This is the proof that Tony is ded...Paulie is sitting alone and all the people who were sitting around those tables for years are now ded, including Tony...Thats my oppinon...
Out of every character left in the show I feel the worst for Paulie. He's alone and he has to live with the fact that (I think) he sold out Tony to New York.
Aren't all these people claiming Tony died just going on speculation? I mean I thought that was why David Chase ended it that way, so that nobody knows for sure what happened.
i think this was the scene i felt a bit emotional watching it because it dawns on you doesnt it that its finished, just him paulie, sil in hospital, chris dead, bobby dead, ralph dead, phil dead, nothing left
@goodchild181 Well I guess there would still be Patsy Parisi, Benny Fazio, and some other people, but other than that, that's basically it. All the other important people are gone. Its so sad.
@IndependentGeorge76 Na, they end the series with Tony still alive at the end eating pretzels/chips and watching TV. Phil Leotardo was killed off at the end, he was shot then his head run over by his SUV.
2:30 to 2:40 will let you know what david chase didn't reveal in the last scene. who's responsible at least for "picking up the scraps after it's all over." he talks to tony as if he's past tense already, that's when i knew tony was going out for sure
@Charlir91 Not sure what makes a person an "underboss", but if anything, in the last couple of seasons, Paulie was sort of on the outside of Tony's inner circle (aka, why New York didn't put a hit out on him). I think in the last season, Bobby actually out ranked him. Why that happened is debatable. Tony and Sil always had at least the suspicion that he was the one talking to Johnny Sac (lack of loyalty).
@snowstormcan I went back like 30 pages to try and figure out what the hell you were referring to, but couldn't find it. Soprano family didn't have an underboss from the time Tony unofficially usurped Junior until Junior gets locked up. After Tony becomes the official boss, his underboss is definitely Bobby. In fact, when Brooklyn is putting a hit on Jersey management, they specifically say the hit is for Tony, Sil, Bobby, and NOT Paulie.
It's sad when you think about it in the first season there was s whole group just talking bullshit and now it's just paulie sitting by himself. It's really sad when you think about it.
@shadowknight1121 ..I hear yeah!! It is sad to see just the two of them......Well, at least this series (Amazing one at that!) was aknowledged the "BEST"...Out of every other TV/Series/movies of the 2000 decade! As it should be!
@shadowknight1121 In fact, there was even more people in Season 4 (Furio, Ralphie, Bobby, pretty much everyone). And yeah, it's really sad. Such a powerful, clever, and effective scene.
As a former NYer, married to the Mob, now living in Europe (I hadda leave town), this series was really fascinating, but I missed the entire last season, I think. It had been borrowed so many times from my public library system, it was all scratched up. Thanks for posting. I went back to NY briefly last year, left after 2 nights. Scared me too much. The smell, particularly. I enjoyed staying in Brooklyn for a night in a private home, however. My best to ya!
can someone help me out here, ive read that starting season 6 Paulie became underboss, but yet Leotardo killed Baccala and rest of management, isnt underboss management. and here Tony makes Paulie a captain to a different crew so was Paulie always a capo and never underboss or was he demoted at some point
I don't get why Tony says Patsy is going to be part of the family now. Wasn't he always Tony's cousin? How would his son marrying Meadow make a difference?
that cat at the end just caps the scene perfectly. sopranos writers have got to be some of the most talented out there, hell, we got Mad Men and Boardwalk empire from two of them. i hope Robin Greene writes a new show with Mitchell Burgess (blue bloods just desnt do it for me)
"We decapitate and we do business with whatever is left"-P. Leotardo
Kind of funny that Paulie was not targeted like Bobby, Tony, and Sil. If you read MasterofSopranos (dot) com, it's hard to argue that Tony wasn't killed at the end. It would make sense bc NY needed to kill Tony for appearances. NY had to save face & retaliate for Phil, otherwise the perception would be that NJ one upped NY.
I think Paulie gave Tony up. He is discontent & knows Tony was inches away from killing him in Miami.
@StuUngar interesting. i always just thought, with the way their talking at the table before AJ shows up hinted Tony is probably going to serve time. it's kind of hinted before when Phil mentions that he cant trust Tony because he never has been in prison, plus agent Harris will probably be arrested for leaking info, which will get him convicted, i kind of think having his brains blown out moments after it ends is just unimaginative, (writing wise, mobsters aren't exactly lateral thinkers).
@cologey Check out the website I mentioned in my initial post. It is a very in depth analysis explaining why all signs point to Tony being killed. It uses everything from David Chase quotes, tie in from previous episodes and character quotes, analyzes the camera angles used, the depiction of the anonymous characters in the diner and the POV perspective of each Soprano.
As much as I hate to admit it, Tony was killed in the final episode.
@StuUngar checked it out, not saying it doesnt have its points, but i dont buy it. but then, the whole point of the end was to create conflicting arguments of what happened, so we're both wrong, and right.
@cologey Hate to be so black and white on the issue. But I say TS is deceased. There are theories as to why Tony could be alive, and they have been handily shot down. Most of it is covered in the website I directed u too.
The theory that Tony is killed in the final episode has quite a bit of evidence working in its favor and I haven't seen any good counter arguments other than "Well, I think" type rebuttals and I will take a thought out analysis and evidence vs "I think" any day.
@StuUngar dude, its a tv show, not heizenberg's uncertainty principle. why are you so 'F.U., i'm right' , who cares?, i was just saying, thats my oppinion (underline on 'my'), i'm sorry i dont have a television analysis website to direct you to, but calm down. just trying to show my mutual appreciation for the show, not trying to say we revolve around the sun or anything, not that i would be the first to say it.
@cologey I was pretty cordial about it. Just saying I don't agree with the whole-we both have opinions and we're both right-mode of thinking.
If that's your opinion, thats fine and you're entitled to it. I just prefer to debate with evidence and analysis using that evidence vs. "I think." You'll have to forgive me, I'm a "don't just tell me, show me" type of person.
