This is a great video! Thanks for making it. So often all people hear are the protests of the vocal and ignorant manority that want to ban carriage horses. This video makes its point well. Carriage horses are LOVED and CARED FOR they are NOT abused-- any carriage horse owner or driver knows this,
i thought the horses in there house peering out the window looked sad,the building could do with some brighteneing up,my suggestion would be to advertise on the horses carriage when they go out to WORK,is to ask for volunteer's to brighten up where the animal's live,and to even come and offer carrot's and other treat's,and to keep them company,now wouldn't that be great,that way,everyone win's,but most of all the horses,if i came to NY,i would definately be into it,put it on tourist map
@sabnazzy Remember that the drivers really love the horses and they give them carrots all day long. When the horses are off from work I am sure they actually have seen enough of people for one day. Two many people running in the stables would not work. If a person would get hurt they could get the stable owners in trouble as well.When I used to drive back in the day my horse was my best friend. He neighed everytime he saw me.

Horses love to work! My horses are happier, well rounded animals because they get to exercise and see the world! I think it's cruel to keep a horse locked up in a box stall! It's good to see horses at work! People who complain truly do not know a thing about horses. I'd love to see more water stations in town- but that's only based on my views of other video's on the internet. I myself have a small horse that pulls cart and he knows when it's time to work. He sets a pace and just goes and goes!

Horses have no place in the busy downtown traffic of NYC! Just the practice of this is cruel! Everytime you take your horses out in that, you are risking their lives, but all you care about is the almighty dollar, so what if you are taking grave risks of an accident, what about the long term health risks to these animals breathing in the exhaust fumes from other vehicles on the streets, I guess these things just don't matter to you. thats what i deal with everyday people buy horses to ride and then get bored and only come around once a week to take them out for an hour or so and then stop coming period when it gets too cold so the majority of the horses at my place sit in a stall or out in a field all day i dont even remember what the owner of a stallion looks like because they dont know how to handle it so they quit trying to ride it and refuse to sell it

Observant! I lived in NYC in the 80's and that is when I worked as a carriage driver. All the pictures are from back then. My horse Rufus lived out his life in New Jersey and then Iowa. Some of the horses in this clip are still alive and kicking but some of them are gone. They lived long healthy lives and most of them lived out their lives on farms to very old ages. That is the truth no matter what some people say and I really don't care as long as I know that I am right
Most of my friends are still driving and I can't agree with you. When I was driving back in the 80's it was changing for the better for the horses. Older owners were selling off to private people that were way more horse friendly. Almost all the things I did not agree with as an animal rights activist changed during that period and I have visited since and I see no abuse. I think a horse at work in a City is not animal abuse so it is hard for me to talk abuse when I see a healthy horse at work.

Thank you . I always think the opposite is more abuse. The privately owned horse that gets to stand in a box stall 24hours a day like a parked vehicle. Then taken out for a short spin and put back again until the next time the person feels like riding. How those animals cope I don't know. And I never hear anyone say those horses are abused but they are.
The proof is in the pudding, as they say. I can easily catch all of our carriage horses when they're loose in the yard--most of them will even come when you call them, no food or treats necessary. Every "riding horse" I've ever met has been virtually impossible to catch without serious bribery. That speaks volumes.

Yes, you have a point about the chicken breast. You shouldn't feed animals table scraps or human food as a replacement for proper food designed for the animal. But while dog's can get away with food made mostly from grains and starches cats cannot. They physically need more protein in their diet. I don't focus on carriage drivers at all. My main concern is the circus, where there is NO other method but to beat the exotic animals to train them, and they live a life of solitary and imprisonment.

most of the time carriage horses are not tied at all, but stand quietly on the hack line, and move up on their own as as the hack line moves up. This is because they are trained, not because they are restrained.
Have you ever heard of ground tying. Many horses are trained to do it. The horses are trained to stand in the same spot. Saddle horses do it. Haven't you seen any westerners lately?

the most recent, I was in NJ, it was more than 85 degrees, out, I watch a horse urinate on itself and forced to stand in it, the flies were horrific eating at them and they were chains so they couldn't move. One horse was at a red light behind a truck blowing fumes in its face. Someone else honked a horn and the horse got really upset. Personally, that sickens me.
I have seen horses on a ranch and these horses looked MISERABLE in comparison.

Two many people running in the stables would not work. If a person would get hurt they could get the stable owners in trouble as well.When I used to drive back in the day my horse was my best friend. Horses love to work! My horses are happier, well rounded animals because they get to exercise and see the world! I think it's cruel to keep a horse locked up in a box stall! It's good to see horses at work! People who complain truly do not know a thing about horses. I'd love to see more water stations in town- but that's only based on my views of other video's on the internet. I myself have a small horse that pulls cart and he knows when it's time to work. He sets a pace and just goes and goes!

