having listened to Elena is lots of very different roles...i dont think that she is out of tune in this video, yes there are pitchy parts, but for the most i think it is her really dark tone and colouring that causes many people to disputer her tuning.

Well, I don't know if the problem is tune, I think the problem is her vibrato; though I don't know much of opera I know I don't like that kind of exaggerated vibratos where you can't distinguish the notes being sung.

who was this actress? I have seen this wonderful opera performed live here in town. The New York City Opera Company put it lon. did a great job! a masterpiece! It lasted well over 3 hrs I was very tired after I saw it that night. Great cast and great singing of course the costumes were first rate! Where was this particular opera staged? sometimes prices for tix can be cheap. I do wanna say if u are into opera then buy a ticket, if not this should be your first one to try. go see this.

My favourite Carmen of the 70's was Teresa Berganza. She sang the role with Domingo in Edinburgh, 1977. Very seductive! Clear mezzo voice. Transferred well to vinyl! (And Milnes was a commanding Escamillo!)

He he, the Charle Ive's version of the aria. She's like a step above the orchestra at times, it's a riot. In all fairness, though, it is sometimes extremely difficult to hear the orchestra when you are singing on stage. If you don't have a good sense of key, I can totally see how you can get off. The tenor doesn't seem to have the same problems, though. Really fun to listen to, especially for the unexpected dissonances.

Gosh... this woman has a wonderful vocal quality, but the intonation problems make this performance a pain to bear. It's almost comical to see how the expression in her eyes and forehead change when she realizes she's hitting all the wrong pitches at the beginning.

This woman was horrible. Bad diction, imprecise pitch all the time. She possesed a large instrument with poor technique and musical education... I remember that she ruined a complete recording of "Trovatore" with Price and Bonisolli (at his peak)...

That was my response at the first note. "Oooo, that's too high!" But it did get better as it went on.

My favorite recording of this is probably the 1975 Solti rendition, with Tatiana Troyanos and Placido Domingo.
