It's an old SMW glitch. You fly with with item, kick it into something so it comes back to you just as the cape opens. You grab it and the machine still thinks your cape is open and there you have it.

Man... don't give him too much credit. Not that I am saying that he's bad, he uses save states and slowdown, so to get thru the most horrible parts, he can just save there and if he dies, he gets in the same point, same lives, back. So, yes, he's good, but he isn't a god, I'm sure that it took him 1 or 2 months to beat it.

Maxxim is using Tools, such as savestates and Slowdowns, which makes it easier too pinpoint the location of where he is going to land, and how the items will be picked up. In case he would fail, he would just reload a savestate, and that isn't shown, since he's using the built-in recorder. If you don't believe me, check the Video Information.
