as the guys from Rush are.
@SciMasterGeneral for real man? thats one of the most ridiculous things ive heard. ACDC cannot come close to Rush. and what do you mean by staggering ammounts of groove? every song is in 4/4 man. rush could play that shit in their sleep
@gumbalooza Are you for real. No one can play that simple ass music like ACDC. RUSH couldn't do it in a million years. 4/4 is the very definition of groove. RUSH is my favorite band of all time, but they couldn't play with the energy required. Phil Rudd is one of the greatest drummers of all time. Just watch Back in Black live at Largo. Neil Peart is a stiff boob in comparison.
@SciMasterGeneral "the very definition of groove"...whatever man. if your into repetition and old guys in school boy outfits, fine... then ACDC kicks ass. but dont go onto a rush vid and start talkin shit about them being musicaly beyond rush. they are not. its not an opinion, its a fact. fuckn go get drunk with your frat and air guitar some thunderstruck. ill be listening to some real music
@SciMasterGeneral " Rush couldn't do it in a million years" Are you crazy? Have you even listened to their music? As complex as they are Rush has shown they can play simple parts as well. it's all over Signals ..and a lot of 80's stuff. You say Rush is your favorite band of all time??? That's great to hear but you contradict that statement by saying they couldn't do it in a million years. And btw you cannot compare AC/DC to Rush anyway. It's apples and oranges. Who are you to say they can't??
@SciMasterGeneral ACDC is simply the best music to listen to, if you're wasted. If you have half a mind, you realize, all their shit sounds the same....over and over and over again. While Rush isn't my favorite, they really write some original and well thought out tunes. Unlike ACDC who is every music company marketers dream...same shit that sells, different day...
@bohs1984 Update 2nd behind stones. AND way beyond them. I have been a RUSH fan from the first time in '77. F the rest. Long and before most and most follow them/
WHERE is the ROCK & ROLL HALL of SMAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way At 50 years old I got The Starman & 2112 on my right shoulder. Tired of Waiting..........
This music is timeless, and I can't thank enough my father who got me into Rush... I've being a fan for good 10 years or so. One of the best songs this album has. A tried and true Rush fan to say the least. Aside from my own sentiments, some of the previous statements about Peart's songwriting ability (for this song alone) are absolutely concise and true. Kudos to those who hail Rush and a singularly great songwriting and inspirational group.

earthshine said it best, musically there is not a better band than Rush, all three continue to push themselves to be better even after all these years, and they care about the music, somethin today's bands have seem to lost sight of, the music itself, most just are in it for the money

Just noting your comment on violins.
I hope you have come across Steve Morse's Dregs ('Dixie' Dregs). The violin playing from Allen Sloan, Mark O'Connor and Jerry Goodman will leave you in complete ecstacy.

MikeMoneyMiami 2 years ago
This is a thing of artistic beauty.
What hits me so much is how Peart wrote this when he could have hardly been 30. For someone of that age the sentiments expressed here are truly profound. Earthshine is right - they really have no peer.
damidob 2 years ago 33
@damidob I thinks actually that's why Rush was so great in the 1970s and 80s: The peak of creative power is between ages 20-35. It's between these ages that artists--Directors, Musicians, Painters--create their masterpieces. Older than this, you simplify things, and become less risky, more conservative in your artistry. That is why there is Two Rush's: The Old Rush, and New Rush. So, no, it doesn't surprise me Peart wrote this at age 30.
Markcip1 1 year ago
@damidob Incidentally, this is one of Geddy's rare lyrical masterpieces. Still the sentiment applies.

