A perfect ending to one of the most brilliant albums ever recorded. This came out in 1972, while most bands were still transitioning from the dated sounds of psychedelia. It took another seven years for The Wall to come out, where people would finally be ready for this kind of album.
@legallucy First of all, the actual album you're talking about is called Loaded (Fully Loaded is the extended version) and second, that album was little more than an attempt at a commercial sound, that isn't who/what Lou Reed is at all.
And third, it's a little late for him to 'stick' to Loaded, since this and that are decades old.
@legallucy First of all, it's called Loaded (Fully Loaded is the expanded version); second, Loaded was an attempt at a commercial sound, totally unlike who/what Lou Reed really is; and third, this and that are decades old, kind of hard for him to 'stick' to it.
I was able to see the screening of the Berlin concert film at the Tribeca Film Festival in '08 (Lou was there!), and I was in awe of this song... it was (and is) SO beautiful and powerful, ahhh.
Why does he add "Mary Queen of Scots"? What would he know of her looks? I think he was trying to sound poetic. Or is it something to do with him hating Catholism? Couldnt he just of used someone like Marilyn Monroe or Joan of Arc?
@jjpeterson1 Have you seen any portraits of her by her contemporary artists? She was very beautiful, regal and tall, enchanting every European male's imagination, and winning them to her cause.
The best song ever written, and this is the best song of the best album in the world. I cant believe how beautiful this is. Im glad I saw this live in Tallin and even bob ezrin was there and steve hunter... I love this beyond words, music just cant get any better or more beautiful, than you mr lou reed
@MrVelderado Best song and album ever ? Remove your head from your dreary, depressed ass and take the shit out of your ears. Diversify your music listening !
I've been listening to this album for more than 30 years and I have to say that this song in particular grows in power as the years go by.....
Loving the album as I do, I've never been able to relate to the subject matter, never experiencing the drugs & beatings & loss of children & suicide of a loved one.....but I've been caught in the album's spell all these years....
The "Berlin" album is NOT for the casual listener, but "Sad Song" is a MAJOR 20th Century artistic achievement......
Berlin, my favourite album of all time and Sad Song is my favourite song of all. I bought this album the very first day it came out in England in 73. I saw Lou perform Berlin in London in 2007 and 2008 and it blew me away!!!
i never thought this album could be pulled off live but the show at st.annes warehouse was unbelievable...from lou, his band and of course the magnificent choir. Tried hard not to shed tears but gave up in the end. LOU your a genius.
... I don't get how this was commercially overlooked when Dark Side of The Moon was so huge. Both great albums, sure, but people said this was bloated and depressing... and Floyd weren't?
I agree with you. The album almost has the same good qualities as 'the wall' the rock opera feel. Have you seen the DVD release of the live album its excellent.
The main difference is David Gilmour, the guitar sense in all of us is treated mightly with pink floyd....my opinion.
I moved out last week, after 6 years of marriage. The relationship got violent, my son got caught in the middle of the arguing, yelling and abuse. I can relate to this sentiment. I feel sorry for my 5 year old son who is in an unhappy frame of mind.
i know, everything sucks and everyone is stupid!!! why can't everyone be more like me?? man, nothing is EVER as good as the stuff i like, everything is soooo stupid, i agree with you!!
If you can find it, then check out the live version he did on the album lou reed live (back in the seventies). It's the first I ever heard of this track, and remains the most intense in my opninion... no choirs or orchestra, but the band with the two lead gitarists really nails it down, and reed sings great!
an amazing, amazing, an haunting album. it is so bad how overlooked it is. i know it's all about a woman on drugs. my question is does she kill herself in this song? i've heard that before and it seems to relate well to this song, the last one on the album.
I think this song is intended as Jim's reflection on the discord that leads up to, and followed, Caroline's suicide. I think her suicide occurs in the gap between 'The Kids' and 'The Bed' (which explicitly mentions her cutting her wrists with a razor). Excellent but very dark album, and yes, I agree that the biggest tragedy of the album is how overlooked it was on its release in '73.
I remember the tenniscourt...I watched it several times.....it caught some emptiness, hard to explain. It was a brilliant idea, I just sat there mesmerized watching it...

Berlin is by far Lou Reeds finest work. Sad song brings to an end the story so well.
The critics at the time slated Berlin.........."shows just how wrong you can be"
Its very strange it takes over thirty years for berlin to get any sort of praise,
