I just did this in the NYSSMA Conference All-State mixed choir with Prof. Ling Tam earlier today!!!!!! I love her she's amazing ... and so is this song!!!!!
I did this song in college. It is a very difficult piece, especially with that large of a choir. They did it really well though! I just wished it was a better recording.
sounds like this would've been a killer performance to attend. unfortunately the sound on youtube isn't that great... very hard to hear the singers at times.
Just to clear this up, yes the poem is by Gullen, and yes the pretext of the song is killing a snake, but the poem is actually about the corruption of the cuban government under Batista. "la culebra viene y se enredra en un palo" the snake comes and wraps around a stick. the stick is Cuba, the snake represents America and what ever other corrupt influences. Gullen was a big time marxist.
It was pretty good. The sound quality of the video might be bad, but this really wasnt the best ive heard. My choir sang this song, i would have to say we did much better. Its very hard to hear some of the words being sung. Music isnt just about hitting all of the notes, there is a lot of phrasing involved, and articulation, which is something this song needed so much more of.
"Sensemaya" is the title of a work by Cuban poet Nicolas Guillen. This piece was composed by Mexican Orchestra Director and Composer Silvestre Revueltas. I think it says something about killing a mean mean snake.
There are 2 Sensemaya's. One by Revueltas and one by Robinovitch. One is for orchestra and one is for choir with piano and percussion. They are both really great too! So there!!
There is a third version that belongs to the Chilean group Inti Illimani. Look for it here on youtube as SENSEMAYA "CANTO PARA MATAR A UNA LA CULEBRA". Greetings from Concepción, Chile.
Actually, it is Sid Robinovitch. My choir is doing this song this year, and I have the music right in front of me right now. The thing is, it doesn't say "composed by" or "arranged by", it just says "Music: Sid Robinovitch." So I don't know if you're both right or it's one or the other. Because it's possible that the original was composed by Silvestre Revueltas, but this version here was arranged by Robinovitch.
^^; Sorry, it's probably none of my business, but I thought I'd let you know.
They're two entirely different things. The Robinovitch version, this one, is totally original and seperate than the Revueltas one I believe. They're both adaptations of the same poem though.
any time you're performing a choir with any instruments. The instrumentalists...Should be very aware that their instruments are about 200 times as loud as the vocalists. That tympany can be heard over all those singers...And there's a lovely part thats almost completely blocked out because he's too loud to hear the males. Oh. And the audio is behind the video by a tad bit.
Ahhh!! It's Jing Ling Tam!! I miss working with her...

Does anybody know what "Sensemaya" means?
Thanks (By the way - good work the vocalists.. The timpanies are sometimes a bit too loud, i suppose!)

Yes, it's all about a snake. Sensemaya does not translate into sanke, but it's all about a snake and killing.

It was composed by Sid Robinovitch, a Canadian composer. He's from Manitoba.

Look up Sensemaya in Wikipedia or anywhere else.
DaveDrumstick 3 years ago
Sensemaya was composed by Silvestre Revueltas in 1937. Get your facts straight.
DaveDrumstick 3 years ago
My facts are straight :| I know the composer, and while the original was composed by Revueltas, the version performed is by Robinovitch.

My high school choir did this piece my senior year, and it's a fun one! We just had only the piano accompanying the anthem.
