I know, I agree with you, Mr Slithering. There are a few songs on the record where they seem to willfully sabotage the emotional power of a song. Perhaps, in their view, to save it from a kind of generic, immediate, radio catchiness. I'm disappointed, for instance, with the funal version of Nude. I've heard versions, ten years older, that were far more affecting.
Why Radiohead didn't record Phil's drums in the robust, powerful way they sound on this live version, I'll never know. And why they added the extra section immediately after "weird fishes" on the LP, when the old transition her use to be so much more powerful? I'll never understand. They took a song with A+ potential in the studio, sapped it of it's urgency, and came out with a B recording...frustrating :(
Last night I downloaded the songs from their site and paid US$6... Great that MOST of that money goes directly to them and not to the the record company, as it happens with CDs.
also radiohead songs change all the time, so you've no idea what version will be on the album. I think Johnny would not have wasted his days of work writing out the scores that the orchestra used. Like spinning plates went through many stages, and it is always played live using a piano not a synthesiser like on the record.
It could have quite easily have changed, radiohead change their lyrics all the time, theres only a small handful of radiohead songs where every lyric points to the same meaning, optimistic is one I think. It could have started off we're fishes and changed, who knows, they both sound so similar, and radiohead make songs mainly for the sound, not the lyrics.
well thats my opinion anyway if you wanted it or not.

Now that it's been proven to be "weird fishes", like we've been telling all of you for 6 months, please wipe the pie off your face, put your tail between your legs, shut the FUCK up about stuff you are too unintelligent to deduce, and ask yourself why you're so inaccurate and wrong about stuff all the time. People like you are why we're in Iraq, you overconfident, unintelligent fucks.
This is by far my favorite of the new tracks. And from what I've heard of the recorded studio snippet they put on the website, this will be my new favorite radiohead track.
Comalilies, I think it's close...the Ether Version is intended to bring to the forefront just how disparate the melodies are in the piece, doubling their beauty. Yet, Phil's drumming in this version makes the song so propulsive, as to appreciate the "weird fishes" break more, and makes the outro fucking explosive. So close.
What's with this new rumor on all the Spin and NME sites that on the song "4 Minute Warning" studio version is going to feature guest vocals by American country-bluegrass star Gillian Welch?...must be coming out of New York's media market since the album is being mastered there?
p.s.- to be honest i didn't know much about her but the rumor made me listen to some of her stuff...in retrospect, I can hear how it's really an appalachian hymnal structure i.e. Allison Kraus' "Scarlet Tide.
yeah, they're all wrong, even AtEase and greenplastic.
it's definitely "weird fishes".
you can make a thread on the message board either at AtEase or greenplastic and ask, if you really need some sort of proof, heh. prepare to be yelled at and called a n00b though
it's 'little fishes'. he doesn't pronounce vowels. and i hope very much, that they don't record this song with this drum beat, or any drums at all for that matter.
the lyric was scrolling across one of scrapbook pages on the official site (i don't know if it's still there). except it was misspelled (how very Thom Yorke)..."wierd fishees", if i remember correctly.
just a side note, i'm not being a stubborn asshat for no reason, i'm always open to discussion, but here there's nothing to discuss. i don't just think it's "weird fishes", i KNOW it's "weird fishes". ok i'm done.
everything about this is great. except for eds backing vocals are a little flat. he has a great voice but somtimes he just doesnt sing in tune with thom...
This song sounds so beautiful - the twin guitars are like harps, eds backing works nicely, thoms voice is, as ususal, great, it has wonderful momentum, and it just has the soul, and pathos you expect from a good radiohead song. Its very urgent and open. Lovely.
For something just as raw and wonderful, look up the clip of Thom on the 'Henry Rollins show' performing an acoustic version of 'clock' - its better than the album version, and a real stand out!!
And EVERYONE needs to check out Ether Festival 2005 Arpeggi. Its even better than this version. I'm afraid the studio versions won't be good as these live ones, so afraid. Radiohead are so good live.
This is a very elaborate song. Reminds me of Let Down, but faster. Phil Specter, thick, convoluted music. A wall of sound. I also think Down Is The New Up is one of the best Radiohead songs I've ever heard, and I KNOW Radiohead. Spooks and 15 Step are dope too. This albums gonna kick ass. Now all we need is Radiohead to fuckin give a release date atleast. The buggers have been denying us far too long now.
Can't hope more that they make this a single, this song alone on an album that is shaping up to top Kid A and OK Computer should give them the mainstream success they deserve, even though they don't want it I just wish I could hear stuff like this everytime I put the radio on than listen to half the shit thats out at the moment, don't make us wait longer!!!

actually Iplayajazzmaster is only half right...there's no reversed piano in the recorded version.. those are all reversed synths.