You just can't make the argument that there is a better band; period.
earthshine2k 2 years ago 31
@earthshine2k thats an argument as solid as any Rush song
lyticityl 1 year ago
@earthshine2k thats bullshit many metal bands had power ballads around this time and before this time, bands like Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Deep purple.
CrushJehovah 1 year ago
@earthshine2k Before any 'metal bands' were penning their 'power ballads' WTF Why is metal bands in qoutations? The bands to which you refer are either metal bands, or they are not . You pseudo-intellectual jack-ass. And while I love this song, Signals was a hideous and tragic mistep in RUSH's career, a huge step backwards in fact. There are a couple of bands that in alot of ways are even better than RUSH! Zeppelin, Van Halen, Queen, Journey, AC DC
SciMasterGeneral 1 year ago
@SciMasterGeneral i wouldn't even consider myself a PSEUDO intellectual, but thanks for the compliment. I disagree with your assessment of the album. Just because you don't like it, doesn't make it a 'hideous and tragic mistep'. It was badly produced, though. When they made 5150, did you think it was a tragic mistep for VH? Queen and Zeppelin were revolutionary, yes. But Journey, and AC DC???? Really. We're all entitled to our opinion, and you've stated yours. It's lame.
earthshine2k 1 year ago
@earthshine2k You are ridiculous! Journey Captured is probably the greatest live album of all time, have you ever listened to it? Rush couldn't play tight and soulful like that if you held a gun to their head. And ACDC! They have sold over 200 million albums! Back in Black is the second best selling album of all time, 45 million copies! That's as much as RUSH have sold their entire career. As much as I love 2112, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, there not as good as Back In Black!
SciMasterGeneral 1 year ago
@SciMasterGeneral you, obviously, don't know a damn thing about music. Journey is a great band, but which incarnation? AC DC is a very popular band because you can play their music at parties, but, musically, not even in the same room w/ Rush. By the way, your analysis of Rush's 'mistep' with Signals is short sighted. If you look at them that way, you could easily say their 'mistep' began w/ side 2 of Moving Pictures, which, compositionally is closer to Signals than side 1 of MP. Moron.
earthshine2k 1 year ago
@earthshine2k side 2 of MP is epic. read the words to Witch Hunt. it applies today. sad but true... visionaries.
humbledrumah 1 year ago
@humbledrumah i love side 2 of mp. i can quote the words by heart. I would say though, that the words to 'Beneath, Between, and Behind' are Peart's most applicable words for today. He wrote that 35 years ago. Visionaries, indeed.
... the guns replace the plow; facades are tarnished now; the principles have been betrayed; though the dream's gone stale; still let hope prevail; history's debt won't be repaid.
earthshine2k 1 year ago
@earthshine2k You are talking to someone who knows this music intimately. I've been listening to RUSH steadily since 1977! How am I a moron you dick? SIGNALS was the biggest catastrpohy in rock! Yes, Moving Pictures did have hints of the geekness which would later manifest itself. Moving Pictures is an infinitely better sounding recording! Earthshine? WTF? And yes, Witch Hunt's lyrics rule.
SciMasterGeneral 1 year ago
@SciMasterGeneral Terry Brown didn't know how to record and / or mix keyboards, so, sonically, Signals doesn't hold up. I don't think Signals is better than MP, but I don't discount it as some terrible musical error, either. I'd say Kilroy Was Here by Styx is the biggest catastrophy in the history of popular rock music. Or, maybe Music from 'The Elder' by KISS. You know the music intimately, but I don't. You're not a moron, but I'm a dick. I can see that logic. You know it all.
earthshine2k 1 year ago
@earthshine2k You are absolutely correct, but you are also wrong. I don't know if you lived through it. By the time Kilroy came out, Styx was already irrelevant, the same with Kiss by the time the Elder came out. Dynasty and Unmasked had taken care of that. RUSH were at the pinnacle of their success when they unloaded SIGNALS on us. I remember being fourteen and putting that thing on the turn table and being disappointed as hell! I am a huge RUSH fan and still love most of the songs on Signals.
SciMasterGeneral 1 year ago

Now, if you have some PRE-Steve Perry Journey, well then that is a little different.
bohs1984 1 year ago
@bohs1984 are you kidding, pre-Steve Perry Journey is some of the lamest shit I've ever heard
EnergizerBunny804 8 months ago
@bohs1984 Rush are third on that list only because they have so many fucking albums, but RUSH has only sold on fifth the amount of records that AC DC has. What you are not getting is that RUSH couldn't play ACDC either. The amount of feel and groove you have to have to execute ACDC "simple" music is staggering! Neil is one of my favorite drummers, but he couldn't lay down a groove like Phil Rudd if his life depended on it! You couldn't deliver ACDC tunes with the attitude it needs, b 4 real!
SciMasterGeneral 1 year ago
@SciMasterGeneral you out of your mind man, seriously, i think Rush we're making music because they just loved to do it, and i think the same of AC/DC, but i believe, the last ones, they are not as musically talented as the guys from Rush are.
EnCoReHu 1 year ago
@SciMasterGeneral for real man? thats one of the most ridiculous things ive heard. ACDC cannot come close to Rush. and what do you mean by staggering ammounts of groove? every song is in 4/4 man. rush could play that shit in their sleep
gumbalooza 1 year ago 2
@gumbalooza Are you for real. No one can play that simple ass music like ACDC. RUSH couldn't do it in a million years. 4/4 is the very definition of groove. RUSH is my favorite band of all time, but they couldn't play with the energy required. Phil Rudd is one of the greatest drummers of all time. Just watch Back in Black live at Largo. Neil Peart is a stiff boob in comparison.
SciMasterGeneral 1 year ago
@SciMasterGeneral That gotta be the most ridiculous comment I ever seen on you tube!

Who are you to say they can't??
vinnykster 1 year ago
@SciMasterGeneral ACDC is simply the best music to listen to, if you're wasted. If you have half a mind, you realize, all their shit sounds the same....over and over and over again. While Rush isn't my favorite, they really write some original and well thought out tunes. Unlike ACDC who is every music company marketers dream...same shit that sells, different day...
