There is no one in the league with this skill set at this size now, nor has there been since Hakeem. Ewing paled in comparison. Shaq could never shoot like Hakeen, not could he play defense like the Dream. He continually worked to improve his game. 80+ percent free throws when he originally shot in the 60s...soo many moved, and deadly from 20 feet. How do you stop a guy like this...ask David Robinson, Shaq, Ewing...you don't
Did that 7'0 man just still the ball from that point guard, run it down the lenth of the court and dunk it. I believe that was the greatest center of all time who did that. The Dream.
Great compilation for the Dream. Houston misses him terribly. If Dwight Howard had the mid-range shot, better free throw shooting, the post moves and determination of Olajuwon, he'd be the closest second-coming of the man himself.
@JoelChavez612 thats a big IF... D Howard has alot to improve on to reach that level... I will say D Howard is a great defensive center.... he dont even come close of the offensive side, shit no other center comes close either...
@kimv020887 Both of them are legendary centers but there really wasnt much competition for them... The Dream played against, David Robinson, Shaq, Ewing, Shawn Kemp and many other good Centers/PF
The best center with the best footwork. Period. Amazing defensive abilities too. The Dream would destroy today's league with that loose defense system they have today.
I wish I'd seen him play. After the Bad Boy Pistons gave way to Jordan, I stopped watching the NBA for like 10 years. Just couldn't take Jordan-mania. Hell, I even missed out on the second half of MJ's career. That's ok - I saw enough from 84-90.
c'mon ppl u dont have to make racist comments about yao, yea he's game-less compared to the greats.that being said, hakeem abused oneal, he would abuse dwight howard or any other center today...ewing ddnt know wat to do wit em, david robinson was had handling skills and was a shot blocker but couldn't deal wit em...but when he was playin, it was the golden age of bball...the only person who kept him from getn his championship, was mj' and the bulls..course he kept alota greats from getn one...

