@wajidmajid That is your interpritation, other Muslims have other ideas what these words written in Arabic meant to mean. Scholars fight over them, majority start to believe in one version of the meaning but some still understand it another way etc. This will never end. You say this right now but 5 minutes some other Muslim will tell me the complete opposite as these are words in the Quran but it's left to us interprit the meaning and message of a verse.

I have been married for 15 years now. I have just recently converted to Islam. My husband is very supportive of this decision.  However he is not ready to convert himself. I have much to learn and study at this point and don't want to give this beautiful religion up. Is there a time period I can wait or is this flat out not ok?

@queenjewels5 Congratulations on your conversion! We are so glad you could join us in this wonderful religion. It's different with you and your husband because you were married under a different religion, and I'm sure your husband will come to it whenever he's ready; there has to be no pressure. Just educate him and guide him the best you can and he will get there. There is no reason for you to give up your religion...He will convert when he's ready Inshallah, however long that takes. :)

Can a Muslim marry a non-Muslim? Depends on who you ask. I am an atheist and I am married to a Bosnian Muslim from Serajiv in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The local Marabout who happens to be her father approved of our marriage and the entire family had praised it. And yes they did knew I was not a Muslim before the marriage. By the way, Katty or Katarina Tusača Mileseva doesn't wear a Hijab or a Burka and never wishes to do so. And she is a Sunni and member of the Hanafi School.

As of right now, Katty herself is now a certified Ulama and is one of the very first women Ulamas in the United States. She is the head of a local Mosque in Virginia and has sent contributions to building the Muslim Community Center in New York. She still doesn't wear a Hijab. The only time she has worn a Hijab was during her mother's funeral, it was an Islamic Funeral followed by iddah or period of mourning. This was before we had met.

* She doesn't shame women for wearing revealing clothing, but she doesn't find it appropriate. And she will find it shameful given the circumstances.

* She does not believe Muhammad ascended to Paradise in Jerusalem and will not believe in anything not written in the Quran.

I remember one time when a Wahhabi had moved into town and was condemning Katty for teaching Islam at a Mosque, because she was a woman and even more so for not wearing a Hijab or Burqa. She beat the shit out of him. She is over six feet tall and very strong and athletic. And she knows a lot of different martial arts including Brazilian Style Ju-jitsu. So she took him down and near cracked his arm until he begged for her to stop. Because she is a Muslim, she had to stop and he ran like the wind.

There was also times she was attacked by people when we had vocation or travelled outside the United States in Pakistan and in Israel.

One time she was having an argument with an IDF personnel about the mistreatment of Palestinians and when the IDF attacked her. She grabbed him and did a Brazilian Ju-jitsu move and he then began to beg for her to stop. She stopped because she is Muslim and he ran off and she proclaimed "Allahu Akbar!"

My catholic sister is married to an atheist and it was in a church so this information by Mr Yusuf Estes must be erroneous I'm afraid.

Furthermore I don't understand why in the muslim faith it is stressed that the man should be muslim and the children have an islamic upbringing. This way it seems to me that Islam wants to dominate the whole marriage, even if the woman might be chistian or jewish.

You are playing with words. Quran represents Peace to all people this is Islam. In that verse, you must understand what unbelievers are we talking about? The Quran says to have tolerance to all. no matter their belief. So the Unbeliever is not everybody who does not believe in Islam. the Unbeliever talked about here is the Enemies, the ones who attack Islam and the name of Allah. Muslims do not suppose to take slaves unless they take them as prisoners of war. But if you look at history and still today Muslims are taking slaves. Islam does not permit this but this happens. Most people find it awkward that Katty is a Muslim, because she is blond blue-eyed woman who is quite tall and doesn't wear a Hijab or any identification of being a Muslim, but she doesn't believe such is necessary. Oh and I'll tell you how we first met. Back when those German/Danish Cartoons of Muhammad were depicted. There were angry muslim rallies where angry Muslims were throwing stones at the Danish Embassy in Sarajevo and Katty along with her father and several relatives including one who was a Mufti was throwing stones at those Muslims calling them Kafirs for throwing stones at innocent Christians (since the actual cartoonists were not the Embassy it self) and forcing your beliefs is sacrilegious.

Katty actually isn't a big girl. She is tall, but smaller than me. I'm about an inch taller than her. And she isn't muscular or fat either. Slightly chubby, but not really noticeable.
