(1) This drill/training gets done with the assumption that riot police is outnumbered by the rioters or violent demonstrators, which used to be the case quite often in the past.

(2) Blocking and breaking up the rioters is the first priority of the riot police. Arresting comes the next step once the large group of rioters gets broken into pieces.

(3) In a way, you are looking at a Roman legion in a battle field in the 21st century.

The easiest way to handle or crush this kind of riots (where rioters are armed with baseball bats, steel pipes and etc) is just shoot them all. But they don't do that in S. Korea because the rioters are not armed with guns.

However, most of them are in the military service, Navy, Marines, Army, and Air force. You can choose which one you're entering at...

99% S.Korean youngest men should get military drill for 2 years if you're NOT an insane person or a physically handicapped person.

well... it's like choosing between to severe diseases. if you choose military, there's a pretty good chance that you get bored to death at DMZ, if you're unfortunate you might really get killed there by some overpassionate NK snipers or "Ghosts", if you choose police, you mostly have to serve in Riot squads.. this is like the most shittiest thing to do. @EdTheBadass Most riot police are not civilian in the Middle East and most don't have military urban training like these people despite being in the military, most are trained to fight on the battlefield. Also South Korean riots squads don't mess around. They will club you and use the edges of shields as weapons.
