Most varieties of unpolished rice actually do have beta carotene, it is polished rice that doesn't have any beta carotene. Numerous other crops that can be grown in developing countries that are already available have beta carotene an other nutrients. Also most studies suggest organic farming increases nutrient content in food, has higher yields in poor countries, is more profitable than transgenic crops(like Golden Rice) and therefore reduces poverty(main cause of hunger) in poor countries.
Conventional breeding has created numerous nutrient enhanced crops with high levels of beta carotene(Orange Maize, Orange Sweet Potato, High Beta Carotene Tomato, etc.), these are better solutions than Golden Rice, but you probably never heard of them. You heard of Golden Rice because the Council for Biotechnology Information spent millions of dollars advertising Golden Rice, instead of spending that money to actually help hungry people with vitamin A deficiencies.
Polished rice(what Golden rice was made for) may be linked to increases in diabetes. nih.gov/researchmatters/june2010/06282010diabetes.htm Africans may already be more prone to diabetes. diabetes.diabetesjournals. org/content/52/4/1047.short Native African crops like Cleome gynandra have beta carotene and other nutrients. Why give Africans $100,000,000 polished GM rice and maybe increase diabetes, instead of Cleome gynandra they already have for Vit A?
If the people who own the Bio-tech company's cared about children, they wouldn't be murdering them on a daily basis. And yes I know what I'm talking about. The same people own weapons manufacturing company's, pharmaceutical company's, the banks, etcc. They will destroy this planet if we allow it. Time is running out. If they own all the seeds, we will be dependent on them for food and the food they have to offer is poison.
this is fucking gross they keep certain information from people like how much more water is needed also it dosent produce seeds so must be bought every year and finally it rapes the land the vitams have to come from somewhere
@FancyStacheP That's a shame. Rice IS a fucking seed, and you can fucking seed it. If you'd know agriculture, you'd know that every farm on this planet buys his seeds from an industry because you cannot use the F1 generation seeds because of Mendel laws. In any case you have to buy them each year... Moreover it does not "rape" the ground because caroten is produced indirectly via photosynthesis.
I suggest you and other people to study about biology before making such statements.
how to to interpret that very last statement: "the Rockefeller foundation is going to bribe officials in poor counties to make sure people use it, then they are going to sop making it free when people are dependent on it""
People often complain about genetic engineering as though it were a negative thing. It definitely is not, especially in this context. The main arguments people have against it are 1 it is unnatural and 2 it goes against whaatever religious view they may have. First of all, bacteria such as Agrobacterium tumefaciens have been transforming plants for millions of years. Very natural. And if people disagree for religious reasons, do you not think your god would want millions of children to be saved?
@aotonyharrison I am not particularly against (actually i somewhat support) genetic engineering, but golden rice is an extremely unnecessary and useless expenditure. GR is engineered to express beta-carotene, and aimed mainly at people with rice as the staple food in their diet. What they will neglect to tell you is that beta-carotene is not water soluble, has cost more than 100 million to create, taken 18 years, and is still not available commercially. Gold rice is a hoax, politically motivated
@aidanohanlon It is of no benefit to the poor, nor will save millions of children. A lot of people call this politically motivated due to the amount of money that has been invested - it has been dubbed a "trojan horse" for genetic engineering.
Slowing the protests of GM opposer's by claiming to save lives of millions of children, allows governments to push genetic engineering further with less opposition. Thats just what i think.
@pyromania152 I'd argue with you but clearly you have no idea what your talking about. Id suggest you shutup and don't reply to comments if you have no knowledge on the topic.
She talks of golden rice as though it would only targeted to indians... and then with her own self absorbed ego she starts talking about "if anyone has a kindergarden knowledge..." shes patronising, trying to weave the world to fit her reality... as long as there are people like her, children will keep dying.
Think about this, chemicals are used for pesticides. but, with changing the protiens that are used naturally within the food to make it resistant to insects, its pretty much all natural.
But if you think about it, growing things natural takes a long time and that is why when they go in to the shops they cost a lot. I would have to disagree with waterforpeople. If we wait to go natural food it would take to long to grow and people in the world that needs it now.
Is there a shortage of vitamin a? NO. Have we lost the ability to plant natural food? NO. Stop trying to tie the poor in developing countries to patents that will only make multinationals richer while making them the guinea pigs for an UNTESTED technology that is not proven safe to eat. Grow more natural greens and provide vitamin supplements to the poor. There is no need for this genetically altered rice. It is clearly a profit making scheme.
The reason those in staunch opposition to biotechnology have so much power in holding back the potential of the technology lies in the failing of the biotechnologists being able to effectively educate the general public on its benefits to both society and the environment and dispel the fears generally associated with it.
i think that GMOs are a great way to eliminate world food problems... so long as its controlled

You're fucking stupid. Beta-carotene is a good source of vitamin A, regardless of whether it's soluble in water or not. Ever heard of a carrot?
