All I can say is: MAGNIFICENT! That is one of the prettiest songs ever, and you do it just fantastic. So, so beautiful. Thank you for such a wonderful gift.
Should've let the first two notes just ring and pick single notes, instead of "chording" them slightly like you did, this made the song look cold and without feeling. But you defnitely nailed it anyway.
did you change something in the part you are playing around 5:30? i watched the bobby crispy video about how to play this song and your version seems different. i understand you both can have legitimate versions, anyway i like this part of your version so can you tell me where you got this? is this from a tab, from listening--if listening, can you tell me which album specifically? thx, sorry to bother you.
If I had or knew Jimmy Page's email address, or knew his YouTube account, I would forward this to him. I know of two people on YouTube that I think Jimmy would enjoy hearing. jun626 does note-for-note tone-for-tone reproductions of Jimmy's electric stuff and Philmacrakken (here) does wonderful interpretations (<- check out no quarter).
If I ever win the lottery, I'll try to get the three of us over to England for a weekend visit with Jimmy - my treat.
Wow! Sorry it took so long to hear this. One of my most favorite acoustic LZ songs ever besides STH. Hey, where's my all time request, UFO Try Me?? LOL! Thanks!
aww man, absolutely amazing. I love Led Zeppelin, and your cover is awesome, to be honest Robert Plants voice gets to me sometimes.. but Zeppelin's instrumentals are something of their own kind. Jimmy Paige <3 is hard to match to perfectly. Amazing. Love it. Keep up the good work :)
beautifully done! I've probably watched/listened to this video more than any other video on youtube, or anywhere for that matter... I shouldn't say it here but I'm tempted to put the audio from this on a cd to listen to it while I drive ... but only if it's ok with you
if word gets out about the number of times I (and I'm sure many others out there) have returned to listen to your playing on this video, someone from the recording industry will be demanding royalties...as far as stars, this one gets it's own galaxy
This is probably as good as I think it is. I never watch: I just listen. There are some missed chords, but no big deal. Most of this is spot on splendid.
The hate mail will come in when I say this is not a 5. But...it is a solid 4 something.
This is a solid 6 stars....5 just ain't enough.Let's see someone do better. The only one who could do it better would be Jimmy himself.Phil reproduces these songs better than anyone I have ever seen. How dare anyone give him less than 5 stars.
Thanks and thank you...I looked at your channel and got a big thrill out if that Page vid you have fav'ed. Not a huge Edge or Jack White fan....but I got a ton of respect for them when I saw the awe and reverence they showed when Page started playing Whole Lotta Love...
Yeah--it was an incredible film! It's called 'It Might Get Loud' if you haven't seen it already. I'm also not much of an Edge or Jack White fan, but there was lots of great material with Jimmy Page (he produced the film too.) Isn't that video fantastic?! It's just the look on their faces when he plays them Whole Lotta Love! And you're welcome...I wish I was half the guitarist you are!
Excellent Phil! You know I never could understand how Page could play stuff like this and then get so sloppy on his lead work. I wonder if it was the partying and moving around on stage that contributed to it?
I wondered about that for years. After a long e-conversation awhile back with a good guitarist who had a big hit in the 80s (& who shall remain nameless), we came to the conclusion that, in Zep at least, his sometimes-sloppy lead playing was probably intentional. As not only Zep's guitarist but also their producer, he might've thought certain songs just sounded better that way -- frenetic & almost off the rails (e.g., the solo in "Heartbreaker").
@Ken5244 no doubt any "sloppiness" in the sound...a number of JP's solos were deliberate..a number of the solos on the studio recordings were improvised takes including Heartbreaker...Jimmy Page: The solo itself was made up on the spot" (from a Guitar World" article "50 Greatest Guitar Solos")
Love it :)

Later, like in The Firm, he was just wasted.

His wasted playing sounds better than MOST guitarists sober playing on their best day.
