  • That vacuum cleaner looks suspiciously familiar. My grandma had one of similar design. In my early childhood, It often served as my imaginary Flash Gordon spaceship.

  • Space Age Couple Why don't you just do that.. . . . . ? 2012!

  • 0:50 Anthony Kiedis

  • What genre is this?? haha

  • @MegaCokamo ..."impossibilis blüsis" or something...

  • This was the first dance at our wedding...so romantic.

  • @snottydyck yeah! one shinbone & 3 ribs broken!!!

  • Nobody made music so distinctive as Don. I saw him and the magic band play live and sat there amazed that real people could play that music live with so much energy & humor like they were a bunch of alien magicians casting a spell. I am forever a fan!

  • dude i just recently started appreciating some of the other beefheart, too like, space-age couple is so relevant today unbelievably so called people out on the public expression of support for environmentalism and personal restrictive choices while being ignorant of simple shit like gardening on your own property instead of supporting the organic food industry before any of it really existed

  • Good sound, is this from the vinyl re-issue or what?!? I have a nice pristine 180g vinyl copy, still in it's unopened shrinkwrap. Anal, I know....

  • I head somewhere that he used that vacum cleaner(???) to pleasure his wife? Can anyone verify that please? RIP Don.

  • Great guitar tribute to the Captain by Ian Staples on you tube worth a listen. Long live rebel musicians

  • R.I.P. Don, we'll all miss your vision and inspiration

  • May this great artist RIP and never be forgotten for his contributions to art & music.. He passed away Dec 17, 2010.

  • Rest in Peace Don

  • RIP oh Captain my Captain

  • Its not very good music...but I like it!

  • wow this music just woke me up out of a trance

  • Brilliant

  • That vacuum cleaner is as future vintage as Van. Thanks for this superb 2mins 30 secs.

  • i bet if the captain was emerging today, he would do some alternative rap, and it'd be mesmerizing beyond anything else that's come up

  • @ixchaos I never taught of that before but..yes!!

  • @ixchaos lolololol he would totally be doing rap if he stuck to music after the 90s he's always about saying hello to the crow

  • What an incredible poet, musician and intrepid soldier in the War on Stupid.

Brilliant prophetic genius. He's now in the last stages of his physical form as Captain Beefheart with each tick of the clock taking him closer to his reunification with undifferentiated Everything. Beyond his unique, incomparable artistry........his lack of commercial success is more than sufficient evidence of his superiority.

"Art makes the terror of existence bearable..." ...Nietzsche

    Peace, Out...

  • @pyannaguy nice one !. very well put.

  • @electricburlesque Thank you for your helpful contribution!

So, do we get the correct quote, or did you get tired out telling me what I should have done? Is it "the horror of existence?"

  • @pyannaguy

I live in Cleveland. We've got the Rock n'

Roll Hall of Fame and Museum here.

The fact that Captain Beefheart hasn't

been inducted is not surprising yet

    mind boggling. His contribution to

music is immense. He is as innovative

as Beethoven was during his time.

  • @hirofan >>I live in Cleveland.<< My condolences. ... I'm kidding - I love Cleveland, the home of the late, great Harvey Pekar, among other greats.

You're so right about CB, and the Beethoven parallel is apt. Beethoven had to move from one depressing flat to another, often on a weekly basis, at times, and, although CB managed a modest living, let's just say that they're both undervalued in their lifetimes.

    He's a true unique original!

  • @hirofan The RnRHoF has lost all credibility due to only just now inducting Waits and still not inducting the Captain. Assholes.

  • @FunnyCowboyDance That's an insult to assholes!

  • @pyannaguy Heh, true. They've always been a joke.

  • @FunnyCowboyDance You are joking right??? Getting hung in the RnRHoF is like getting a burger named after you at the Hard Rock Cafe.... which in the case of Beefheart might make a modicum of sense but hardly a worthy tribute... Naw, forget about a place in that temple of mainstream and instead honor this man for what he was.. a true innovator and multi-faceted artist. Help spread the word to the myriad of younger folks who need to be exposed.

