In a quiet, reserved way, I think that Serial Experiments Lain is one of the greatest works of fiction ever made. I find it kind of sad that it never really attracted a wide audience. Then again, products designed for mass appeal tend to have all of their quality and originality liposuctioned out, so it is perhaps fortunate that Lain remains the underrapreciated, disturbing, cerebral, beautiful and brilliant gem that it is.

This is my take on the anime:

In the desire to "connect" we can instead seperate/alienate ourselves from others and lose focus of who we are in the quest. The eternal questions surface; what is the purpose of man's existense? Will the answer I find be true? What do I accept as truth?

Lain really isn't that complex; like life...it's what you make of it that amounts to something.