With everything that Paulie did he made it at the end and became the boss. That is always funny to me. What a character he was. Imagine if Christopher did not die would have he been the new boss after the fallout or whacked like Bobby.
@cc1982ish well you have to show the handing of the thrown from tony to AJ and in 20 years a decent amount of characters might be dead or too old to do their parts.
Everyone who WOULD be able to follow this family in some more or less good way ARE either dead(chrissy) or hiding(furio) or silvio(deactivated) - the soprano family is done and it everything began after tony soprano started acting as a boss,he was bad choice for boss,he killed people for no good reason - ralph, chrissy (maybe he was a junkie but he would be able to lead this family at some later point)....it clearly shows that "REAL" mafia which was Soprano family no longer exist/function...
The whole point of this series -or at least they decided to go that way at some point, is to show downfall of new school mafia family dying, with last scene that blackouts - producer wants to show that soprano family is DONE - tony gets whacked(most likely) or just go to jail since one of old school gangster who knows about alot things is informant so he's literally fucked. paulie may survived but he wouldnt be able to follow this family - because with who?
@MrNesfield Hope you are correct, although David Chase went so artsy at the end and loaded so many ambiguities in the last episode you can argue both sides. I suspect he was trying for a "I can't or am too damn stubborn and sophisticated to give a clear ending so let me give the marks enough stuff to talk about forever."
I have not seen any polls but I suspect all that was talked about was how crappy the ending was--and that got old fast the the Sopranos faded into the Jersey shore sunset.
What a warm-hearted thing for Tony Soprano to say about his own nephew who he killed with his own hands: "Since he died, my gambling luck has done a 180". By this time, Tony has almost completely lost his humanity, and doesn't even know it.
I think this cat is Chase's way of saying Paulie doesn't have long for this world. Without Tony to protect him, his incompetence will get him killed soon enough anyway.
That pretty much eliminates every single major Soprano left in the crime family.
@jimpurdie, they had a short scene that Paulie talked about earlier in the series where they had a statue fo the Virgin Mary floating over the bar; when he shook his head and looked again it was gone. I think it was shortly after he killed someone.
Even though these guy's commit evil act's you just sense deep down they are good people. Plus thats the sign of great acting you believe this stuff....great series one of the best....
@truthforme1 Relatable people definitely. I don't know about good. You can't be involved in that kind of stuff and have an active conscience. In fact, I can't remember seeing one of those guys do something altruistic if it wasn't implied they were getting some sort of return out of it.
Its fucked really, you grow to love these characters. Bobby, Big pussy, Chrissy, all of them. And the most fucked up character, the most violent piece of shit, Paulie, lives on in the end. This worlds a fucked up place aint it? lol
i dont think paulie was involved in tonys killing Paulie loved tony and tony loved paulie in some weird way...if you remember the scene on the boat where tony was asking if paulie told johny sack the joke about his wife he knew he did and so did paulie...in fact paulie almost looked like accepting being killed but tony let him go cause he like him . . that was one of the best scenes of the entire show.
@acrssl tony died in the last episode.... i know it cut out at the end but the writers and directors as well as the actors have pretty much said its all done.
PAULIE IS THE ONE WHO PUT THE HIT ON TONY. HE KNEW IF TONY DIED HE WOULD BE NEXT IN LINE. LOOK AT TONYS CREW, EVERYONE WAS PISSED OFF AT HIM. DON'T FORGET PAULIE WOULD OF TURNED ON TONY BEFORE EXCEPT JOHNNY LIED TO HIM
@ManFtheseNsandBs Paulie wouldn't become boss..... he might become acting boss if such a thing happened but he isn't exactly popular in the sopranos crew if you hadn't noticed. He would become acting boss probably but that wouldn't last long. Maybe a couple months or so to see how sil is doing and if sil does not come out of his coma then the family will start shifting towards a new boss. NOT paulie. And paulie knows this, he cannot become boss.
@RebirthWoWGuild Sil is going to be a vegetable for the rest of his life. You talk as if Paulie is very smart and plans ahead and looks at all the possible angles. Chrissys dead, Junior and his crew are done, Sils gonna be handicapped. Who would be the new boss? Someone outside the family? Or Paulie whose been in the game for 30 fuckin years. If you agree that Tony died, who else would put the hit on tony? Just look at him when tony walks away. Paulie fucking Walnuts, Boss of Northern Jersey
Multifacted Characters made this show a success. Paulie is a Cold Blooded Killer, yet he has Superstitions / Mother issues / Told Jokes Poorly by repeating them....etc...The Dark Humour is what I enjoyed most about the series....
@dukee155 But then they would have to have a 20-something year old jackoff who tries to be the Paulie Walnuts that Tony Sirico was, and I don't think that would work...
@dukee155 nah, that would be a boring period piece. watch the godfather if you wanna see that story anyway. the whole appeal of the sopranos was the way they reimagined the mob genre to fit in our time period.
@fheisk Great point there Sopranos fan. It's funny in the sense that in one scene you see Tony whacking somebody then in another he's having problems with a cell phone....
@dukee155 Too bad it would be the same Paulie unless they used some major effects to digitally make Tony Sirico (actor who plays Paulie) look at least 20 years younger.
@TheCCCKKK plus if they do what I'm talking about they will be doing it in a few years from now and most of the sopranos cast and crew will be really old by then
Let's assume that Tony did die in the last episode and Silvio never recovered from the coma. Would Paulie then take place as boss of the family? If not, then who would?
@kometman I don't think Paulie would have been much of a boss. To be honest; i don't think he would have wanted that. He didn't even want to take over the Cifaretto-crew
NO one knows this but David made Paulie "By Himself" at the table at 2:98 to represent him going to become boss after Tony's death. its a metaphoically insite to the future.
and yeah, Silvio was still alive BUT he was deativated!and he gave sil the chance to retire
@EAGLES101ification Another way of looking at it is that Paulie wasn't long for this world. The cat stared at Chrissy's picture (dead) and at the end of the scene, the cat stares at Paulie.
@Jroy9108 Gotdayum that is so true. I think the networks weren't getting enough play from viewers because everybody's favorite show for 8+ years was the sopranos.