  • @chh5555 No, I'm not joking. I thought at this point everyone knew how inconsequential it was to be inducted? It's lovely to be recognized, but the way they've gone about recognizing people, and the ones they have chosen, goes to show they're reading much different, and much more boring, history books than most of us. You're right though, Beefheart deserves a massive, HS Thompsian-type memorial that truly matches his massive and indelible influence.

  • @chh5555 can't agree more my friend. we should all pay honor to him by staying true to ourselves and our art, and not let anyone or anything get in the way of it. he always inspired me to do that. i always knew that if anyone out there would be proud of me for being myself and an artist, he would be one of them. Peace and love.

  • @FunnyCowboyDance yea. Without Beefheart there would be no Tom Waits

  • @coldhardfacts Well, um, no, that's not true. That's like saying without the Maharishi there'd be no Beatles. Waits was certainly inspired by Beefheart a lot, but his original inspirations were more geared towards the Beats and the bluesmen. Beefheart's influence was later on.

  • @FunnyCowboyDance Ok, I won't argue that. I love both of em

  • @coldhardfacts Hey, me too! 'Scuse me while I throw on some Bone Machine.

  • @FunnyCowboyDance Yeah, I read that it was his wife who turned him on to Beefheart! He claims he hadn't heard him before he met her.

  • @pyannaguy

    good words and thoughts pyannaguy.

  • @andreaprodan Your taste is impeccable, andrea. When I assume planetary leadership, I'll see to it that your death is a quick and painless one.

  • The original big shot rapper holds forth.

  • one of my favorite beefheart songs! air sculpture!

  • whatever!!!! I just wanna dance!

  • don could also rap.

  • I wish Wesley Willis would have done a cover of this. The Captain's voice sounds oddly like Mr. Willis' on this track.

  • Lol, I've only seen willis cover one artist, and that was the Beatles. Hmmm... Beefheart and Wesley Willis... Now that would sound interesting!

  • @yesfan951 willis covered duran duran too... girls on film.

  • @yesfan951 Wesley Willis also did "Girls On Film", which is a Duran Duran tune.

  • @worldsworstjukebox i mean wow, who would think of that lol... good call

  • remove people from their catatonic states

  • the greatest Beat poet of them all

  • If Zappa is sometimes almost mathematical in his arranging of notes, Beefheart relies on the irrational and the ecstatic side of music. Hear how the instruments are always fighting each other, and then re-unite at some precise points in his songs.

Two out-of-this-world geniuses, but still incompatible in their idea of music (see the Bongo Fury experience to understand their differences).

  • absolutely spot-on!

  • Yeah I just wish Beefheart made as many albums as Zappa - I love both Zappas ruthlessly cold rational approach as much as Beefheart's irrational ecstacy

  • Don was obviously a totally different kind of genius: impulsive, instinctive and boundless. Much more anarchist in his approach to art, but at times an unstoppable force of nature. It truly seems to me that he approached music (and, later on,painting) with the careless curiosity and vitality of a child.

  • FZ was an accomplished and very literate composer, arranger, and guitar player. Very strict in the structure he gave to his compositions, and utterly demanding on the band's performance. He grew up on Varèse and modern classical music, even if he crushed the boundaries between "high" and "pop" music.

  • Uh oh He's gonna booglarize somebody.

  • Drop the cool tom foolery, and shed your nasty jewelry.

  • dogman.

  • still a classic from an artist who has influenced so many, this sounds so fresh in 2009 as it did way back, why in the hell he is not in some hall of fame for his work is beyond me, oh well, john lee hooker said it best, "aint nothin' but the best is left out for garbage, natural facts".

  • hol' a drinkin glass up to your eeeye after you scooped up a lil of the skyyy, n' it ain't blue no mooah!!!!

    what a voice!

