  • The P51 mustang was only any good when it was fitted with the merlin engine. The spitfire did have the edge3 over the hurricane but both were fine aircraft.

  • @sausagedog63 the Hawker Hurricane was the winner of ww2 and it was the best as it was easier to manufacture & can take more damage than a spitfire.... bot there was not a lot in it wen it was in the air :)

  • The P51 mustang was only any good when it was fitted with the merlin engine.

  • Can somebody tell me which is a better aircraft? I know the Hurricane is under-rated compared with the Spitfire. I would love to fly either!

  • @theindiekidable As far as I know, the Hurri was easier to fly, was a better gun platform, was slightly more manouverable in the turn, and was more rugged. But the Spit was faster, more modern, and had a much larger potensial for developement.

  • What about the almost forgotton Typhoon aircraft. Another "hot" ship!

  • To 105porterhouse: Thanks for the explanation. Engine speed is of course controllable. I wonder if these aircraft had rev. limiters. Doubtful!

  • What instrument is the Huricaine pilot constantly lookin at? He can't keep his eyes off of it. It is on the R.H. side of the panal. The ground guy is eyeballing it also. It is after all, a mechanical contrivance. Hey, what could possibly go wrong???!!!

  • @leesherman100 - the only instrument of great interest there is the tach - I'm not sure if they had a tendency to over-rev on take off...

  • Awesome video and the music is just fitting to the aircraft. Thanks for posting it. The saviours of Britiain.

  • The P51 was eventually powered by a Rolls Royce merlin engine

  • @MrGoldsable wasnt the P51 powered by the rolls royce griffon?

  • @MrGoldsable wasnt the P51 powered by the rolls royce griffon? And super charged.

  • @JNL19901 no Merlin, built under licence by Packard

  • The P-51 came in late and thinks it won the war all on it's own. the hurricane and spitfire were there when they were needed most.

  • The p-51 looks like a tractor compared to this! A known pilot said that the spitfire was the wwii fighter wich was best to fly!

  • Thank you! We will keep our Mustangs!! Signed a proud Yank!!

  • Wonderful video with fitting music from Ron Goodwin and Rools Royce Merlins. The shots of the Hurricane are the most beautiful I've ever seen, and the Spitfire...I don't think anyone could make those machines look better. Has anyone made a video of a Spitfire and it doesn't look wonderful though? perhaps, but I doubt any other aircraft can stir such emotion.

  • Lovely - shame about the music! What's wrong with the sound of Merlin engines???

  • Very beautiful. Thanks

  • IMO, it’s apple and oranges. The Spit and the Hurri were point defense weapons. Great for defending an asset within their relatively short range. The Mustang was a long range offensive weapon, that took the fight into the enemy’s heartland. The Spit and hurri denied the enemy victory, the Mustang handed him defeat. All were superb, but different, weapons. As for which aircraft was symbolic of the conflict, that's is a matter of opinion. I've allways thought the Stuka filled that roll. IMO

  • Will we ever be able to look back upon today's weapons of war and see their beauty?

  • >the Spitfire and the Hurricane are the most symbolic aircraft of WWII

    Sure :-)

greetz from Poland ;-) -- CFS fan

  • Every time I either see a spit on the TV or fly past you can't help stop what your doing and pay homage to it and give thanks for saving our Nation.

  • This is just my opinion, but I think the Spitfire is the most beautiful aircraft ever designed. It will always be a symbol of hope, freedom and spirit. The Spit and the Hurricane stopped what was supposed to be unstoppable, that being the Luftwaffe! Then again, that's just my opinion!!! Absolutely awesome video!!!

  • Those Merlin engines The sound is awesome !

  • I don't care what anyone else says, the Spitfire and the Hurricane are the most symbolic aircraft of WWII; The Yanks can keep their P-51 for all I care.

  • @mrrmancunian I think you mean OUR P-51. Who made the mediocre Mustang with the US Allison engine into the superb machine it became? The British did! ROLLS ROYCE engineers fitted the Merlin engine to the Mustang & made it great. In addition, the British coined the name Mustang, so the Yanks can thank us!

  • @mrrmancunian i agree i am from london by birth and had a wonderful experience whe a lanc,a spitfire, anda hurrican flew over where i lived, never forgot it a wondrful experience

  • @mrrmancunian

They certinly earned there place in history as a mirical long before the P-51 rust bucket lol.

I was planting trees as a job once and had the pleasure of our Super Marine spit fly over me, I just stood there amaized and honored, Seen the Battle of Britain planes allot over the years and always hold them with great pride. LOL

  • The Merlin sound is unique.A symphony.

  • I love the defiant growl of the Spitfire's Merlin engine at the end of this video. What an ingenious design! A fighter with an elliptical wing coupled with an engine that was so advanced that it equiped some Mustangs.

  • my dream = to fly a spitfire one day one day

  • A merlin powered aircraft flying overhead, unmistakable. If you've heard it you know what I mean . Oh yeahh.

  • oh man ive always wanted to fly one of these too bad thats never going to happen.

  • Sure it can, in a Flight sim like FSX or X-Plane :). If/when you crash it no-one gets hurt! Well maybe your pride.

    Beautiful video too.

  • spitfire = beautiful

  • Without this Great Bird The world will be enslaved by Nazi's, Spitfire is truly the bird of freedom!

  • Another fine video, funtime. It sent a patriotic surge through my blood and made the hairs on my arms stand up. The last obstacle in western europe against the Nazi menace: a small, rainy island with an ill-prepared military machine, and yet we carried the hopes of the free world on our backs, and gave Hitler the first of many bloody noses.