I've been reading comments, and I have something to get off my chest. I have the utmost respect for the early greats like Russell, Chamberlain, Jabbar and others, and I hold these guys in extremely high regard, but lets be realistic. Watch this guys moves, skill and athleticism, really watch it, and honestly tell me if any big could cover this guy. TOO many post moves for anyone, too good a handle and too quick away from the basket. Plus he has a jumper. Nobody could cover this guy.
Here's a shocker. Hakeem is better than Rusell. If I hear one more time about how Rusell's fucking titles make him better than Chamberlain, I will vomitt. If Hakeem was playing on Rusell's Celtics, he would have probably won the same amount of titles.
I'm the biggest Jordan fan in history. With that said, this is the one player who could have broken up the Bulls dynasty. He was UNGUARDABLE in the years Jordan left for baseball. After Mike, he's the 2nd greatest player I've ever seen.
"He was UNGUARDABLE in the years Jordan left for baseball"
I thought he deserved Reg season MVP in the 92-93 season in MJ's final 1st 3peat year. I always get into it with Bulls/MJ fans on youtube who shun the 2 titles we won in that era, I am glad you despite being a Jordan fan tip your hat to the Dream in a tasteful manner. MJ voted him to his all-time team. Both players at both ends with extreme uncommon versatility defensively. MJ with blocks and Dream with steals.
@FuShengAlex He also gets voted to my all time starting team as well. Another poster somewhere else on YouTube summed it up best for me. To paraphrase, he wrote something like "You can't name one big who could guard him, you can't name one big he couldn't guard." He had too many strengths as a big, and no weaknesses. A center with that athleticism, that skill, its not fair.
vsmith3rd....well I will admit Jabbar (who maybe the only "C" I'd take over Dream) well into his late 30s in his 1st 2 years really lit Hakeem up head to head. He was about 3 inches taller than Hakeem with long arms and savvy. He was the 1 player that gave "young" Dream problems. But I think Hakeem with more experience got better defensively (especially positioning) and would've given a better challenge, given that he never played H.S ball and only 2 real full years of College.
The proof: He beat all the other great centers of his time one way or another during the 94-95 seasons had monster series against Ewing, ridiculed MVP Robinson, schooled Shaq in his first NBA Finals and is the best defensive center of all time (I don't see Mutombo playing till he's 60 to reach the 3.8k mark ) =p I can only wonder what would've happend if it wasn't for that Stockton 3 pointer in the 96 ? would he be the one stop the reign of the bulls of the 90's? :P
@KungFuTze Not just the 90's best center period... I believe he would destroy any center dead or alive in their prime... He had a true all around game... Like you said he school hall a fame Centers (Robinson, Shaq, & Ewing)
Of course there are many great centres and they all deserve their credit e.g Jabbar,Russell, Shaq, malone but seriosuly how many centres can be so dominant and graceful as the Dream. He is incredible. Especially when he dominated Robinson. Insane
This is the best Olajuwon mix on Youtube. In fact, this is one of the best mixes period on Youtube. Instead of random generic rap in the background you actually synced up the music to the action. Bravo sir, 5 stars.
I respect what everyone is saying but at the end of the day if we are talking about pure skill from the center position Hakeem was the greatest center who ever played period!!Bill Russell no doubt is the greatest winner from the center spot but Hakeem would have ate him for lunch all 7 days of the week his footwork is some of the most amazing I have ever seen and I have been around basketball over 30 years.Did anyone really see what Hakeem did to a young Shaq?He roasted him something crazy!!
he is the epitome of grace, nimbleness and finesse in a postion that is defined by sheer power and muscle.
he outplayed centers like shaq, ewing, parish, robinson and kareem, some of the best centers ever. he stands out in an era where big trees dominates the NBA forest.
the outcome? he exits with 2 rings with virtually no reliable sidekick. shaq had kobe. kareem had magic. parish had bird. wilt had west. russel had cousy. hakeem? he had kenny smith. lol.
That's a great point you make. The Rockets were a team of role players with the superstar in the middle who carried them to two titles. They were only good because he put them in the position to be good. As a die rockets fan, I'd love to see another center like him come to us in the draft.
That's a good call, I think ye definitely has the potential to be. A lot of people forget too, that in the Syracuse game as well as the big dance Thabeet hit some mid-range jump shots. I'd love to see him do it, and of course would love to see him on the Rockets. Since, Yao's career is potentially over.
but Clyde was not an all star in the '95 championship season, his numbers were going down in Portland, that's why Houston was able to get him..no doubt Clyde was a stud in helping win that 2nd title, but don't think for a second the '95 Clyde was prime Drexler..Dream is the only player in history to lead a team to 2 titles with no all star teamates-he stomped ass on both sides of the floor, unstoppable offense, bone crushing defense, caused havoc all over the floor, that's why Olajuwon is the greatest!
