Awesome :P When the main beat kicks in, what are you doing on the high hats with your left hand whilst you're hitting the splash cymbals? I can't work that out from watching any youtube video...
Its incredible how in this song the drums literally talk! I mean, you can perfectly know even how the lyrics are going just by listening to the drums and of course because of your clean playing, you rock dude!
Man this is just insane. I have seen a band called Crimson Sunset in Quebec, Canada doing DT cover and they were amazingly good, but you are totaly way over talented than anyone i've seen covering them. Tight, religious integrality of the song. Amazing work, keep up praticing and i'll buy any album you'll be playing on.
What's kinda funny about this performance is that the intro part could be for any number of DT songs... I think Mike Portnoy needs some new ideas so he can stop copying and pasting the same fills and licks into every song they write. He's become way too predictable and stale over the past few albums.
Yes, I am. And I think you're misunderstanding my point. I'm referring specifically to the drum parts he's playing at the start of the song, not the entire song itself (though the rest of the song also has recycled parts).
Also, being a long-time listener of DT (back to WDADU) and the complex and musical parts he used to create back then, it's easy to hear how his playing - his "tool box", if you will" - has been reduced to a handful of repetitive licks and fills over the years.
Though...in light of his recent departure from DT, and his reasoning behind it - feeling burned out, needing a break from that band, etc - that could be precisely what it was. He was burned out, his creativity was suffering and he was going through the motions for the most part. It also underscores why his playing in other projects (OSI, Transatlantic, etc) seems so much more inspired and creative - much like his older work with DT.
@lupine73 And that's exactly what it is. It's not his technique that beacme reduced, but the complexity of his play. The drum parts became simpler and that's why it's maybe good that he is know reducing the stress.
@lupine73 Your not the first one i meet saying this. I'm no drummer and didn't noticed it... but maybe they could use need new side projects to farm new ideas. Transatlantic had to wait 10 years to come back and LTE is over... :)
awesome job man my only criticism is that you have the chops you just need the feel. Try to get more into the music you play. It will make your already awesome playing even more fantastic.
Fantastic is exactly the same that portnoy when plays this song. I was thinking the break in 7:32 is like NOW YOU HAVE GOT SOMETHING TO DIE FOR by lamb of god.

You are a very precise Drummer!
Nice Playing also... and if you can play that:
Pat Metheny Group - The Way Up
then you are a good drummer, because here you can learn very good dynamic playing!

Perhaps the break from DT will do him good.