Even though these guy's commit evil act's you just sense deep down they are good people. Plus thats the sign of great acting you believe this stuff....great series one of the best....
truthforme1 7 months ago 3
@truthforme1 Relatable people definitely. I don't know about good. You can't be involved in that kind of stuff and have an active conscience. In fact, I can't remember seeing one of those guys do something altruistic if it wasn't implied they were getting some sort of return out of it.

can anyone really be as paranoid as paulie.
gobagool1 7 months ago in playlist Sopranos
Its fucked really, you grow to love these characters. Bobby, Big pussy, Chrissy, all of them. And the most fucked up character, the most violent piece of shit, Paulie, lives on in the end. This worlds a fucked up place aint it? lol
MustacheStashCash 7 months ago
@MustacheStashCash woah! Tony is a much bigger piece of shit than Paulie! Come on, Tony is selfish, disgusting human being!
MrNesfield 6 months ago
@MrNesfield Yeah, but he dies at the end lol
MustacheStashCash 6 months ago
i dont think paulie was involved in tonys killing Paulie loved tony and tony loved paulie in some weird way...if you remember the scene on the boat where tony was asking if paulie told johny sack the joke about his wife he knew he did and so did paulie...in fact paulie almost looked like accepting being killed but tony let him go cause he like him . . that was one of the best scenes of the entire show.
magandaboy007 7 months ago
@magandaboy007 and when did tony die?
acrssl 7 months ago
@acrssl tony died in the last episode.... i know it cut out at the end but the writers and directors as well as the actors have pretty much said its all done.
magandaboy007 7 months ago
@magandaboy007 i dont believe that shit
acrssl 7 months ago
"I moved the picture. The fucking thing came to the new spot... and stared!"
haha, the show wouldn't be the same without Paulie's superstitions and germaphobic behavior.
Marblez3 7 months ago
PAULIE IS THE ONE WHO PUT THE HIT ON TONY. HE KNEW IF TONY DIED HE WOULD BE NEXT IN LINE. LOOK AT TONYS CREW, EVERYONE WAS PISSED OFF AT HIM. DON'T FORGET PAULIE WOULD OF TURNED ON TONY BEFORE EXCEPT JOHNNY LIED TO HIM
ManFtheseNsandBs 7 months ago
@ManFtheseNsandBs Paulie wouldn't become boss..... he might become acting boss if such a thing happened but he isn't exactly popular in the sopranos crew if you hadn't noticed. He would become acting boss probably but that wouldn't last long. Maybe a couple months or so to see how sil is doing and if sil does not come out of his coma then the family will start shifting towards a new boss. NOT paulie. And paulie knows this, he cannot become boss.
RebirthWoWGuild 7 months ago
@RebirthWoWGuild Sil is going to be a vegetable for the rest of his life. You talk as if Paulie is very smart and plans ahead and looks at all the possible angles. Chrissys dead, Junior and his crew are done, Sils gonna be handicapped. Who would be the new boss? Someone outside the family? Or Paulie whose been in the game for 30 fuckin years. If you agree that Tony died, who else would put the hit on tony? Just look at him when tony walks away. Paulie fucking Walnuts, Boss of Northern Jersey
ManFtheseNsandBs 7 months ago
Tony should've killed Paulie. Neurotic, supersticious, sociopathic, germ phobic, mama's boy. And he wanted to kill the store cat. What a prick.

