That vacuum cleaner looks suspiciously familiar. My grandma had one of similar design. In my early childhood, It often served as my imaginary Flash Gordon spaceship.
Nobody made music so distinctive as Don. I saw him and the magic band play live and sat there amazed that real people could play that music live with so much energy & humor like they were a bunch of alien magicians casting a spell. I am forever a fan!
dude i just recently started appreciating some of the other beefheart, too like, space-age couple is so relevant today unbelievably so called people out on the public expression of support for environmentalism and personal restrictive choices while being ignorant of simple shit like gardening on your own property instead of supporting the organic food industry before any of it really existed
What an incredible poet, musician and intrepid soldier in the War on Stupid.
Brilliant prophetic genius. He's now in the last stages of his physical form as Captain Beefheart with each tick of the clock taking him closer to his reunification with undifferentiated Everything. Beyond his unique, incomparable artistry........his lack of commercial success is more than sufficient evidence of his superiority.
"Art makes the terror of existence bearable..." ...Nietzsche
@hirofan >>I live in Cleveland.<< My condolences. ... I'm kidding - I love Cleveland, the home of the late, great Harvey Pekar, among other greats.
You're so right about CB, and the Beethoven parallel is apt. Beethoven had to move from one depressing flat to another, often on a weekly basis, at times, and, although CB managed a modest living, let's just say that they're both undervalued in their lifetimes.
@FunnyCowboyDance You are joking right??? Getting hung in the RnRHoF is like getting a burger named after you at the Hard Rock Cafe.... which in the case of Beefheart might make a modicum of sense but hardly a worthy tribute... Naw, forget about a place in that temple of mainstream and instead honor this man for what he was.. a true innovator and multi-faceted artist. Help spread the word to the myriad of younger folks who need to be exposed.
@chh5555 No, I'm not joking. I thought at this point everyone knew how inconsequential it was to be inducted? It's lovely to be recognized, but the way they've gone about recognizing people, and the ones they have chosen, goes to show they're reading much different, and much more boring, history books than most of us. You're right though, Beefheart deserves a massive, HS Thompsian-type memorial that truly matches his massive and indelible influence.
@chh5555 can't agree more my friend. we should all pay honor to him by staying true to ourselves and our art, and not let anyone or anything get in the way of it. he always inspired me to do that. i always knew that if anyone out there would be proud of me for being myself and an artist, he would be one of them. Peace and love.
@coldhardfacts Well, um, no, that's not true. That's like saying without the Maharishi there'd be no Beatles. Waits was certainly inspired by Beefheart a lot, but his original inspirations were more geared towards the Beats and the bluesmen. Beefheart's influence was later on.
If Zappa is sometimes almost mathematical in his arranging of notes, Beefheart relies on the irrational and the ecstatic side of music. Hear how the instruments are always fighting each other, and then re-unite at some precise points in his songs.
Two out-of-this-world geniuses, but still incompatible in their idea of music (see the Bongo Fury experience to understand their differences).
Yeah I just wish Beefheart made as many albums as Zappa - I love both Zappas ruthlessly cold rational approach as much as Beefheart's irrational ecstacy
Don was obviously a totally different kind of genius: impulsive, instinctive and boundless. Much more anarchist in his approach to art, but at times an unstoppable force of nature. It truly seems to me that he approached music (and, later on,painting) with the careless curiosity and vitality of a child.
FZ was an accomplished and very literate composer, arranger, and guitar player. Very strict in the structure he gave to his compositions, and utterly demanding on the band's performance. He grew up on Varèse and modern classical music, even if he crushed the boundaries between "high" and "pop" music.
still a classic from an artist who has influenced so many, this sounds so fresh in 2009 as it did way back, why in the hell he is not in some hall of fame for his work is beyond me, oh well, john lee hooker said it best, "aint nothin' but the best is left out for garbage, natural facts".
WoW. love to dance to this around the house in me underpants. to this, and on the street with me headphones on, but dressed of course, cough, cough. Thanks for posting. Love it, and CBH. LOL..
I really haven't heard Beefheart's music before, but right off I can tell the difference from Zappa's music. Zappa, although can be awkward at times, seems to have more structure and control.
However, I like the quality of Beefheart's voice. when I first heard him sing in Willie the Pimp off of Hot Rats I envisioned a totally different image of a human being. pretty cool none the less
Replying to a poster. NO I didnt need to write what I did, but im honest and blunt to a fault. Im sorry to have offended anyone as Im kind of a dick with ears when it comes to certain things. I don't really feel that Beefheart ripped off Zappa, I think they were both just weird guys that had their own unique views of music. The only thing I truly have against Don is how he treated his band, to be totally honest, I respect the Magic Band wayyyyyyyyyyy more than him. I just kind of look at the music from a musicians standpoint. I can't really beleive that Don, a guy who can't play an instrument, wrote music as complicated and diverse as he said he did.
i too listen mostly from a musicians stand point and give most respect to the band and drumbo in particular, however it may be worth noting that on the documentary "the artist formerly known as beefheart" i seem to recall drumbo vouching for don creating all parts on piano and asking drumbo for the most part to transpose and assign the different parts to the band. Maybe don deserves more credit than you give him?
