Well those in my opinion should've been on the list. Anyway, no need to debate over this, since no one (at least me-lol) isn't getting paid for this so, peace be with you.
I like your choices & I'm sure that most (if not all) of the films people have been lambasting you for not adding are works you are familiar with, and even enjoy! (I cringe a little everytime someone says, "hey! What about 1984!?!" like you'd never heard of it!) As for I Am Legend, I would have liked it more if they hadn't thrown the Richard Mathewson script out the window! SPOILER ALERT: he IS the monster! And, City of Man is Aldiss's Grey Beard... if it was done as an action flic!
I'm surprised A clockwork orange isn't on the list. Fairly decent choices but the decisions you made in the list seem odd... May want to watch quite a few more dystopian films at least 20 more and remake the list and see if it changes any. Would be an interesting thing to see. If you do decide to do so give me a contact.
It must be pretty hard to make a list of only the Top 5 Dystopian films of all time---there's so many great films to choose from! lol Great list, though. :)
Mad Max 1 is qualified as an dystopian film, since it represents an failed society, where underfunded police are fighting against those crazy criminalsm, and there is an shortage of everything, with of course that bleak atmosphere. Mad Max 2 just shows what happened to that dystopia.
i agree on most choices but instead of bladrunner i would have said a boy and his dog...very much more relevant but i'm sure you have never heard of it dude oh well jolly good show otherwise
So happy i found this. Glad to see someone enjoys Brazil. One of my favorite movies of all time. Music, production, story, directing, acting; all top notch. But def check out Children of Men, another good movie. "Remember, we're all in this together"
Yeah, the longer the better. But you also kinda see ehy some scenes had to be deleted. Like the Bank Robery in Escape From NY and the chip scene from T2.
AMEN BRUDDA...Americans (particularly) are such suckers for the party distractions..all the ideological rhetoric of them and us is what keeps the masses preoccupied...well that and controlled media, talk show idiots, and all of the consumer masturbation that dumbs us down.
Minute 9:24... the explanation why this movie was called "Brazil" (back in the 80's Brazil wants to be the host of 1986 or 1990 Football World Cup and 1984 or 1988 Olympic Games... but, to hide the hig levels of poverty and convince the FIFA and COI rulers to be the host, the goverment puts a lot of big banners and screen ads that don't show the "favelas"... This was the inspiration of Terry Gilliam to name this woderfull movie "Brazil" and no "1984 and a half" that originally was called)
Well, i think A Clockwork Orange should be in this list, but anyway, dystopian movies and books are great. I'll try to watch the movies you've listed.
not entirely true - utopia means no place - dystopia means fucked up place - utopia is the false hope given to mankind by all the secret societies which ultimately represent lucifer - a transhumanist world...
What ever happened to Radford's '1984'? That was THE dystopian film from THE dystopian book of the 20th century. I mean 'THX1138 was a rip off...uh...I mean homage derectly to it. Though don't get me wrong, I like THX1138 - I have both films in my DVD collection...
I really think Blade Runner should be #2. It's features some of the most accurate modern day depictions to some amazing engineering feats. Plus it has Harrison Ford.
Close: Brazil is nuber one because, like Taxi Driver, he has a fantasy about an unobtainable girl and like Taxi Driver, he is alone in his seat, so to speak. Then we must include ClockWork Orange. ordering is difficult. very difficult...
Are you kidding? A Scanner Darkly was terrible. It was just sad drug addicts meandering their life away for two hours and as an animator I'm insulted by their bizarre cel shading technique. That movie does not belong if you had to add a contemporary film V for Vendetta was much better, even though it didn't stay true to the graphic novel. And where is A Clockwork Orange? Or Farenheight 451? Or 1984? Cone On!
No, I'm not kidding. I don't think 1984 or Fahrenheit 451 belong on this list and V For Vendetta was too cliche and over-the-top for me to really believe it. As for A Clockwork Orange, it is one of my favorite films, but I have trouble labeling it as a dystopian film.
How could you not consider A Clockwork Orange dystopian. The government taking over your very own personality? 1984 is the pinnacle of dystopia, it is the quintessential idea of dystopia. As for Fareheight I'll grant you the fact that the movie wasn't all that great but the book is a frightening mirror of today's society, how can you not see that as a relevant? Can you also please explain a scanner darkly, is it just because you're a philip k dick fan boy?
A Clockwork Orange does not have quite the level of totalitarian rule that I need to classify something as dystopian. It focuses on the injustices of a few individuals rather than society as a whole. 1984 just didn't make the top five because these movies are all better IMO. I am not a Philip K Dick fanboy. Just watch the movie again rather than having me spoon-feed you its meaning.
Do you not see the hypocrisy in what you just did. You consider A Scanner Darkly to be more dystopian but it was much more centralized on a very small group of people, stoners. While a Clockwork Orange asks the question whether or not the government has the right to change a human beings personality for the protection of others. How could you not see that as more relevant than a bunch of stoners crying about how much their life sucks even though they are responsible for how they shaped it?
Again, watch the movie and try to understand that they are not whiny little stoners; they are victims of a megacorporation that benefits from their dependence on a destructive substance that they then must pay to be rehabilitated from. A Scanner Darkly seems much more global to me than A Clockwork Orange, since such a high percentage of the population consists of drug users. Make a list of your own that includes A Clockwork Orange. It just did not make the final cut for this list. That is all.
But again what you don't realize is no one forced these characters to be addicts in the first place. They made themselves victims which is why in the end a scanner darkly speaks to people who'd rather cry about the corporations than taking action for yourself. You may then say well you can't take action in a dystopian society like this. But history is full of dystopian societies being overthrown. So in the end a scanner darkly is whiny stoners accept it.
Keep in mind that no one forced anyone to murder anybody else in A Clockwork Orange. That was his own free will, even if the actual murder was by accident. His violent and irresponsible behaviors were his own choices.
I like both movies and don't really care to take a side.
The point i'm trying to make is that in a clockwork orange, the character is indeed a murderer and a rapist by his own choice. But the government uses people like him as an excuse to strip away the civil liberties of everyone. so it is not alex who is the victim here, alex is the scape goat. it's the writer's, the thinkers and the revolutionaries who are in danger which is why a clockwork orange is miles and away more significant than a scanner darkly. stoners rarely contribute anything great.
Brazil actually has some of the most amazing set design I've ever seen. Unfortunately, you just watched the ending, so that might hurt the movie for you.
"Brazil" is worth seeing at least once. It's often considered Terry Gilliam's best film. I don't think it was a big-budget film, so that's why it looks a bit off.

Good films. Blade Runner is my favorite in your list. Here are some other great dystopian films in my opinion... Clockwork Orange Eraserhead The Trial 1984 Fahrenheit 451 Dark city Fantastic Planet Lolita The Matrix The Omega Man Children of Men