  • whats on the leaves? space age chem trails...

  • What's on the leaves has turned into acid you freak

  • One interesting correlation between FZ and CB is the vacuum cleaner motif. As seen in this photo of CB and with FZ on the Chunga's Revenge album.

Frank seems to go industrial while the Captain appears a bit more domesticated.

  • Is that vacuum Chunga's Revenge?

  • WoW. love to dance to this around the house in me underpants. to this, and on the street with me headphones on, but dressed of course, cough, cough. Thanks for posting. Love it, and CBH. LOL..

  • i think frank and don learned a lot from each other, you can see that both were influenced musically by a give and take in the beginning.

  • I really haven't heard Beefheart's music before, but right off I can tell the difference from Zappa's music. Zappa, although can be awkward at times, seems to have more structure and control.

However, I like the quality of Beefheart's voice. when I first heard him sing in Willie the Pimp off of Hot Rats I envisioned a totally different image of a human being. pretty cool none the less

  • He did play harmonica, saxophone, and piano, but that doesn't mean he knew what he was doing toztizok.

  • @yesfan951

    Oh yes it does.

  • Musicians may be artists, but painting and music are still 2 totally different things.

  • @yesfan951 no they aren't

  • @gezunder it is when your crossing over from one to the other

  • @gezunder

    of course they are.

  • Replying to a poster. NO I didnt need to write what I did, but im honest and blunt to a fault. Im sorry to have offended anyone as Im kind of a dick with ears when it comes to certain things. My main Beef with Beefheart is that i have always been a loyal Zappa fan. We all know that Zappa produced Beefhearts Trout Mask album. I just always felt ( without proof) that he ripped off Franks music . Like I said, have no proof. Sorry!

  • Again sorry if I upset anyone. I willkeep my useless comments to myself from now on. Beefheart did have some class and I did acually like some of his later stuff.Lets face it, beefy is an aquired taste. Again ,sorry to have offended anyone. Zappa was always my man and the guys grew up together eating out of a helms bread truck. Good enough for me and Im shutting the hell up. Sorry!!!!!!

  • I enjoyed reading your opinion, thanks. Love this from the captain. It ain't what it says -- it's what it don't say.

  • I don't really feel that Beefheart ripped off Zappa, I think they were both just weird guys that had their own unique views of music. The only thing I truly have against Don is how he treated his band, to be totally honest, I respect the Magic Band wayyyyyyyyyyy more than him. I just kind of look at the music from a musicians standpoint. I can't really beleive that Don, a guy who can't play an instrument, wrote music as complicated and diverse as he said he did.

  • i too listen mostly from a musicians stand point and give most respect to the band and drumbo in particular, however it may be worth noting that on the documentary "the artist formerly known as beefheart" i seem to recall drumbo vouching for don creating all parts on piano and asking drumbo for the most part to transpose and assign the different parts to the band. Maybe don deserves more credit than you give him?

  • Awesome picture, where did you get it at?

  • Yes, you really had to write that. I'm not taking offence, I understand you. You need an open mind for this stuff. But did you REALLY have to write that? I mean, you'r only going to get flamed for this.

  • He played harmonica bettert han most and tenor sax like a mother. I saw him play 2 saxes at the same time more than once, He was a bad ass never to be duped!!!!

  • I remember the day I bought the album, and the exact place I bought it. Got it home, thought it was trash. Took me a while, then realized how wrong my first impression was. This is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST. Never get tired of it.

  • I bought this album when it was released. Wish it be released on CD. Gratz, Yesfan. Great sound quality.

  • anyone know how to get this song?

  • by purchasing 'lick my decals off, baby'.

  • you can purchase it outside the music buisness through an anti capitalist company specializing in custard clamps and chrome cramps they also supply muttering classes for frozen ballet dancers.

  • bom bom bi dop dop dom

  • Love the drumming

  • DRUMBO!

  • fast n bulbous

  • my introduction to another music other than pop!!!
