I am a career firefighter. I was volunteer before I was paid. I have the utmost respect for anyone who chooses to risk their life for others... even more so if they aren't getting paid to do it. I still don't know why so many career guys can't learn to respect the heart of a volunteer. We can help them be safer and can teach them what we know, or learn from their experience. Either way they are invaluable.

I have volunteered to fight wildfires so the authorities wouldn't be called and had sucess. One thing I hate is that gear. I have tried this gear and it's some heavy cumbersome stuff to wear especilly to work while wearing it.
I have wool pants and sweater. They breathe well, are form fitting, are resistant to fire, and stay warm when wet. The official firefighters dudes like wearing this I guess. The old fire cheif in our town never wore the gear either.