Horses have no place in the busy downtown traffic of NYC! Just the practice of this is cruel! Every time you let a horse out of the barn you're risking it's life. Every time you ride a horse you're risking it's life. In twenty five years there have been three fatal accidents. How many horses die a DAY from natural pasture accidents?
The horses are breathing the same air as people and their pets. Except horses have their heads at least five feet off the ground, whereas children and dogs are literally on the same level as the exhaust pipes. Should we ban kids and dogs too?

thats what i deal with everyday people buy horses to ride and then get bored and only come around once a week to take them out for an hour or so and then stop coming period when it gets too cold so the majority of the horses at my place sit in a stall or out in a field all day i dont even remember what the owner of a stallion looks like because they dont know how to handle it so they quit trying to ride it and refuse to sell it

Observant! I lived in NYC in the 80's and that is when I worked as a carriage driver. All the pictures are from back then. My horse Rufus lived out his life in New Jersey and then Iowa. Some of the horses in this clip are still alive and kicking but some of them are gone. They lived long healthy lives and most of them lived out their lives on farms to very old ages. That is the truth no matter what some people say and I really don't care as long as I know that I am right

Most of my friends are still driving and I can't agree with you. When I was driving back in the 80's it was changing for the better for the horses. Older owners were selling off to private people that were way more horse friendly. Almost all the things I did not agree with as an animal rights activist changed during that period and I have visited since and I see no abuse. I think a horse at work in a City is not animal abuse so it is hard for me to talk abuse when I see a healthy horse at work.

Thank you . I always think the opposite is more abuse. The privately owned horse that gets to stand in a box stall 24hours a day like a parked vehicle. Then taken out for a short spin and put back again until the next time the person feels like riding. How those animals cope I don't know. And I never hear anyone say those horses are abused but they are.

The proof is in the pudding, as they say. I can easily catch all of our carriage horses when they're loose in the yard--most of them will even come when you call them, no food or treats necessary. Every "riding horse" I've ever met has been virtually impossible to catch without serious bribery. That speaks volumes.

I have never understood why it is the animal rights activists who are so quick to see carriage horses as machines or "automatons." Carriage drivers know that each horse is an individual, with his or her own personality and needs. ARAs want to treat ALL horses as ENTIRELY the same. Y'all are the ones using horses as undifferentiated machines.
ARAs talk about how ALL carriage horses do X, Y, or Z. They almost never talk about horses as individuals.

However if you ever care to enlighten yourself then go to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and go and look at the number of animals put down by PETA compared to other shelters in the same area. Yes, you have a point about the chicken breast. You shouldn't feed animals table scraps or human food as a replacement for proper food designed for the animal. But while dog's can get away with food made mostly from grains and starches cats cannot. They physically need more protein in their diet. Cat's cannot decide like a human whether or not they want to be vegan or vegetarian. Also, why are you focusing on carriage drivers when the plight of animals designed for consumption is much worse?

satouame - if you read the cat food cans, they tell you if you feed the cat the product only, it can create malnutrition.
I don't focus on carriage drivers at all. My main concern is the circus, where there is NO other method but to beat the exotic animals to train them, and they live a life of solitary and imprisonment.
I personally think it's disgusting when drivers place horses in a position to be hit or killed by a car, especially drivers in NYC

Cats require micronutrients abundant in meat but not readily available from other sources. Cats that don't get enough of the amino acid taurine (only good source: meat) will suffer retinal degeneration and eventual blindness. Other nutrients they obtain primarily or solely from meat include arachidonic acid, vitamin A, vitamin B12, niacin, and thiamine. Cats also require more protein and less fiber than a typical vegetarian diet provides.

I've noticed absolutely none of the people who are behind this ban are, or have been, part of the carriage horse industry, or other horse industries. I'm willing to bet most of them haven't even ridden a horse except maybe once while on vacation on a trail ride. What BS.

True and they usually don't bother to find out how animals think and feel. That can be very dangerous for the animal. I know of a PETA spokes person that tried to make his indoor cat a vegetarian. Cats have to eat animal protein and have no enzymes to convert other protein in to what they need to live. THAT is animal abuse!

Well, that is not animal abuse at all. It actually is helping to not promote animal abuse. There are companies that make cat and dog food that these animals eat and are fine.
Personally, I would be more concerned with the abuse people are supporting by buying meat at a store. If you ever see the living conditions of most pigs, cows and chickens it is really heartbreaking.

are a blessing to us like a help mate. Like us theyre created to work and enjoy their relationship with people. Some want to deny the privilege by removing them from our lives. How ridiculeous. Just like people. They are coworkers. One may go mad cow on us.Maybe a brain tumor.Yes and horses thirst just like people. Who denys them water or food? Shame on that one. I'm sure horses are just fine working on a farm and then getting to run around free.

see, when you say that it confuses me where you get those facts, there was a show on the ASPCA where they were going around investigating drivers. They were showing how some of them were falsifying the horses time ticket to over work them.

If horses were on a carriage, in a park that cars were not around to harm it, in decent weather with a lot of breaks, love and a nice place to sleep at night, with a vacation half of the year. I would NOT complain. But that is NOT the case.
You don't love horses otherwise you wouldn't deny and help cover up the ones that OVER ride the horses and have them in extreme HOT/COLD weather, with horrible small places to sleep.

most of the time carriage horses are not tied at all, but stand quietly on the hack line, and move up on their own as as the hack line moves up. This is because they are trained, not because they are restrained.

it's really concerning how it sounds normal to you that a horse would have to urinate on itself like its no big deal. Horses in stable do not get treated like that, unless they are neglected.
Also, I would love to know what horse you take care of that Lay in anything, horses sleep standing up, so I'm not too sure how much you really know about them now.
Horses in fields have flies, of course. But these horses I saw were SWARMED with flies and couldn't move. It was very sad.

the most recent, I was in NJ, it was more than 85 degrees, out, I watch a horse urinate on itself and forced to stand in it, the flies were horrific eating at them and they were chains so they couldn't move. One horse was at a red light behind a truck blowing fumes in its face. Someone else honked a horn and the horse got really upset. Personally, that sickens me.
I have seen horses on a ranch and these horses looked MISERABLE in comparison.
