Man, you're lucky that you had the video camera running at least! I had the scroll pop off of my bass last summer in the middle of a solo. It was the ONLY concert that tour that I didn't set up the camera- d'oh!
I haven't had anything quite like this happen (touch wood) but I did have the bridge collapse in the middle of a rehearsal once. Made a hell of a bang and made a few people jump.
It's an American Standard from the 40s/50s. I got it from Mark Fain, by way of Kip Martin. It's been on a number of albums, including several Ricky Skaggs records. It's very similar to Dennis Crouch's American Standard, which you can hear on tons of records including the wonderful Allison Krauss/Robert Plant record."
Bass players everywhere are blown away and send their sympathies. Gotta love Jon... that was some solo! Good luck getting it fixed before your next gig... if you are not still with the Wood Bros. This band has something very special happening around it...
Seen the same thing happen while in a case while performing a sub freezing outdoor performance. Heart breaking.

brother, I feel your pain. I had the back of my doghouse pop off like the lid on a canister of Pringles. I was too stunned to breathe.

Love how everyone including Abigail finds it hilarious except for the poor bassist.

If it wasn't a Kay, I'd guess it's an Engelhardt. They're known as the "exploding basses."

From Jon Estes himself.
"Definitely not a junky bass, although a plywood.