I'm sorry but i have to disagree. While i would take Hakeem over Shaquille, Chamberlain, and Jabbar, Bill Russel is the greatest center of all time. How absurd is it that Wilt only had 2 championships. Know why? Because over and over bill Russell stood in his way winning 11 rings. In my opinion, the second greatest center of all time.
the rings dont matter...its about the skill, and talent. Hakeem had the best moves. He would have won more rings but he didnt really have a great sidekick like kobe, or hardaway, or dwayne wade. he had kenny smith lol
Dude, rings aren't a thing if you a almost as equally great wingman. Hakeem beat the best center of all time out played the greatest centers of all time. All Bill Russel did was meet grumpy Wilt Chamberlain at the playoffs over and over again Wilt was just a hot head and Russell took advantage of that. Just because he won alotta rings doesn't mean a thing if all you have to do is beat a grumpy man. Russell was great yea but, Hakeem was better.
these days they draft big men just because they're big. they aren't expected to have any skills. big men with skills are officially extinct in the NBA.
Best technical, athletic pivot man to ever play the post. Also just as passionate on defense as he was on offense with such stellar numbers. Was defined with usage of all around abilities than exploiting one point of advantage. Truly a legend!
I don't see Yao as living up to the dream. Look at this due he's all over the place. What the hell does Yao do? He's tall with no real skills.Yoyu can't make a highlight yao reel
He's just a 7'6 (or however tall he is) guy who gets injured alot and can't even dunk that well who just throws the ball over obviously shorter defenders... He has no foot work at all. I feel sorry for T-mac he used to be able to be compared to even Kobe!! But, now since theres really no other option to go to on offense cept giving the ball to Yao who by the way gets injured ALL the time! T-mac career is over with the Rockets he needs to find a new team...
opponets throw smaller, quicker and outside-savvy big men at him, and see yao murdered by pick&roll and outside shooting. look at `08 utah-rocket series. boozer murdered him with pick&roll, and okur with outside shooting.and being tall, have good footwork and such won`t matter if he keeps getting injured.
@iTheCommonCold welll i beg to differ..yao definitely has some skills..hes the only center in nba history those 80+% from the charity stripe..not even the Dream had those #s...check it out..oh and btw, yao is a 100% 3pt shooter for his carrer lol
Honestly if KB fans didnt overrate KB so much this wouldnt be such an issue. Bruce gives KB his props but he and a lot of Jordan fans like me cant stand how the young fans with very little if any knowleadge of that era underrate Jordan and say KB is better. He isnt. That's why he goes on and states that KB isnt better than Jordan and shows facts.
I mean do you think KB is better than Michael? If so I'd like to know your point of view.
What's up Mike I've sent you a friend invite since it's the only way to even PM you. In the meantime I'll answer here.
First of all I dont know if Im the right person to talk about it. But check the channel and the description. Bruce doesnt bash KB there. He states he is an incredible player as all people should.
I see you were expecting an angry comeback from me and it turns out i tried to be polite. I guess it's a turnoff for you since you didnt care to reply.
I'll just ask you one last thing, if you dont have anything constructive to say then please stay off my channel.
Mike #1 when he had a hall of fame player on his team.Jordan played 5 years w/out Pippen and led his team to a losing record all 5 of those years.HERE IS WISDOM MJ FANS-you really don't know jack shit when you claim Dream wins no titles had Jordan not retired.jordan himself admitted that he wasn't confident of beating Hakeem-so wake up -Mike's titles are Mike's/and Dream's titles are Dream's/Dream won the title w/out 1 all star teamate-Mike lost every year w/out Pip-so shut the fuck up bitches
Yo this mix was sick. I like how it wasn't just a bunch of slow motion clips like most of the people do in their highlight mixes. Hakeem = Unstoppable
just a word to the wise, i make about 12 points a night and im a junior just from doing that one move lol. The shake, big dumb centers will always go for it and then its the easiest shot in the game lol.
Best center of the 90's? Get real guys.

Thanks

What's up Mike I've sent you a friend invite since it's the only way to even PM you. In the meantime I'll answer here.
First of all I dont know if Im the right person to talk about it. But check the channel and the description. Bruce doesnt bash KB there. He states he is an incredible player as all people should.

I see you were expecting an angry comeback from me and it turns out i tried to be polite. I guess it's a turnoff for you since you didnt care to reply.
I'll just ask you one last thing, if you dont have anything constructive to say then please stay off my channel.
Thanks.

I tried to send this to your inbox but you got a friend lock.
Here's the message i tried to send:
Im really not up to back and forth insults with you. Wont get us anywhere.
I'd just like to know where this grudge against Jordan comes from. As you said Jordan has retired long ago, so why dedicate so much time hating him?
Just wanted to know.

(i do score more than 12 points lol)

I luv the block on Karl Malone when Malone was tryin' to show off by puttin' his off-hand behind him as if he is some kinda' special dunker.
sambone79 3 years ago 3
That's Malone's signature pose for dunks. Amazing block from behind.
Of course, the spin moves and fakes are just amazing. So fast and graceful.