This is such a sad depressing scene
HardikG121 8 months ago
Multifacted Characters made this show a success. Paulie is a Cold Blooded Killer, yet he has Superstitions / Mother issues / Told Jokes Poorly by repeating them....etc...The Dark Humour is what I enjoyed most about the series....

I say that they need to make a new sopranos that takes place in the 1970s and tells the story about Paulie and Tonys father
dukee155 8 months ago 105
@dukee155 And Junior Soprano ofc!! That's a great idea!
fillar7 8 months ago
@fillar7 the best part about it is they can use mostly new actors because the original sopranos actors have aged a lot
dukee155 8 months ago
@dukee155 But then they would have to have a 20-something year old jackoff who tries to be the Paulie Walnuts that Tony Sirico was, and I don't think that would work...
kometman 7 months ago
@dukee155 nah, that would be a boring period piece. watch the godfather if you wanna see that story anyway. the whole appeal of the sopranos was the way they reimagined the mob genre to fit in our time period.
fheisk 7 months ago
@fheisk true also some of the cars from the 70s are becoming increasingly rare so it will be hard to make certain scenes that involve cars.
dukee155 7 months ago
@dukee155 it will be like mad men where cars are only shown from far away and like 1% of the time lol
fheisk 7 months ago
@fheisk Great point there Sopranos fan. It's funny in the sense that in one scene you see Tony whacking somebody then in another he's having problems with a cell phone....

@dukee155 'His ginnycholorian count is off the chart! Not even master Hoffa has a ginnychlorian count that high'
otherjr 5 months ago
@dukee155 Too bad it would be the same Paulie unless they used some major effects to digitally make Tony Sirico (actor who plays Paulie) look at least 20 years younger.
TheCCCKKK 4 months ago
@TheCCCKKK plus if they do what I'm talking about they will be doing it in a few years from now and most of the sopranos cast and crew will be really old by then
dukee155 4 months ago
@dukee155 A Sopranos without Tony Soprano is like (insert line)

@jack11643 Well there will be tony but he would be less of a major character.

****SPOILER WARNING****
Let's assume that Tony did die in the last episode and Silvio never recovered from the coma. Would Paulie then take place as boss of the family? If not, then who would?
****SPOILERS END****
kometman 9 months ago
@kometman I don't think Paulie would have been much of a boss. To be honest; i don't think he would have wanted that. He didn't even want to take over the Cifaretto-crew

NO one knows this but David made Paulie "By Himself" at the table at 2:98 to represent him going to become boss after Tony's death. its a metaphoically insite to the future.
and yeah, Silvio was still alive BUT he was deativated!and he gave sil the chance to retire
Paulie was and "is" the last Man standing.
EAGLES101ification 9 months ago
@EAGLES101ification Another way of looking at it is that Paulie wasn't long for this world. The cat stared at Chrissy's picture (dead) and at the end of the scene, the cat stares at Paulie.

@Jroy9108 Gotdayum that is so true. I think the networks weren't getting enough play from viewers because everybody's favorite show for 8+ years was the sopranos.
wizeguy681 10 months ago
Does anybody know why they took Sopranos off the air? It couldn't have been the ratings

@wizeguy681 cuz its "better to burn out than to fade away."

@wizeguy681 the writers ended the story the ratings were at an all time high at the end of the last season. They wanted to 'end on a high'
